How to Choose Curtains
- To determine the length for your curtain panels, measure the distance from the top of the curtain rod to the floor. A rule of thumb is to mount curtain rods 4” from the top of the window. Add an additional 1.5–2” to your measurement if you are using curtain rings to hang the curtains.
- Decide how much space you want between the curtains and the floor. Add about 3 to 4 extra inches if you want the curtains to puddle on the floor for a more traditional, elegant look.
- To determine the width of your curtain panels, first measure the width of your window. Multiply 1.5 to 3 times the width of the window depending on your desired fullness.
- In addition to measuring the width of the window, consider how much overlap of hanging curtains you'd like on each side of your window. A rule of thumb is 1-3” per side.
All of our curtain panel heights at Crate and Barrel are measured from the top of the rod pocket to the bottom of the hem. The length of your curtains should mirror the style you hope to achieve in the room, from dramatic to relaxed.
Drapes that are 96” typically hang about 1” off the floor, turning a window into a statement and adding height to the room. Try this length in spaces such as the family room or den.
