Wow!
I put this on my wedding registry because I didn't have any cookbooks (although I am an avid "cooker"). I guess my generation thinks you can just google stuff and you can find a recipe. I knew this was a classic book and it can seem a little intimidating until you really look at it. It has EVERY recipe -from many of my family's German recipes that are hard to find-to Mexican, French, American, etc. It also have a great Sauce and Dressing/Condiment section that has every sauce you could think of-from bechamel to a general Chinese garlic sauce or a mustard. It also explains a lot about technique and the food, and eventhough you might watch a lot of Food Network, there is something about this book where you feel like you are getting a better understanding. I read it in my spare time even if I am not planing a meal. I have only tried a couple of recipes so far, but all have been good. Can't wait to try more!

Best cookbook ever
My husband and I received this cookbook as a wedding gift and we have thoroughly enjoyed using this book. Every recipe we have tried has been delicious and so much fun to make. I agree that it can be a little intimidating at first, but I am still learning how to cook and this book is my best friend. PLUS the chocolate chip cookies in here are the best I have ever made and I have gotten TONS of compliments on them :)

Staple Wedding Gift.
I will be giving this at every wedding from now forward.
My husband (the real gourmet chef) and I (the dappling in dessert hobbyist) both love this book. It is the first one we turn to for almost every meal, special and otherwise.
It can be overwhelming to try using this reference guide on the first recipe, but once you get used to turning to 7 different pages to make the best black forest cake you've ever tasted, it's worth it.
Straight forward, no frills, amazing dining instructions. Love it.

It's a must have!
This book is a must have, esp. if you are just starting out cooking real meals or trying to be more adventurous in the kitchen. There are great recipes and tons of tips. This book goes much farther than most cookbooks because it has tips on cooking in different altitudes, how you can replace one ingredient for another in a recipe, how to use different knives, etc. I recommend it for any registry, for a housewarming gift, and for yourself. I'm very happy with the Joy of Cooking!

A lIfetime of learning
This is possibly the best investment a person can make when learning how to cook. Growing up, my 3 older sisters and I would use it to bake cookies, pancakes, breads and anything our minds could come up with. I made sure I had one when I got married and started a household of my own. My family considers it the Bible of cooking!!

The only cookbook you will ever need!
THE GO-TO cookbook! It has everything you will ever need. The recipes are great, but that is only part of the book... it is like the encyclopedia of cookbooks. A must have for your kitchen!!!

If you could only have one cookbook, this is it!
I love this cookbook! Everything I have made from it turns out well and the instructions are clear. I like the wide variety of dishes and desserts, I am yet to be stumped to find something I am looking for.
This is a great addition, it has the old recipes that were removed from an earlier addition. I compared it to my MIL's addition she got in the 1970's and the changes are for the better.

If you only have 1 cookbook, this is it!
Every page is a lesson in shopping, prepping, cooking and baking. If you can't decide which cookbook to buy, especially for a novice, this is the ideal choice with helpful explanations and illustrations - let alone delicious recipes!

No pictures needed
So my husband and I both typically rely on images in our cookbooks to help us determine if we'll like a recipe. What we've found though is that the Joy of Cooking really doesn't need the pictures. We haven't been disappointed yet and we love that it offers variations on almost every recipe!

A must have
This is my go-to book for any cooking questions. It has it all and is a must have for the kitchen.

absolute must have
This is a great go to book for things like sauces and any of the basics you might not know exactly how to make. I couldn't cook as well without it!

A must-have for every kitchen
I was first introduced to this cookbook while in college and it was one of the first ones I purchased when I got married. I don't tend to flip through it to decide what to make. Rather, if I ever want to find a recipe (for anything!) this is what I turn to. All the recipes I've tried have been consistently good and flavorful.

A Staple in any Kitchen
This book has so much to it. It seems that everything you could want to make, any technique you want to master and any suggestions for becoming a better chef can be found in The Joy of Cooking. This was one of the cookbooks that helped me learn to cook and gave me such a love of cooking. I'd recommend it to cooks of any level. The only downfall is the lack of pictures, as I prefer to see a photo of the steps and end result, but there is still plenty of value without the pictures and it is one of my favorite books ever.

Don't fear -- Updated edition is great
This is not the original Joy of Cooking, but instead has been updated and modernized by the grandson of the original author. The original soul is still there, though, and the updates add a lot of value. I use this book for EVERYTHING, and consider it the definitive source on technique. Should be a part of every kitchen.

A Kitchen Standard
Every cook should have a copy of this book in their collection. I turn to Joy of Cooking anytime I need a classic recipe and it never fails me. It is chock full of cooking and ingredient tips as well.

The Encyclopedia of Cooking
I reference this book almost every time I cook. It's great for learning and has taught me how easy it is to bake and cook from scratch. I recommend Joy of Cooking to all my newlywed friends.
