The Story

Modern and restrained in form, expressive and rustic in glaze. The artisan's hand is authentically reproduced in this stoneware pattern designed exclusively for Crate and Barrel by ceramic artist and designer Kathy Erteman at her 18th Street studio in New York City. A contemporary matte black exterior contrasts the rustic beauty of a shiny, speckled white glazed interior ringed with the subtly raised spiral associated with hand-thrown pieces. A raised clay rim features a sandy glaze that evokes the feel of exposed terra cotta. To capture the artisan look of this dinnerware, Erteman modeled prototypes to true scale by hand with her original glazes as reference for production. In the words of the designer, "When making tableware, I consider design and the rigors of daily use. The spirit of my hand in these pieces is modest, to harmonize with and act as a support to the prepared ingredients."

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gets compliments from my guests! I purchased this set last year ... I liked the style (my mom had heathware, and I always liked those) ... and in part due to the reviews I saw posted.Pros:- the look is simple, but yet there's some complexity to the style with the rings/ridge on the plates.- I love the mugs, not too heavyCons:- Not a lot of serveware; There are 3 total (small bowl, large bowl and large platter).- they are big, and as a result, heavy- During shipment; pieces were broken;- Quality of finish is not consistent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buddha Bowl Maybe I'm just projecting the idea that it's a Buddha bowl onto this bowl. Maybe it really is a Buddha bowl. Either way, I really enjoy eating out of this bowl. You know how sometimes in life you happen on something and you just know: this is it. For me, this is it. The size, the feel, the heft. The simplicity.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for everyday dinnerware This dinnerware set has been great for my family. The plates have wide bases so they do not tip over when trying to cut meats of sorts. The only thing that I think many may have a problem with is the lack of uniformity. Each individual piece seems to have its own uniqueness, good and bad flaws. Some of the pieces aren't fully painted, some of the plates have curves in them. For the amount of money I spent I would expect a little more, everything finished perfectly. However, I try to see each piece as its own, with its unique flaws. lol. As for other reviews saying the plates, bowls get scratches, I have a toddler who oftens uses these items and not once have I seen any scratches. I dish wash and hand wash these and so far so good. The bowl shape's uniqueness can cause some people some issues with loading in the dishwasher, but I am lucky enough to have a really old dishwasher that allows the bowls to lay down at an angle just fine! Overall, I am happy with my purchase and am still looking forward to using them in the oven for a sizzling fajita dinner.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beautiful stoneware but not for long. I bought a ten piece set of this style for over $400.  The quality, shape and beauty of this dinnerware exceeded my expectations and was just what I was looking for, BUT... after only one week I was beginning to see scratches in the dark, outer finish.  Almost everything this dinnerware touches (silverware, other dishes, fingernails, etc.) leaves a whitish, silvery mark on the dark, matte finish that does not rub or wash off.  I tried hand washing only (in order to avoid the dishes coming into contact with other items while in the dishwasher) but it became clear very quickly that that was not a realistic solution. And, they were still getting scratched anyway when they inevitably would touch one another while putting them away in the cabinet.  Within two weeks of use the outsides of the bowls and cups were so well covered in marks that the beauty was significantly diminished.  They look like someone took a piece of white chalk and drew all over them.  I am so disappointed.  They were perfect for me, but only for a little while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Perfect Really. 18th Street is positively perfect. We are a very persnickety bunch when it comes to design and finding something we all like is quite a feat.I love the heft of the plates. The bowls are perfect for oatmeal, salads and pasta. I could go on for days on end about the mugs.We cannot think of any purchase in recent memory that has pleased us this much. If you are on the fence, hop off and get this dinnerware.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best looking set I love the outer dark surface, with the inside kept light- so the food looks appetizing, and it is better suited to day to day meals. Best looking set of tableware in a long time. I like the handmade feel of this tableware, it gives the table setting a warmth.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dinnerware for everyday The dinnerware fits the description on the website perfectly, and they were what i expected for the most part. There were just a few things that became evident after we received them and used them - not necessarily bad, but different. The bowls are not typical shape and so they feel little shallow for daily use such as cereal. The dishes are sturdy, but the also feel heavy when having to lift them into cabinets. The outer flat color seems to scuff easily. I didn't realize the inner dish would have such evident grooves...it gives it appearance of rustic. Also, I ordered two extra dinner plates and bowls separate from the 16 piece set and those were received broken. The service desk was very pleasant to work with and replaced them immediately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful dinnerware I'm totally happy with the dinnerware set. I'm going to buy a serving plate too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pretty enough for special occasions I purchased this set about 6 months ago to use for dinner parties and special occasions. It is unassuming enough though to be used on a daily basis as well though. The only potential hesitation that I might cite is the shape of the bowl which is perfect for soup or pasta but too wide and shallow to be used on a daily basis for things like cereal, etc.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning presentation The dinnerware makes for a stunning tablescape. The matte dark gray finish and the creamy texture on the face of the plates and bowls are very complementary to a myriad of ways to decorate the table. Once the dishes arrived, I bought black, cream, and terra cotta linens to match. Very nice! Love the neutral look. The raised swirls and the design is very effective. I wondered if the raised pattern would interfere with cutting food but it is not an issue at all. The bowls that are part of the set are perfect for salads and soups, even for small side dishes. Nice shape! I ordered the platter and the large and small serving bowls as well. It would be nice if the designer could add a smaller bowl for individual servings.Years and years ago I had purchased the white cafe ware from Crate and Barrel. The dishes lasted for years and I passed them on to a family member. Given my satisfaction with my last C& B dinnerware Ifigured I wouldn't be disappointed with a new purchase and I was right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every penny This is my first purchase with C&B, and I am very satisfied with the timliness of delivery and quality of the product. This dishware fits the description perfectly. It is. Happy merger between modern and rustic, light and dark. Of all the sets this one is by far the most attractive set I've seen.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great set, well priced... Love the fit and finishes and the convenience of this dinnerware. Dinner plate size is particularly appreciated by my family, as our last plates were square and huge. Soup bowls are a bit tough to load properly in the dishwasher, and their width allows food to cool a bit too fast, if food is hot, of course.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just my style I was looking for a relaxed modern look for my newly decorated home. Saw this product in the most recent Crate and Barrel catalog. Checked it out at the store and liked it so much I bought 4 place settings with all the serving pieces. Set on black placemats, black napkins with silver napkin rings and clear crystal, makes a fabulously sophisticated table. I loved it so much I went back to the store and bought another four place settings. Got many compliments from my guests.Thank you Create and Barrel!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Dinnerware Feels Good! This is truly beautiful dinnerware. It is elegant and sturdy, fine enough to use for formal or informal dinners. It feels good to handle, and the pieces are perfectly sized. The design makes food look like it belongs on the plate. I am familiar with fine dinnerware-this is it and a bargain at its current price.
