The Story

Pure and simple. Clean Asian shapes have a thin, elegant feel and sophisticated color palette of subtle celadon and matte black. Porcelain is fired at a very high temperature, with the cooling process creating the beautiful crackling of the glossy glaze. This traditional artistic effect is food safe, though it may discolor when exposed to foods that can potentially stain until it is cleaned in an automatic dishwasher.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Store! My husband and I registered for the Kita Dinnerware for our wedding and are very happy with it! It's easily stackable to maximize our cabinet storage space and all food items that may stain have come out of each item.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great dishes! I have had these dishes for almost 9 years and they have been fantastic. I always get compliments on them from guests. I have only had 1 of the low bowls crack, but for the amount of wear on them, that is not too bad in my book!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Have bowl and dinner plate I bought the dinner plates and bowls and didn't realize they weren't dishwasher safe so I rarely use them. I was looking for higher quality dish ware and I got it, but I don't use it as much as I anticipated. If you're fine hand washing, then these are excellent choices.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic dinnerware for rustic kitchen My husband and I were looking for the quality dinnerware that would match our rustic-inspired kitchen. We forged the high-end retailers' collections and finally found a collection that aligns with our style. It's cream colored with darkest blue borders; Simple, yet has personality. Even my mom approved (and she is hard to impress!). Must do the platters and big bowls too! Dishwater safe, classic and strong quality. Love this collection!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beautiful, but not durable enough for everyday use We received the full set of Kita place settings and servings dishes. We began to unpack them and multiple items were broke in our hands just stacking them in the cabinet. They were gorgeous, but couldn't risk keeping them because they were so fragile. C&B was great in the return process though.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from These crack We registered for these and 3 plates have already cracked. I'm disappointed in the quality.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Proceed With Caution The Kita is a lovely design and style.  As part of our wedding registry, we were very excited to receive the entire collection.  Over the last 5 years of normal/light use we have had 10 bowls, 4 plates, sugar bowl and creamer crack and chip! By no means are we hard on our dishes--especially now knowing how "fragile" they are. We never had a problem with staining with hand washing or dishwashing. I am disappointed by the poor quality delivered from Crate & Barrel, and surprised to see that Kita is still available for sale.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Durable and beautiful I agree with the former purchaser that these dishes are a good buy for long wear. I've had them five years and only one dish has broken, when we dropped it on the floor. No knicks in all that time. We have the entire set, serving dishes and all. I use Bar Keeper's friend to clean any residue. I would definitely recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great and durable. 6 yrs no chips I'm totally mystified by the negative reviews here. I have had these dishes for 6 years, and none of them have so much as a nick or a chip. And I'm not a careful person. They get banged and clanked when putting them away. I've knocked plate edges HARD against counters, and there's not so much as a scratch on the enamel. The coffee cups will stain, so if that's a problem these aren't for you. However, I have not had a problem with staining on any of the other dishes. I make a lot of Indian food, so I tend to rinse the dishes if they have things with turmeric on them before putting them in the dishwasher, but even when I forget to do that, it hasn't been a problem.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DON'T BUY THESE!!! These look great but have the poorest quality I have ever seen.  One of our mugs literally fell apart in my wife's hand while pouring water into it! The price makes it even worse.  Got these in 2005 for our wedding, we started with a full set of 8, and are down to 3 sets and no coffee mugs!  Avoid like the plague.  I would give this -5 stars if possible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 7 years and we love them! We have had these since we were married over 7 years ago. We fell in love with their clean lines and loved that they were porcelain, a nice compromise between china and stoneware. We use them everyday. We now have a child who uses these as well. We rinse them before putting them in the dishwasher and have had no staining on our plates. Some of the mugs and tea cups are stained, but that's to be expected with serious tea drinkers such as ourselves. As a fun aside, I saw "historic" Korean and Japanese dishes in a museum and noticed it looked almost exactly like Kita! Roughly 1200 years later the design is still rocking!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love Kita! My husband and I registered for the Kita line back in 2009 as our everyday dishes and we are thrilled. As long as you follow the recommendations about rinsing and properly washing you will not have any issues with staining. We've had a few chips and breaks, but no more than any other dishes that we have owned. We hand wash and use the dishwasher, but we never microwave them.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't do it We have had these for six years...we decided to replace a ton after a move (didn't break during the move but before). What were we thinking? These break so so easily. Color from food gets into the cracks and often times after eating something red like spaghetti sauce, you have to wash them 3+ times to get the red off the plate. But they are pretty...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not purchase It's a fashionable, modern pattern, but they chip, break and stain so easily. The cracks absorb food colors and all the ones that have broken have been right on the cracks that are suppose to be part of the design.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Exchange? Reading the other reviews, I've had the same experience -- bowls and plates crack and chip so easily. We had one that split completely in half when we microwaved it! They're supposedly oven and microwave safe...It's such a beautiful set, but it's the poor quality is unbelievable considering the brand and price.Have any other reviewers had success in getting an exchange for a more durable set?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Breaks and chips Bowls have almost all broken or have chips just from normal use.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Stains!! My husband and I really loved this dish set. We got every piece we could. Now that we use it on a daily basis, we notice that it stains. It soaks up colors and oils from food. I contacted the store about this and they told me that they are discontinuing this product and that I was welcome to bring all pieces back and exchange them for another dish set. Great customer service.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Kita I bought several Kita dinner sets. It is a beautiful set. It has the Japanese style I want. However, there are many problems with it. The biggest problem is the staining. Anything with color will stain. It can be clean with bleach, but what a hassle. And, although microwaveable, I worry that stain will set-in. Additionally, Kita is easily breakable. It does not take much to crack it. Finally, the cream server drips whenever you pour something from it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No complaints We've had these dishes for about 18 months now - both sizes of bowls and three sizes of plates - and we use them everyday. We throw them in the dishwasher and so far we haven't had any problems with chips or cracks. I think they are beautiful and all the negative reviews about quality concerned me, but so far we have found them to be great. We avoid microwaving tomato sauce or curries which can stain anything, really, and we have not experienced stains.I will say that the mug and saucer weren't for us but the rest of it is great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Delicious dishes I was so surprised when I came across the reviews for the Kita dinnerware. I thought for certain it would have a 5-star rating. i have loved my set from day one. They are simple enough for everyday, yet beautiful enough for special occasions. I have noticed some staining from time to time.......but it always fades away. I did have one bowl crack (though it is still usable) but that was only because I dropped a heavy bowl on top of it. I do not own a dishwasher or a microwave, perhaps this has helped my set to hold up well. If you've only got space for one set of dishes..........these are a terrific purchase.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Do Not Microwave! We chose this set as our everyday dishes back in 2008 when we got married. We liked them well enough, but we have broken so many without even trying. They do not stand up to heat very well at all--biggest culprit being the microwave. We contemplated replacing a few dishes and mugs here and there, but the rate of breakage just keeps accelerating with time and it's not worth it!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible Quality As with a lot of the reviewers, my husband and I are extremely disappointed with the quality of these dishes. We registered for a set of 12 for our wedding in 2006. We have 5 bowls, 8 dinner plates and 7 salad plates left. Of the ones that are left most have stains in the decorative cracks which generally is a precursor to the dish breaking. It is so disappointing that a product like this came from Crate & Barrel. My mom had a set of Crate & Barrel dishes for 20 years and only stopped using them because she passed them down to one of my siblings.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Poor Quality Like many other reviewers, my husband and I registered for the Kita for our wedding in 2009. Out of 12 place settings we have only three salad plates and six dinner plates left, and of those remaining most of them have chips. Temperature chance seems to be a big factor, but not always the cause. The other day my husband knocked over a half empty small peanut butter container onto one of the plates and it shattered. Terrible quality and very disappointing. It makes me sad that I am already replacing something so important from our wedding registry.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Kita Low Bowl I purchased 12 place settings of the Kita dinnerware and absolutely love it. I wanted to complete the set with the low bowls and serving platters. I received the low bowls and am very disappointed. The quality is the same as the dinnerware set, but they are so shallow I don't know what you would use it for. They call it a bowl, but it is more like a slightly deeper plate.I also found their serving bowl and platter are quite small.Love the dinnerware set, but am not impressed with the design of their accessory items.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing Like many reviewers we were newlyweds who received our Kita dinnerware as wedding gifts. after just 6 months of use we noticed cracks, chipping and staining of all pieces. I've always been happy with C&B quality which is why we chose C&B for our registry. Truly disappointing. We will have to replace the set in the next year. The set is only 5 years old - we expected much more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these! We have had these dishes for over 4 years and we love them. They are the only dishes we have so we use them for everyday, but they also look great on the dinner table for holidays and dinner for guests. We use them in the microwave and dishwasher daily with no problem. Once in awhile one will take on some discoloration if it is microwaved with red sauce. However, it always comes off in the next round in the dishwasher. We do have one plate that appears to be cracked but it has not broken yet. We just don't use that one for company. Otherwise, no chips or breaks!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wedding Gift My wife and I received these dishes as a wedding gift in 2007. Nearly all of the plates (both sizes) and bowls have either chipped, cracked, or taken on color in the crackle glaze.I guess these are okay if you plan on only using once in a while, never microwave, and always hand washing them...but if these will be your everyday dishes, I'd say look for something else..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from love them I came to the site looking to replace one of my dinner plates that broke. Only it didn't break as other people have said it broke because my 2 year old dropped it on a tiled floor. I have to say I am surprised at the reviews as our set which we got back in 2009 has held up great. We have moved several times and all of my plates, mugs, and bowls have survived. Only have one bowl that is chipped, but this doesn't come as a surprise to me as how they are handled between kids and husband..The dishes can take on some color but as said in other reviews if you rinse them they are fine. I love these dishes and can't wait to buy more to add to our set. I get compliments on them all the time. Very happy customer..

Rated 4 out of 5 by from jjsburner The kita chargers are everything we expected and we like them, however the first shipment all 3 were broken. Customer service was helpful and quickly sent 3 replacements, but they were no better packed than the first shipment and one was broken. Again customer service was very responsive and we finally completed our order but it took three shipments

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't Hold Up Under Normal Use I've had these dishes, which are beautiful, for a few years and one by one from the very beginning the plates cracked. I am surprised because they are porcelain. I think that they are not really microwave safe and that perhaps the crackle glaze makes them brittle. As a matter of fact we no longer put them in the microwave with the hopes of maintaining the ones we have that aren't cracked. I don't recommend them even though they are lovely.
