nice table
I really like this table. The finish is extremely dark almost black depending on your lighting. It fits great in my breakfast area. Purchased matching cushions. It does seem like it would have the tendency to scratch easily, but I have been careful with it.

Excellent Table
This table is excellent, really high quality and super-easy to put together. We paired with cream Lowe chairst since the matching chairs weren't our favorite. We love the dark finish -- can't wait to get our buffet and hutch!

Great Table
We recently purchased this table and love it. Note that the wood is quite a bit darker than in the picture. It is a deep chocolate, not quite black. I liked the darker look, but if you want something that looks more walnut like, then it will be a little too dark for you.

Beautiful table; wish they would have unboxed it
My husband and I purchased the Kipling dining room for our new home together. We absolutely love the look of it. it is very classy, with both a touch of modern and traditional at the same time. It is darker than the pictures online make it appear, but we saw it in person so we knew what to expect. It is heavy and a quality wood table. We haven't had it long enough to validate scratches, but we plan on being careful and using a table runner to help preserve. The only reason why I gave it a 4 and not a 5 is that for the price we paid, we expected it to be put together upon delivery. While putting it together was not difficult, unboxing it and hauling away all the box and packing material is really a lot of work. No regrets, but just wanted to set other buyers expectation. The delivery people will unbox and take away the packing material of the chairs and buffett/hutch, but not the table.

Love the look but not the softness
I recently purchased another chair (we broke one-please do not uses them to stand on-one of the front legs broke off). Anyway, I have to agree with prior reviews in that these chairs scratch and indent fairly easily from rivets on jeans, mostly. We also have the bar stools. The table we have is not the kipling table, chairs and stools only. However, despite the fact that the wood is fairly soft, I love how the chairs look and they are comfortable to sit in. One way to protect them further is to use chair cushions, but that's not my thing. My purchase was made entirely online. Everything shipped great.

Durable seat cushions
I've been looking for seat cushions to fit my older chairs that did not have buttons. These are a perfect fit. Love the fact that they are washable. Since they are cotton, they shrank a bit, but stretched back out.

Beautiful & Classy though Slightly Delicate
I agree with most of the reviewers to date and read their reviews carefully before purchasing. The table is gorgeous and classy is a simple, understated way. It's perfect for 6 people and expands to accommodate 8-10. It was well packaged and easy to assemble and is very sturdy.
It's true that the finish is somewhat delicate and shows dust, fingerprints, etc. but we knew this up front and were prepared to treat it accordingly. We have a padded runner on the table at all times and a padded table liner for when it's in use. For the number of times we actually have formal dining, it's a small price to pay relative to the beauty we get to enjoy year round with our set present as a focal point in our open floor plan home.

Great Table
Overall, we are thrilled with this table. We love that it is solid wood, not veneer. There were a few small scratches when it came out of the box, but the sales consultant was really helpful and told me how to easily remove them. The color is a bit dark, but it will probably lighten over time.

One for the ages
I LOVE our table. I cannot wait to grow old with it and maybe pass it on to our children. The shine and structure of the table is amazing and the insert has allowed to have wonderful dinner parties with everyone at one table.

Great Product
Purchased table in 2008 and love it still. Wood has a wonderful color in the sun.
Kipling chairs dent easily when pushed into the table so be careful.
Scraches and dust show easily.

Classic and Traditional...
...with just enough design to make it modern.
My husband I were blessed to get enough wedding money to buy the extension table and the buffet and hutch, and we couldn't be happier!
I love the rich colored wood and the traditional design in the turned legs. It's so hard nowadays to find turned legs on something that doesn't look like it belongs in your grandmother's house! - which is great because we don't like the more modern straight/square legs. It's also great that it's more compact, but still seats a decent number of people. I love dinner parties with this set!
Like other reviewers said, the wood is soft, and dents easily, but that's solid wood for you - it's not as hard as engineered wood, but it's natural beauty is worth the softer material!
I can't say enough how much we LOVE our furniture - perfect for our first home!

great table
The table looks great. Exactly as pictured. We haven't used it a lot, as it is at our vacation home. But it is of good quality. I purchased the buffet also, and it is just the right size...not too big for the room.

Scratches too easily
This table is lovely but scratches up extremely easily. Even the most careful use will leaves scratches on this table unless you keep a cloth on it all the time.
It is very easy to assemble in minutes and the leaf is simple to insert.

Scatches with ease
Love the look of this table. It's a beautiful finish with a nice, dark red hue. The leaf offers versatility in size and with it inserted, you can very comfortably seat 6 and less comfortably seat 8.
The first table we received had large, waxy build-up marks running the length of the table from the packaging. Unfortunately we treated that first table with kid gloves and when C&B replaced it with a second table, we found out just how easy it scratches. Playing a simple game of cards (with regular old playing cards) left a plethora of scratches. We've tried several remedies to fix these and none has worked--the scratches appear to be in the lacquer finish. I do not recommend this table to anyone who plans to have it uncovered. And covering it seems like such a shame as it's so beautiful. And there's the catch.

too dark - almost black
5 starts for design and quality - 1 star for color. (I recommend if you don't mind a black table.)
Everything is true - it is a beautiful table with graceful lines - a nice blend of contemporary and traditional, but my table is black! I worked with a furniture maker throughout graduate school, so I know that mahogany is a dark wood and the description says a clear lacquer finish, but this clear lacquer is on top of dark stain - it is not simply bringing out the beautiful rich tones of the wood... If you are familiar with wood, the finish on the table I received is darker than black walnut.
In fact, you really have to strain to see any wood grain at all and the color in no way resembles the images that crate and barrel has on line - especially the close up view of the wood. I live in an area where the closest Crate and Barrel is 5 hours away. I know their products are typically of great quality and I liked the look and price of the table. In the end, I still like the design, but I really did not want a black table. Now I have to decide if I want to live with it or go through the hassle of returning it. Disappointed...

Terrific chairs
absolutely love the kipling chairs! we purchased them to pair w/ the cabria table.. they look great! only negative- 2 chairs arrived broken from shipping-- crate and barrel was extremely helpful in replacing immediately.. could not be happier w/ this purchase..

Kipling Table
I had shopped a long time for a new formal dining room table and finally settled on the Kipling. It arrived last week - its rich dark hue and graceful legs are now a beautiful focal point to our dining room. We invited a close friend to "inaugurate" the table last night with a formal dinner. We are planning to have many more such wonderful evenings with this table at the center.

Good Quality; Small Table
I just purchased this dining table for a 12x12 dining room. The table was very well packaged and easy to assemble -- no scratches, dents, etc. The quality is sturdy -- real wood, great color. However, I warn people on the size. It is a very narrow table in function -- you can just about set the table and maybe have a small amount of room for a few serving plates in the middle of the table. Further, it does not comfortably sit 8 people when extended. It barely sits 8 when extended...and it's not comfortable. Overall, great table -- just be careful with the size.
