The Story

Like its namesake, this casual, contemporary dining group is big, bold and natural. The rustic beauty of Big Sur lies in its solid European white oak with naturally occurring splits, cracks and knots (see additional photos). Its intricate, narrow grain is produced by a colder climate, making each piece unique. Supporting the table are four hefty legs, each crafted of a single piece of heartwood, exposing the tree's inner rings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunning table! We bought this table 6 months ago and I just recently reapplied the beeswax to it. We use the Howard Feed-N-Wax and it's great. Water seems to bubble up instead of soaking into the table so it's easy to wipe right off. Definitely requires more care - always using place mats, coasters and trivets, as well as reapplying wax every 4-6 months, but when you're paying $2k for a table, you should be taking care of it! We got it with the bench on one side and 3 cream Lowe chairs on the other and it's perfect.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful showpiece table We bought this table 2 months ago and I love it more every day. Honestly, the natural quality of it and lack of a varnish is what makes it so beautiful. With that said, yes, keeping it beautiful is a concern for me. I use coasters and placemats (waterproof) and am very "aware" of when my husband and I have any liquids on the table. This table is an investment and we treat it as such. We absolutely love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rustic and refined This table is a perfect combo of rustic and refined--nice wood grain but clean lines. Heavy heavy duty. We are using it in a eat in kitchen so its a great way to make it more formal when needed but looks casual on a day to day basis.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Watermarks, watermarks, everywhere! The table is very stylish, but the watermarks are just impossible to keep away. I use the beeswax C&B recommends on the insert that comes with the table but many coats of it still doesn't help. I came back to the site to see if anyone had a solution because I am at the point where I may try to seal the table with Thompson's WaterSeal. I wonder why they didn't do that to begin with?I'll give the lemon oil treatment a try. Very disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! Love it! Love it! Wow, this is a stunning piece of furniture. Yes some maintenance is required but it is well worth the effort. Every single person who has come to dinner is enamored with its look and construction. I bought the bench also, three chairs on the opposite side. Highly recommend

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Big Sur, Big Table My husband and I were looking for a quality dining room table that would make a statement. The overall look of the table is beautiful. The color is rich and the table is very sturdy. The splits in the legs add a rustic feel. We enjoy the fact that there are no bars or legs in the middle of the table that people can hit their knees on. Many other reviews complain about there not being a finish on the table but a lacquer finish would ruin the appeal of this table. This piece needs to be handled with care which is no different that any other furniture made out of solid wood.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Good, The Bad, The Watermarks OK - when we bought this table we were instructed by the C&B associate to apply beeswax religiously to add a layer of protection against water, stains, etc... They even gave us a sheet with some recommended vendors. Once we got the table home we didn't let any of our kids near it until we applied the beeswax AS INSTRUCTED. It's been almost a year now and we've been battling watermarks regularly - anything that has moisture will leave white watermarks on the table - NO MATTER HOW MUCH BEESWAX YOU USE. And once they're there they are EXTREMELY difficult to get rid of. So this morning I decided to buy some Old English Lemon Oil ($3.49) from my local Target to see if it would help get rid of the marks. Guess what?!?! My table has not looked this good since the day it was delivered. The Lemon Oil has worked miracles!!! No more water marks and the wood looks amazing. I used it sparingly because I didn't want a shiny table and it worked perfectly. I highly recommend that you try the lemon oil if you're having a difficult time maintaining this table. I have yest to have someone set down a glass, or get any water on the table, but I am just thrilled to have found a watermark remedy that is easy to apply. We are very pleased with this table and it's construction (it's built like a brick house) and now we really get to enjoy it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful table Bought this table about a month ago and love the look.  However, I do see what everyone else is saying.  The finish came off when we tried to get some gum marks from packing tape off.  I will apply some beeswax this week and I hope that it will protect the table.  I am also concerned that the sun is shining on it so I cover during the day…a little bit worried about the maintenance but I absolutely love it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from beautiful table We have had this table for almost a month and it's lovely. As with previous reviewer, there are knots and cracks and I feel fortunate ours didn't have the drop out of the knot like they experienced which I hope they can have fixed or replaced. We have several deep stressed cracks that seem natural to the wood but it doesn't affect the table or bench. The finish is gorgeous - much better than I expected. I used an all natural beeswax and applied two coatings which really helps with our dry climate as well as overall wear of tabletop. Love this table (didn't think I'd ever write that about a piece of furniture!) and would definitely recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic table bought at Crate and Barrel Outlet We bought this table at the Crate and Barrel Outlet. It had stains and water rings and some fading where someone who didn't know how to clean a wood table obviously returned it. When we first saw it I thought it would need refinishing and re staining(which was okay). When we brought it home and put it under our dining room chandelier the stains were more noticeable. We took a microfiber cloth and pledge to it and with a little bit of work, it was as good as new. I cant find a single water ring or stain anywhere on the table and 2 months later it still looks fantastic. Keeping up with a solid wood table is necessary. If you looking for a table with no maintenance look for one with a  lacquered finish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wish we'd had this a lot sooner! The quality, substantive style and finish on our table and bench are more than we expected to find.  We added a lambswool throw atop the bench and spend many hours together each week - connecting! - around our table.  And we have room for frequent guests, who often comment how much they wished they "had this" at their own homes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful Table The Big Sur Table in Charcoal finish is pretty dramatic, almost an Ebony. Only have had table for a week. Only issue with table is on bottom where a large knot had dropped out prior to staining. Crate&Barrel states that there are knots and cracks in table and I had seen this table in store so I expected this, just not a large hole in bottom. Top is 1 1/2" thick, but the hole in the bottom is 3/4" deep. that leaves 3/4" of top covering hole. I'll probably apply some epoxy inside hole to protect it, otherwise love the look of table.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Big sur charcoal table Beautifully made table which has been left down by its disappointing finish. Having bought the table approximately 2months ago, we noticed that even with the smallest of spills cleaning the table with the softest of micro fiber cloths will start to remove the finished stain. Rub it anyway hard and you have pale patch on your table. Edges of the table where people sit have all the stain removed from arms and hands rubbing against it.This table will need constant staining and continuous bees wax polishing. Now while that in itself is not a big thing to do, for the price I would have never expected to put this amount of work into a dining table. After all as a dining table it should withstand normal day to day use.
