The Story

Modern and restrained in form, expressive and rustic in glaze. The artisan's hand is authentically reproduced in this stoneware pattern designed exclusively for Crate and Barrel by ceramic artist and designer Kathy Erteman at her 18th Street studio in New York City. A contemporary matte black exterior contrasts the rustic beauty of a shiny, speckled white glazed interior ringed with the subtly raised spiral associated with hand-thrown pieces. A raised clay rim features a sandy glaze that evokes the feel of exposed terra cotta. To capture the artisan look of this dinnerware, Erteman modeled prototypes to true scale by hand with her original glazes as reference for production. In the words of the designer, "When making tableware, I consider design and the rigors of daily use. The spirit of my hand in these pieces is modest, to harmonize with and act as a support to the prepared ingredients."

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Plates Chip Easily I've had this entire set for a little less than 2 years, receiving them as part of our wedding registry. Unfortunately, like so many others have reported, they chip very easily. The large plates, especially, have tiny chips along the edge that stand out since the plates are very dark on that side. It looks terrible utilizing these for dinner guests. The mugs are fine, as are the bowls, but the plates are falling apart. Also note that I was these CAREFULLY by HAND! I don't have a dish washer and its just a 2 person household. Considering how careful we are with this set, they're still chipping, which is a sign of poor quality. My other sets are perfect from years of use. I would go with something else if I were you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Break SO easily! I was given 18th St. dinnerware for our wedding last year, on December 22, 2013. I had 8 complete sets. I love the look of it, especially the mugs. Now, 11 months later, I have 4 out of 8 dinner plates left, 5 out of 8 salad plates left, and 7 out of 8 bowls left. 8 out of 8 mugs are still intact. One of my remaining dinner plates has a chip on the edge. Really. So disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very durable yet stylish We bought a 12 piece setting about 3 years ago and I'd have to say that this dishes really hold up. I have a house full of boys and they are hard on these dishes but they still look as good as they day I bought them. They can be dressed up for the big family dinners or just used for every day use. I would definitely recommend these dishes!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Bowls! We love these bowls! We have been using them for a few months and have not had any of the chipping issues described in other reviews. These bowls are solid without being too heavy and have a very unique design that makes them appealing as well as practical. We run these bowls through the dishwasher and are not having trouble with damages. However, treat your stoneware with care - don't subject it to extreme temperature changes and handle it gently. Really great bowls!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unable to Match for Replacements We bought a complete set of this dinnerware less than 2 years ago. We recently needed to replace one of the plates and when we brought the replacement home we found that the design had been tweaked slightly, with the new dinner plate being noticeably larger than the old one. We returned it and now are unable to properly complete our set. This is very frustrating. What is the point of having continuously produced patterns if they are not going to remain truly consistent?

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cracks all over the bowl. I bought this around this June. I was happy for decent price and size of the bowl. However after 4months, it started to crack and chip. I was really disappointed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not durable! Chips easily! I purchased a set of 16 of these dishes just 3 months ago - I liked the more simple, clean look of them, but was disappointed how easily/quickly they chipped. I do use them every day, but generally I am pretty careful handling my dishes. I am going back to Denby!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beautiful but doesn't do well in the microwave Beautiful set. I was skeptical about the shape of the bowls but they are fine with liquids. They arrived with 2 broken items but c&b replaced them quickly. Since then I have had 1 dish chip when I accidentally hit it on the counter, that's the only chip since I've has the dishes for a year. The only issue is that when you put then in the microwave the dishes become very hot but the food isn't...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Collection, Great Value After searching for dinnerware that looked handcrafted, yet refined, this collection was a winner. Online photos do not do justice for how beautiful they are in person. They may be slightly more fragile than anticpated, but agreat value in comparison to similar styles from other high-end competitors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Looks I bought these dishes a couple months ago and they've held up well. I hand wash my dishes because of other reviews about chipping. They look great and they're a good size. Be careful when stacking bowls in cabinet because they could easily scratch or chip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Elegant modern updates old classic ivory plates Best size bowl versatile- great for soups, salad starters or pasta 1st plate and nice and wide for dips (hot or cold); olives and pickles and desserts with berry or hot fudge sauce.Used an extra bowl as a paper clip holder in the office (great way to keep a spareand not have to store it away).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from really sleek and modern, but also quite large We registered for these for our wedding and are pretty happy with them. They're easy to clean, look really classy, and its nice to have a matching set. The only issue I can find is that the bowls are really wide so they're not ideal for some kinds of soups or cereal or anything. They are, however, great as serving bowls for our nightly dinners. One of the plates came slightly chipped and I called C&B Customer service and they sent a brand new one, no questions asked, within a week. Incredible customer service.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Set! Bought this set 2 months ago and love it! Has been washed multiple times in the dishwasher with no scratching or fading of the black underside of the dishes. Am able to stack 4 bowls with some care. Love the look of the dishes and the shape of the mugs! Totally satisfied with this purchase!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice dinnerware We registered for this dinnerware set of 4 place settings for our shower (2 years ago) and have used it daily since then. Dinnerware has held up well in the dishwasher and in the microwave. In May 2014, we ordered another set of 4 place settings, to complete our set. Looks like they may have added additional glaze to the outside of the dishes, so it does look a tad glossier than the first set, but we still love the set
