Modern and restrained in form, expressive and rustic in glaze. The artisan's hand is authentically reproduced in this stoneware pattern designed exclusively for Crate and Barrel by ceramic artist and designer Kathy Erteman at her 18th Street studio in New York City. A contemporary matte black exterior contrasts the rustic beauty of a shiny, speckled white glazed interior ringed with the subtly raised spiral associated with hand-thrown pieces. A raised clay rim features a sandy glaze that evokes the feel of exposed terra cotta. To capture the artisan look of this dinnerware, Erteman modeled prototypes to true scale by hand with her original glazes as reference for production. In the words of the designer, "When making tableware, I consider design and the rigors of daily use. The spirit of my hand in these pieces is modest, to harmonize with and act as a support to the prepared ingredients."

United States

Describing herself as a modernist with minimalist leanings, Kathy Erteman is a New York-based ceramic artist and designer. She is known for objects that are simple in form with lively surface detail and color. Drawing inspiration from early 20th-century European design and a pared-down Asian aesthetic, she imagines her work being in homes “where art and design dissolve into function with personal style.”

Erteman received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University, Long Beach. Upon graduation, she interned with Judy Chicago, renowned for her “Dinner Party” installation. Erteman went on to develop her own body of celebrated work, exhibiting internationally with objects in private and public collections, including the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Currently a teacher at Greenwich House Pottery, Erteman recently received a Nwang Choephel Professional Fellows Cultural Exchange Fulbright award in partnership with Aid to Artisans to work with Tibetan potters in Yunnan, China.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sadly breaking in microwave in less than a year My wife and I received these as a wedding shower gift about 10 months ago. We really like the whole set but unfortunately we have had 1 bowls, 2 mugs, and 2 small plates and 1 big plate that have broken after microwave use over the last few months. They are often breaking clean through the middle splitting them in half. The sets look nice and we like them but unfortunately are losing pieces fast

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing, break even with gentle use I received this set as a wedding present and it hasn't even lasted a year. 1 tea cup handle came unglued within a few weeks. Another cup split in half when I poured hot water for tea into it. Another started leaking from the bottom after a few weeks. One of the plates split in half when I microwaved it, even though it clearly says the dishes are microwave safe. What is the point of having dishes that last less than a year that are this expensive? I would NEVER put them in the over because mine can't even handle 190 degree hot water.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful dinnerware, does seem prone to cracking We love the look and style of these and are generally very happy with them, however, we have had them for more than a year of VERY light use (we eat out much of the time) and have already had two items crack with no obvious external force. One came out of the dishwasher with a large crack down the middle. Another broke in my hand when I picked it up, empty, from the edge of the dish.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So jealous! I bought this for a bridal shower gift, it was on her registery. When I got it I took everything out to check for possible damage and I fell in love with them. Might have to purchase some for myself!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Balanced! When registering for flatware, my fiance wanted something more masculine than my preferred style (he does a lot of cooking, so this was a fair request!). We feel in love with the 18th Street line as it is both masculine and neutral, with an earthy feel. I was concerned about the weight, but they are surprising lightweight compared to their bold appearance. I thought the ridged pattern might get in the way when cutting, but it goes unnoticed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Looks great on my table & is very durable I bought a set of these during a sale and wasn't sure how I would like them. I love both the customer service ( one plate arrived broken &I was quickly replaced) and the dishes, although I use the bowl for salads since its WAY to generous a serving size for ice cream or soup!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful set! I bought 2 sets of the 18th Street dinnerware in matte black for my daughter's bridal shower from her registry. First I did go to the store to check out this set. I fell in love with it immmediately. The style is classy, modern, the plates are not heavy at all. ( I thought it might be a heavy stone) Love the bowls. I even bought the napkins & napkin rings that were set up on the table in the short hills store.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Several pieces cracked and chipped I received the 18th Street dinnerware as a wedding gift. It has been less than a year and one dinner plate cracked completely in half in the microwave (even though this set is advertised as microwave safe), another small plate chipped, and several other plates, a bowl, and a mug have visible cracks that you can feel when you run your finger over them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this Dinnerware! Beautiful design and very durable! Have bumped it against my granite countertop and it didn't even chip! Absolutely love it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 18th Street Dinnerware We registered for this set for our wedding. It is the only china we opted to get since neither of us wanted an expensive set of fancy china that never gets used. So far we love the set. Only complaint is the bowls, they don't work very well for cereal or soup since they are large but shallow. Overall we have been very happy with these dishes!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We love our 18th Street dinnerware set! I bought our 18th Street dinnerware almost a year ago. We love the style; even though it's casual, we will likely love its classic design for a very long time. There have been a couple little chips on the edge of two dinner plates (probably from unfortunate dishwasher placement?), otherwise, these dishes have been completely durable. I haven't seen any scuffing, as mentioned in other reviews.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good experience I have used these dishes for 1 year and have been overall satisfied with my purchase. That being said, there are still some flaws.Pros- Very beautiful! I have not had a problem with the black parts getting scratched and I don't find the plates to chip as easily as some of the other reviewers. I have 2 chipped plates but one was definitely my fault -when I dropped it! I also don't understand the cereal dilemma several others mentioned- the bowls function as bowls- just fine for me!Cons- I would not recommend these plates as microwave safe. I have had one slightly crack after microwaving briefly. Something else that could be bothersome is the dishes are not of consistent quality. Some of the black finish is glossy, while others have a matte finish. At time of purchase I returned a flawed plate but cannot remember why and I had another plate come with a glaze flaw (stained) but I was too lazy to return it.These beautiful dishes work perfectly for me and I have been happy with them! They are mass produced, however, and require some extra quality inspection when purchasing!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Pretty but do not last We received these dishes as a gift from our registry about two years ago. I loved them in the store, but unfortunately they do not last. With normal use, most of the pieces have chipped or been scuffed. It's disappointing because this dinnerware set was of the biggest items on our registry.
