The Story

Modern and restrained in form, expressive and rustic in glaze. The artisan's hand is authentically reproduced in this stoneware pattern designed exclusively for Crate and Barrel by ceramic artist and designer Kathy Erteman at her 18th Street studio in New York City. A contemporary matte black exterior contrasts the rustic beauty of a shiny, speckled white glazed interior ringed with the subtly raised spiral associated with hand-thrown pieces. A raised clay rim features a sandy glaze that evokes the feel of exposed terra cotta. To capture the artisan look of this dinnerware, Erteman modeled prototypes to true scale by hand with her original glazes as reference for production. In the words of the designer, "When making tableware, I consider design and the rigors of daily use. The spirit of my hand in these pieces is modest, to harmonize with and act as a support to the prepared ingredients."

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beautiful but doesn't do well in the microwave Beautiful set. I was skeptical about the shape of the bowls but they are fine with liquids. They arrived with 2 broken items but c&b replaced them quickly. Since then I have had 1 dish chip when I accidentally hit it on the counter, that's the only chip since I've has the dishes for a year. The only issue is that when you put then in the microwave the dishes become very hot but the food isn't...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Collection, Great Value After searching for dinnerware that looked handcrafted, yet refined, this collection was a winner. Online photos do not do justice for how beautiful they are in person. They may be slightly more fragile than anticpated, but agreat value in comparison to similar styles from other high-end competitors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Looks I bought these dishes a couple months ago and they've held up well. I hand wash my dishes because of other reviews about chipping. They look great and they're a good size. Be careful when stacking bowls in cabinet because they could easily scratch or chip.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from really sleek and modern, but also quite large We registered for these for our wedding and are pretty happy with them. They're easy to clean, look really classy, and its nice to have a matching set. The only issue I can find is that the bowls are really wide so they're not ideal for some kinds of soups or cereal or anything. They are, however, great as serving bowls for our nightly dinners. One of the plates came slightly chipped and I called C&B Customer service and they sent a brand new one, no questions asked, within a week. Incredible customer service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Set! Bought this set 2 months ago and love it! Has been washed multiple times in the dishwasher with no scratching or fading of the black underside of the dishes. Am able to stack 4 bowls with some care. Love the look of the dishes and the shape of the mugs! Totally satisfied with this purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice dinnerware We registered for this dinnerware set of 4 place settings for our shower (2 years ago) and have used it daily since then. Dinnerware has held up well in the dishwasher and in the microwave. In May 2014, we ordered another set of 4 place settings, to complete our set. Looks like they may have added additional glaze to the outside of the dishes, so it does look a tad glossier than the first set, but we still love the set

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beautiful Dinnerware But Chips! I just purchased 12 place settings of this beautiful stoneware. I was unboxing it all and putting it into my cabinet, knocked one dinner plate on the side of another, and the rimmed chipped! So disappointed, the stoneware will not be durable, I'm returning it all.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Strangely delicate I received a set of four place settings for my birthday in January. I love the look of them. I love the texture and the color. It makes a stunning place setting. The only problem is that the dinner plates keep getting chipped in the dishwasher. The first time I assumed it was just bad luck and ordered a few more dinner plates, thinking I'd replace the chipped one and have two extra so we could serve six. Today two more plates came out chipped. Now I know what you're thinking... it's not the plate, it's the dishwasher. But I have had this dishwasher for four years and in that time, only one other bowl chipped. I think the problem lies in the design of the plate which has a slightly up-turned lip that seems to catch on things.Apart from the chipping problem, I love this set, I really do - and that's why I feel really, really sad. I haven't experienced any of the problems with scratches others have described and the pieces without the lip seem fine.On balance I would recommend this set with reservations. It might be best to hand wash the dinner plates. I may have to do this because replacing the plates every time is getting expensive. The set seems to robust otherwise it would have never occurred to me that I'd need to give them any special care, but there you are.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gets compliments from my guests! I purchased this set last year ... I liked the style (my mom had heathware, and I always liked those) ... and in part due to the reviews I saw posted.Pros:- the look is simple, but yet there's some complexity to the style with the rings/ridge on the plates.- I love the mugs, not too heavyCons:- Not a lot of serveware; There are 3 total (small bowl, large bowl and large platter).- they are big, and as a result, heavy- During shipment; pieces were broken;- Quality of finish is not consistent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buddha Bowl Maybe I'm just projecting the idea that it's a Buddha bowl onto this bowl. Maybe it really is a Buddha bowl. Either way, I really enjoy eating out of this bowl. You know how sometimes in life you happen on something and you just know: this is it. For me, this is it. The size, the feel, the heft. The simplicity.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for everyday dinnerware This dinnerware set has been great for my family. The plates have wide bases so they do not tip over when trying to cut meats of sorts. The only thing that I think many may have a problem with is the lack of uniformity. Each individual piece seems to have its own uniqueness, good and bad flaws. Some of the pieces aren't fully painted, some of the plates have curves in them. For the amount of money I spent I would expect a little more, everything finished perfectly. However, I try to see each piece as its own, with its unique flaws. lol. As for other reviews saying the plates, bowls get scratches, I have a toddler who oftens uses these items and not once have I seen any scratches. I dish wash and hand wash these and so far so good. The bowl shape's uniqueness can cause some people some issues with loading in the dishwasher, but I am lucky enough to have a really old dishwasher that allows the bowls to lay down at an angle just fine! Overall, I am happy with my purchase and am still looking forward to using them in the oven for a sizzling fajita dinner.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beautiful stoneware but not for long. I bought a ten piece set of this style for over $400.  The quality, shape and beauty of this dinnerware exceeded my expectations and was just what I was looking for, BUT... after only one week I was beginning to see scratches in the dark, outer finish.  Almost everything this dinnerware touches (silverware, other dishes, fingernails, etc.) leaves a whitish, silvery mark on the dark, matte finish that does not rub or wash off.  I tried hand washing only (in order to avoid the dishes coming into contact with other items while in the dishwasher) but it became clear very quickly that that was not a realistic solution. And, they were still getting scratched anyway when they inevitably would touch one another while putting them away in the cabinet.  Within two weeks of use the outsides of the bowls and cups were so well covered in marks that the beauty was significantly diminished.  They look like someone took a piece of white chalk and drew all over them.  I am so disappointed.  They were perfect for me, but only for a little while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Perfect Really. 18th Street is positively perfect. We are a very persnickety bunch when it comes to design and finding something we all like is quite a feat.I love the heft of the plates. The bowls are perfect for oatmeal, salads and pasta. I could go on for days on end about the mugs.We cannot think of any purchase in recent memory that has pleased us this much. If you are on the fence, hop off and get this dinnerware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best looking set I love the outer dark surface, with the inside kept light- so the food looks appetizing, and it is better suited to day to day meals. Best looking set of tableware in a long time. I like the handmade feel of this tableware, it gives the table setting a warmth.
