The Crate and Barrel dinnerware collection is ours and yours alone. We work with designers and artists from all over the world to create exclusive designs of a quality and value found nowhere else.
Dinnerware at Crate and Barrel isn’t about hope chests and matchy-matchy formal place settings brought out once a year (or twice, if you’re lucky). It’s about breaking tradition and choosing more modern, relevant pieces that live like you, every day. It’s versatile patterns you can dress up or down. It’s layering shapes and mixing color. It’s a newer way to collect and use your pattern—in fact, it may even be combining several patterns. And what fun. Because you never ever have to set the same table twice.
Bone China
Our top of the line dinnerware. Crate and Barrel
bone china is elegant, thin dinnerware with an incredible strength and an
almost luminescent glow. It is of such a fine and translucent quality, that
light can actually pass right through it. But don’t worry, day in and day out, our
bone china is the most durable, chip-resistant material there is. Our exclusive
white Anna offers the exceptional quality of fine German bone china at a price
you cannot find anywhere else. Its beauty is its simplicity. Anna can stage a
gourmet dinner party, the family holiday buffet or carryout sushi. And like all
of our bone china, it can go right in the dishwasher.
Porcelain
Sophisticated china with a little less expense. Fired at extremely high temperatures, Crate and Barrel porcelain is fine to the touch and lightweight without being delicate. Our collection features contemporary designer patterns created exclusively for us by renowned artists and ceramicists. For instance, the intricate dot pattern of Celadon draws its inspiration from ancient Japanese handkerchiefs. Depending on your choice of accessories, this neutral, textured design can set a contemporary table one night and a traditional one the next. All of our porcelain patterns are dishwasher- and microwave-safe.
Stoneware
The reactive glazes we choose give stoneware a smooth, kiln feel and clean, modern look. Take a close look at Samoa, handcrafted for Crate and Barrel by one of the first French ceramic studios to pioneer crackle glazing. It contrasts a subtly ringed, high-gloss crackled moss green interior with a matte satin charcoal exterior that resembles cast iron. A “fondant” of crystal sweets is applied with a ladle, then fired to achieve the unique crackled glaze, with each piece unique in appearance. Extremely durable, high-fired, non-porous dinnerware that can go straight from the fridge to the oven/microwave to the table to the dishwasher.
Earthenware
Trend, form, texture, fashion. Crate and Barrel earthenware is like a change of wardrobe, and priced a little less seriously so you can. Our earthenware is high-fired, but at the lowest temperature that will successfully produce dramatic glazes. Our exclusive re-issue of Classic Century by designer Eva Zeisel is a study in modern shape and form in a pale cream satin glaze that is anything but neutral. Earthenware can go in the dishwasher and microwave at low heat settings.
How Much
We suggest 12 place settings each of your china and everyday patterns. There is a significant savings when you purchase complete place settings and sets.
4-piece and 5-piece place settings. Our china and everyday patterns are
available in both 4-piece and 5-piece place settings. A 5-piece place setting
features a dinner plate, salad plate, bowl, cup and saucer. A 4-piece place
setting substitutes a mug for a cup and saucer.
Open Stock
Open stock is a great way to add on extras of the most-used pieces of your pattern. We offer each of the individual pieces in a place setting, as well as coordinating serving pieces which may include bowls, platters, a sugar bowl, creamer and teapot. We suggest two sets of dinnerware. First, a great white—a classic, fine white bone china or porcelain that will become your be-all, serve-all. They are quick-change artists, allowing you to layer in pattern, color, interesting shapes…even your grandmother’s dishes to bridge the generations at dessert.
Set two? Go for a trendier stoneware or earthenware pattern with an interesting texture, unusual glaze or graphic design. A pattern that can work with your white china will come in handy if you entertain large groups.
