The Story

A most proper English-style sofa influences and a most unstuffy, unexpected living room manner. The experience is as sink-in-comfortable as it looks with deep cushions tailor-finished in a slubby linen blend with top-stitch detailing. Elegantly tapered front legs with black walnut stain.

After you place your order, we will send a fabric swatch via next day air for your final approval. We will contact you to verify both your receipt and approval of the fabric swatch before finalizing your order.

Essex Apartment Sofa with Casters is rated 1.3333 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from such a poor choice on my part The feathers in the cushions smell. The cushions sag so bad that we had to place plank of wood along with 2" foam to keep the seat cushions from sagging in the middle. We are thinking about have all the cushions ticking replaced to get rid of the feathers that poke out and smell. Not a couch to nap on or sit on for that matter. I am just over embarrassed when I have guests come over.We had just retired from the Navy two years ago. After PCS moving from here to there we were so excited to buy a new couch and chair for our new home.  I told my husband it HAD to be from Crate and Barrel. I get so disappointed every time I look at it.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Looks Alone It's a considerable investment in cost and commitment to a specific style, so I'll be as detailed as possible.I have to agree with the other reviewer.  We bought the sofa with casters, chair with casters, and ottoman with casters.  While the set has an amazing look - friends have commented on it - the insides are obviously substandard and disappointing.  My husband uses the chair and ottoman daily and though less than a year old, it looks like we've had it for a decade.  We are vigilant about fluffing the cushions thoroughly every few days and rotating them every few weeks, but it boils down to poor quality fill.  The sofa is used less often, but has the problem of flattening down to a hard surface after a few minutes.  I can only sit in one place for a half-hour of so before my bottom goes completely numb from the lack of cushion.  Again, looks aren't the issue - you can fluff these pieces up to look brand new, but the reality of every day use is that they aren't super comfy.  The two back cushions on the sofa have such potential to be the big-soft-cushy-melt-into-them type cushions, but once the air is squeezed out when sitting back, they offer no comfort or support at all.  If this were a cheaper sofa from some corner furniture outlet - I'd say, "c'est la vie."  But, for this price and from this retailer - we're not so impressed and are surprised at the lack of quality. In addition, the fabric isn't exactly easy to care for.  We are empty nesters - no children in the house and we keep a clean house - but, we never anticipated how dirty this set would look after only a few months.  I say "dirty", I think "dull" is a better description.  I just purchased a solvent-based cleaner (as recommended) and hope it will un-dull the fabric!  If the cleaner works out, I think we will invest in having the cushions re-filled professionally.  I'm guessing that the set will last for years if we can get it comfortable enough to actually want to use it that long!We never formally complained to C&B about the cushions because by the time the furniture is even slightly worn, your window of opportunity has been closed.  It would be nice if they'd step up and offer some kind of supplemental fill - but, we aren't holding our breath.  As to C&B's general customer service - AMAZING.  We have no complaints whatsoever.  We purchased a couple other substantial pieces from them and it's been a pleasure doing business with them - in-store, online, or by phone.Oh, one final comment - while the casters look great, they do roll easily!  This can be frustrating when someone "plops" down and away they go... and if on a wood floor, get something to protect the floor - the casters will do subtle damage to the wood if you don't!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great Shape, Poor Fill I bought this sofa almost 2 years ago after looking at the competition. I decided to go with Crate&Barrel for the price even if I already had a "not so good" experience with a previous Crate&Barrel sofa (already complained about the fill to my husband). After only 6 months the cushions of my new sofa started being flat. I could not believe it ! But I was pregnant, expected my first baby and had something else in mind than complaining to Crate&Barrel at that time. But I am right now vacuuming the Essex sofa and decided to share my review because this sofa is now very uncomfortable, I barely seat on it. After only 2 years, the fill should be replaced - unacceptable to my point of view. I will never buy again a Crate&Barrel sofa. Next time I will pay a little bite more but get a more durable and comfortable sofa. FYI I bought other pieces of furniture at Crate&Barrel and I am happy with them.
