Growing up in rural Michigan, Tom Marks spent his boyhood climbing trees, playing with dirt and sticks and exploring creeks and farmers’ fields. He developed a love of grit and texture that has remained a source of inspiration for his art.
At 21, he bought his first camera on a whim. “After my third roll of film, I was totally hooked,” Marks recalled. He soon took to the streets capturing images in major cities in the U.S. and abroad—first as an artist, then as a newspaper photographer.
