What I Like What I Like

As the Visual Designer for our New York area stores, Celeste Sisson has an enviable eye for what works in a room, and there's no better proof of it than the modern, eclectic Harlem apartment she shares with her husband and son. But it's the bedroom Celeste regards as her personal sanctuary, so her aesthetic choices are even more critical. Using the room like a canvas, she uses shape and texture to balance its composition. Here she talks about why she loves these Crate and Barrel pieces for the bedroom.

    Pelliccia 18" sq. Pillow

I think the bedroom should have a vibrancy to it, but that doesn't necessarily have to mean color. This pillow, made from cozy, fluffy Mongolian wool, provides texture, warmth and a hint of bohemia to the space's predominately clean lines.

    Lyle Side Chair

In my opinion, every room needs an element of surprise, and this galvanized steel chair, used as a nightstand, fulfills that role beautifully. The contrast of metal with the room's organic shapes and neutral textiles keeps the space from feeling too staged. Plus, the chair has a back-up purpose: extra dinner party seating.

    Lima Alpaca Mandarin Throw

I love this ultrasoft throw not only because it adds a dose of rich color to a room, but also because it doubles as a wrap on chilly evenings. Available in an array of rich jewel and earth tones, it's also great for midday naps atop the bed.

    Marimekko Hetkia Moments Tray

This small-scale birchwood tray is a great catchall for jewelry items while also adding an element of art to the room. I love the relationship that Marimekko has with their artists-each piece has a story behind it. I connect with this particular design because it's reminiscent of my hometown of NYC. Hetkiä ("moments"), Maija Louekari's 2003 hand-drawn Helsinki sidewalk scene, observes the brief encounters of modern urban life. The quick black and white sketch mirrors the anonymous pace of the city.

    Bedside Carafe

An elegant necessity—such as this nighttime glass-and-carafe set—brings design and function together beautifully. I get parched at night and hate to get out of bed, so I always need water close by. The cup does double duty as a protective lid, keeping germy particles at bay.
