Catalogs and Marketing

Our catalogs and Furniture Guides are printed on paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

In 2007, 75 percent of Crate and Barrel catalogs had either 10 percent post-consumer waste and/or paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), an international nonprofit organization that promotes environmentally and socially responsible forest management. Beginning in 2008 and continuing in 2009, every catalog and Furniture Guide we publish will be printed on FSC-certified paper.

Marketing Catalogs

Post-consumer recycled paper. And paperless catalogs.

Beginning in 2008 and continuing in 2009, every catalog and Furniture Guide will be printed on paper that is certified by the FSC as being from responsibly managed forests. We also only use paper that is bleached without elemental chlorine. In addition, we also provide an online catalog, viewable page by page, for those who do not wish to receive paper catalogs by mail.

Discovering new papers and technologies.

In the past several years, we have converted our catalogs to a lighter-weight paper and reduced the size of several catalog formats. We have also improved a particular series of catalogs by changing to a paper that utilizes fewer trees, requires less energy and outputs fewer chemicals into the environment. We have diligently worked to improve our database to make sure our mailing lists are up-to-date and accurate to avoid mailing duplicates and undeliverable catalogs.

A new Paper Purchasing Policy company-wide.

In 2007, Crate and Barrel developed a new Paper Purchasing Policy which we consider to be a living document that continues to evolve and improve as we explore new alternatives. We know that this will be a multi-year, multi-phase project. We will review and monitor our standards with our publishing suppliers and partners so that we can track our progress as we continue to implement new environmental programs, and as we seek out new information and technology as it becomes available.
