Overview
Maija Isola contributed more than 500 patterns to Marimekko over the span of her career, with the Joonas ("Jonah") series being one of her first successes in 1964. Inspired by the sight of sun dancing on the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, Joonas is named after the story of Jonah and the whale. Feeling that sitting inhibited her artistic expression, Maija composed Joonas to the sounds of pop music using wide black brushstrokes while standing over large rolls of paper in the spacious Marimekko factory. In her words, "I danced with the brush."
