The Crate and Barrel dinnerware collection is designed to create distinctive tables casual to elegant, every day to every special occasion. We work with designers and artists from all over the world to create exclusive designs of a quality and value found nowhere else.
Dinnerware at Crate and Barrel is designed to be a part of your day, every day. Whether you’re just starting out, just married, or just love to entertain. Our versatile designs can dress up or down. They can mix, match and layer shapes, whites and colors. They can do breakfast, lunch and holiday dinners (speaking of which, you can even choose two patterns that can work together for a large gathering of family and friends). And what fun. Because you’ll never ever have to set the same table twice.
Bone China
Our top of the line dinnerware. With just a little TLC, it can last forever. Crate and Barrel bone
china is fired at high temperatures, resulting in an incredible strength for every day and an almost
luminescent glow for special occasions. In fact, it is of such a fine and translucent quality, that
light can actually pass right through it. But don’t worry, day in and day out, our bone china is the
most durable, chip-resistant material there is. Our exclusive Kensington pattern by Nikko offers the
exceptional quality of fine bone china from Japan at an exceptional price. Kensington is one of a new
generation of Crate and Barrel bone china patterns with a modern spirit and a classic flare that can
stage a dinner party, the family holiday buffet or carryout sushi. With a choice of grosgrain blue or
pearl rims, its fine platinum edging can go right in the dishwasher.
Care: All of our bone china is dishwasher–safe. We recommend the use of a rinse aid to minimize hard water spots. Bone china banded with metallic is not intended for use in the oven or microwave; however, our all–white bone china patterns are oven–and–microwave-safe. To increase longevity of use, avoid sudden temperature changes. Over time, flatware may leave silver or grey deposit marks on bone china; repeated use of a mild abrasive cleaner (as needed) may help minimize their appearance.
Porcelain
Sophisticated china with a little less expense. Fired at extremely high temperatures, Crate and
Barrel porcelain has a solid feel, yet is fine to the touch and lightweight without being delicate.
Our porcelain collection features contemporary designer patterns created exclusively for us by renowned
artists and ceramicists. Our exclusive Roulette pattern by Queensbury Hunt of London is a popular Crate
and Barrel classic. Its fresh shape rounds modern with a wide linear rim in all white or edged with a fine
blue line. It’s the perfect fusion of modern times and timeless functionality.
Care: Most of our porcelain patterns are dishwasher, microwave and oven–safe. To increase longevity of use, avoid sudden temperature changes. Over time, flatware may leave silver or grey deposit marks on porcelain; repeated use of a mild abrasive cleaner (as needed) may help minimize their appearance.
Stoneware
Stoneware is extremely durable yet allows for rich color. This dinnerware can also feature
reactive glazes that create a smooth, clean, modern look. Take a close look at Nuit, handcrafted
exclusively for Crate and Barrel by Jars Ceramics, one of the first French ceramic studios
to pioneer crackle glazing. Nuit contrasts a twilightblue-grey interior with a matte satin midnight exterior that resembles cast iron. Zen coupe shapes
are extremely durable, high–fired to a non-porous two-tone effect. Jars enamel glazes created from
minerals and natural pigments are prized for their true color and subtle characteristics unique to each piece.
Care: Most of our stoneware is dishwasher–and–microwave-safe; may warm at low oven temperatures. To increase longevity of use, avoid sudden temperature changes. Over time, flatware may leave silver or grey deposit “scratches” on bone china; repeated use of a mild abrasive cleaner (as needed) may help minimize their appearance
Earthenware
Trend, form, texture, fashion. Crate and Barrel earthenware is like a change of wardrobe for
the table. Our earthenware is high-fired for durability in a beautiful range of colors, shapes and
finishes. Designed by Brooklyn-based industrial designer Olivia Barry, the creamy English earthenware
shapes of Spool feature distinctive carved rims inspired by the natural lyrical patterns drawn in sand
dunes by the shifting desert winds. The play of light and shadow on the surface frames the culinary
center of attention with a festive energy.
Care: Earthenware is for a special customer who can appreciate its unique qualities and provide a little extra TLC. The crazing or “crackling” that will evolve in the finish over time creates earthenware’s special antiqued character. Crazing occurs as the clay expands and contracts; it is an aesthetic affect only with no associated hygiene or health issues.
Because earthenware is more prone to crazing and chipping than other materials, we recommend handwashing promptly after use without soaking, or clean in the dishwasher on a gentle cycle with a mild non-abrasive, non-citrus detergent; turn off the heat dry cycle and let dishes dry naturally or wipe dry by hand. To minimize hard water spots, use a rinse aid.
Earthenware is microwave-safe on medium and low settings only, as it heats more quickly than other ceramics or glass. Avoid sudden temperature changes as this may also cause cracking or crazing. Over time, flatware may leave behind silver or grey deposit marks; repeated use of a mild abrasive cleaner (as needed) may help minimize their appearance.
How Much
We suggest 12 place settings for each of your patterns. There is a significant savings when you purchase complete place settings and sets.
4-piece and 5-piece place settings. Most of our china and everyday patterns are
available in both 4-piece and 5-piece place settings. A 5-piece place setting
features a dinner plate, salad plate, bowl, cup and saucer. A 4-piece place
setting typically substitutes a mug for a cup and saucer.
Open Stock
Open stock is a great way to add on extras of the most-used pieces of your pattern. We offer each of the individual pieces in a place setting, as well as coordinating serving pieces which may include bowls, platters, a sugar bowl, creamer and teapot. We suggest two sets of dinnerware. First, choose one that’s love at first sight. A trendy pattern with an interesting texture, unusual glaze or graphic design. Something that’s the talk of the table. If you entertain in large groups, choose a pattern that can work with your everyday place settings.
Set two? Go for something you’ll love living with every day. Super durable, this will become your be-all, serve-all. Keep in mind that simple classic whites are quick-change artists, allowing you to layer in pattern, color, interesting shapes…even your grandmother’s dishes to bridge the generations at dessert.
We recommend service for 12 for each set.
