Eco-Friendly Woods
Get back to nature with our eco-friendly outdoor wood collections. In addition to the many eco-choices we offer throughout Crate and Barrel, our two wood Outdoor collections are certified sustainable by nonprofit organizations that oversee the conservation and responsible management of millions of acres of the world’s natural forests. The Arbor eucalyptus collection is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. The eucalyptus wood used in our Arbor collection is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)—the “gold standard” designation for wood harvested from forests that are responsibly managed, socially beneficial, environmentally appropriate and economically viable. The Trovata teak collection is supported by the Tropical Forest Trust. Crate and Barrel is the first American home retailer to work directly with the Tropical Forest Trust (TFT). Since 2005, we have worked closely with the TFT to ensure that certain hardwoods selected for the production of our furniture are from plantations that are responsibly and socially managed for their long-term conservation. We have worked diligently and are pleased to announce that the teak in our Trovata collection meets all of the requirements of the TFT through the entire chain of custody, from harvest to final production. Solid Woods Our craftsmen carefully choose woods for the durability and beauty they will bring to our designs. The traditional woods we use are timbers hewn directly from cut or recycled trees. The terms below include many of the durable hardwoods and design features you will find in our collection. Eucalyptus — A fast-growing and easily replenishable hardwood. The eucalyptus wood we use is plantation-grown and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). It is finished with mineral oil to preserve the look. FSC — The Forest Stewardship Council is a nonprofit organization that encourages responsible management of the world's forests. The FSC sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way. Grain — The direction or pattern of the fibrous tissue in wood. An active grain can add desirable character to furniture. Knot — The point at which a stem or branch grows from a tree, creating a round, often darker feature in the grain of the wood. Plantation-Grown — Woods such as Teak that are ecologically grown with the specific intent of being milled. Teak — An extremely dense, durable tropical hardwood. Our collection features only plantation-grown teak with a natural care-free finish. TFT — The Tropical Forest Trust is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote responsible forest conservation through sustainable and equitable social and economic development at all points in the supply chain of the wood, from harvesting to manufacturing.
Joinery
Because wood is a living, natural material, joinery allows for its seasonal expansion and contraction with changes in climate and humidity. While joinery's first line of responsibility is that of connecting two boards, it is a centuries-old craft that adds value and beauty to even our most contemporary wood furnishings.
Metals
Our collection includes exclusive outdoor designs executed in quality metalwork, from classic to contemporary. ConstructionWe design our metal furnishings and accents with easy-maintenance aluminum, durable tubular steel, hand-wrought iron or cast iron. Aluminum — A durable yet lightweight metal that is very malleable and easily shaped. It is naturally resistant to oxidation and will not rust. Cast Iron — Iron shaped or formed by pouring molten iron into a mold. Extruded Aluminum — Round, rectangular, or L- or T-shaped lengths created by mechanically extruding, or squeezing, hot metal through a die. Hand-Forging — Shaping metal by hand using heat and hammering techniques. Tubular Steel — Steel in a circular or rectangular tube form. Welding — Joining pieces of metal together by hand using heat and and molten materials. Wrought Iron — A pure form of iron that is tough yet easily wrought, or worked, into a welded design. Metal Finishes The finishes we apply to our metal furnishings do double duty. They enhance the look of the design and protect the metal from unwanted oxidation. Paint — Sprayed or applied by hand, a painted finish can range from a simple color application to a multistep process for a more decorative effect. Powdercoat — Extremely durable finish achieved by coating metal furniture with electrically charged paint powder that is then baked and fused to the metal surface. The result is smooth, even, durable.
