The Story

The familiar lines of classic Italian design reinvented with comfort and value in mind. At a glance, you notice the generous, clean Parsons-style lines and fine quality leather in vibrant cherry. Up close, it's the small details that make the big difference: solid welded steel base, full wrapping in aniline-dyed leather with mitered corners, and seat and leg with full flange seaming. A thick, sculpted leg supports the comfortable, foam-cushioned seat.

Folio Cherry Bonded Leather Side Chair is rated 2.9355 out of 5 by 31.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Peeling & deteriorating finish Like others I bought my set 5ish years ago, and the finish is now quite disgusting. They are in a summer home and get only 2 months of use per year, and I've occasionally cleaned them as instructed with no harsh product, but they look terrible and apparently have to go in the trash. I have the real ones from DWR in my other home-more expensive, but they still look perfect after 10 years of hard use!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bonded leather is not durable We also purchased 8 of these chairs back in 2007 and within a year started having problems with the bonded leather. They look great new, but over time these chairs will deteriorate. We are exploring options to cover the backs (we've recently added cushions) to give these chairs more life - I am not in the mood to spend $2k for new chairs at the moment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and sturdy! Bought these dining chairs to pair with the Basque dining table. Makes for a great combination of a little more contemporary with the rustic. The chairs are solid and are quite comfortable, just enough padding to sit on and a gentle curve to the back for lumbar support. I love the cherry red - adds a great pop of color to my dining room. So far, they have held up well to my 11 and 9 year old boys. This is our daily use, every meal, table and chairs. The only thing I wish chair makers would incorporate is a better way to add felt padding to the bottom for those of us with wood floors. These chairs have an oval shaped plastic bottom, so I have had to go with the small round, sticky felt pads and hope they don't fall off. So far, so good.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Cracked and peeling I really like the look and feel of these chairs but all 6 of ours started to crack and peel on the tops of the chair back. I have always been careful to clean them periodically as instructed and am very disappointed to watch them fall apart.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed Like many of the other reviews we bought 4 of these chairs 6 years ago and they already need to be replaced. The leather has peeled and cracked. They look awful. I'm so disppointed. Don't waste your money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from don't buy These chairs i bought after 2007 and they have not held up and the store misrepresented the product. I will be leery of every product at crate and barrel from now on.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not as sturdy as it looks We also bought 6 of these chairs 4 years ago, and thought that they would last a long time, as they fool you into thinking that they are easy to clean and sturdy. Unfortunately for us too, the leather started to peel off 2/6 chair,at the sitting area part of the chair and looks TERRIBLE. Don't be fooled- they are pretty and look like they can handle anything- but you will need to replace them within 5 years- if you use them regularly- especially if you have kids. and also- if you happen to brush the chair accidentally against the wall- it will leave a stubborn red mark.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 4 years & counting I've had these chairs for about 4 or 5 years and never read the reviews.  The other night we had a dinner party and a little spill turned into a huge black area on the seat with the top of the "leather" totally scrapped off when the guest tried to wipe it clean.  We don't sit on their chairs regularly as they are in the dining room, so they have held up great for me, but with regular use I can see the problem that the other review talk about.  I was really disappointed when this happened but I realized also that the chairs are really "cheap" and the leather is not leather at all.  Too bad it took having a guest try to clean up a little spill - turn nightmare - and now they insist on spending $250 to replace the chair.  Not worth the money in hindsight.  They look great though...just don't scratch them in the slightest as the thin top layer will come off and you will be left with a gross dark under belly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cherry Folio Chairs, Exactly as Promised The three chairs arrived at my door in southern California in less than a week, in two shipments. The color (cherry) is exactly as it is depicted online: true red, fairly dark, not too bright. The construction is extremely sturdy: no wobbly legs or back. No assembly required--they come out of the box ready to use. The leather (or leather composite or whatever it is) is very attractive--smooth, with a satin finish, not shiny. The visible stitching matches the color of the leather and is perfectly done. The seat is rather hard, just slightly cushioned; if you're accustomed to heavily cushioned dining chairs these will take a few days to get used to--after that, if you're like me, you'll appreciate the extra support. The style you can judge from the pictures--in my decor, which is contemporary, the chairs are right at home and look as expensive as they are. Overall, the quality is outstanding and worth the price.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Big Disappointment! We bought 6 of the Folio Cherry Leather Side Chairs for our Dining Room. We have had them 6 years. For the first 5 years, they were fine, but last April, one by one they all started peeling. My husband got up after sitting on one of the chairs recently, and the red leather dye was all over his pants. I have never seen anything like it. Very disappointed! Figured they would last longer than 7 years, since they don't get used very much and are not abused.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Worst Leather Ever Bought four chairs in cherry lasted for as long as no one sat in them! The seat marred, wrinkled, and scratched they look terrible. I needed two more chairs to complete the set. Now looking for new chairs

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad quality leather At first, we loved the look, but the leather cracked and they are in very bad shape now.We bought 8 of these chairs for our dinning set and all of them cracked in the same place.I would not recommend this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressive! We bought the Folio chairs about seven years ago and now when we needed more, we wanted them again. However, in looking at the chairs we noticed cracks in the top of the chair so we were wary of ordering more. However, in reading through the reviews (which also noted these cracks) I noticed a response from Crate & Barrel that those criticisms had been responded to and that the chairs were now being built with a reinforcement across the top to prevent the crack. How impressive! C&B actually read the reviews and fixed what was wrong. So we ordered 8 more chairs feeling confident that this problem had been fixed. Way to go, C&B!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from not genuine leather Sadly, if you look at the fine print it explains that this chair is covered with split and bonded "leather" not genuine leather (split “leather,” also called bicast “leather,” has only a thin inner layer of leather that is completely hidden underneath textured polyurethane.) Split “leather” doesn't wear well, can't be repaired and needs to be thrown away instead, gets worse with age instead of developing a pleasing patina. A good analogy is that split leather is to genuine leather as particle board is to solid wood. In some other countries it is actually illegal to even market split "leather" as leather because it is so misleading a term. Split "leather" only makes sense if you are looking for disposable furniture.Crate and Barrel used to have a reputation as a purveyor of *value* so it is sad to see that they are following the new trend of offering bi-cast/split/bonded "leather" furniture that is ultimately *not* a value when its extremely poor durability is taken into account. I am going to have to look elsewhere for leather side chairs. Please reconsider your strategy of selling bi-cast/split/bonded "leather" furniture Crate and Barrel! It will damage your reputation in the long-term.
