How to Host a Summer Party with 100 Layer Cake

We’re happy to announce an exclusive partnership with 100 Layer Cake—a beautiful destination for wedding inspiration.

Every month, they’ll show us the creative ways they celebrate life’s special occasions with their favorite Crate and Barrel registry items.

Anyone out there in Registry mode right now? Summer is the one season you might find yourself throwing a festive soirée at a moment’s notice (another sunny day = another cause for celebration, amirite?) so having everything on-hand is key. When it comes to outdoor parties, we’re all about keeping things casual and fun, which is why all the Registry essentials we included below are festive yet laidback. Be sure to add them to yours so that when the occasion calls for it, you can whip up a beautiful party on the fly. Now… onto the main event!

We dig the low table look when it comes to backyard parties, it opens up endless opportunities for comfortable lounge seating. With a rug bringing it all together, it’s like an entirely new space right at home. The Helena Vanilla Linen Tablecloth is a perfectly cozy pair with the Brenner Sesame Fringe Pillow for outdoor dining, if you ask us. Who wouldn’t want to kick back here with a glass of rosé on a warm night, anyway?

The Tropical Natural Palm Placemat + Sequin Dinner Napkin are one of our fave combos in the whole ‘scape. Such a good way to amplify a place setting while being able to use some of your everyday plates.

If you didn’t know, the tablescape isn’t just about the table anymore. Especially with this lower, more earthy setup, bringing in other decor elements will create that cozy vibe in a backyard setting. Be sure to include the Lillian Brass Lanterns if you’ll be dining outdoors so guests can chat well into the night. Incorporating a variety of sizes adds depth and a warm glow to the space.

Oh, and these peachy blooms? Turns out, this year’s peach wedding trend translates pretty amazingly to dinner parties and outdoor events. Keep your table bright with shades of peach desert-y florals like banksia, cacti, and pincushion protea. Don’t forget, you can decorate with fruit too! Kumquats and oranges tie it all together.

Okay, the food. Kinda a big deal when you’re hosting! It’s summer, so you want to keep both food + drink pretty light. Serve up a few grilled apps and crostini before you break out the main course (more on that in our blog post). Of course you can’t go wrong with light summer wines like your fave rosé, which goes with warm-weather fare and brightens the table at the same time.

We’ll assume you already have the Couture Rose Gold Flatware Set on the Registry. Indisputable summer staple, right there.

Our menu, for inspiration: fresh California grilled + raw veggies, grilled whole Dourade Royale, and summer stone fruit crostata (served family style, below).

Basically, you want fresh, light, and bright food that adds to color and interest to your table and gets guests *really* excited about sitting down together.

Don’t forget to add a few cozy throw blankets like The Weldon Taupe Throw to your Registry, too, for when the temps drop off at night! We never miss a chance to snag pieces that will flow from one season riiiight into the next, as many of our picks above do.
