Wedding Inspiration — Joanna and Rich

crateandbarrel.com

Recently engaged? We’re excited to announce a series about real weddings to provide our couples with a little extra inspiration as they create their big day. Happy planning!

Meet Joanna and Rich. The recently married couple met in May 2013 and recently tied the knot with a gorgeous wedding in downtown Chicago. From simple, neutral decor to DIY touches, see what made their love list.

What was your favorite thing about your day?

I love so many things about that day. From getting ready with my best friends and taking pictures on Michigan avenue…

To that moment the doors opened and I walked down the aisle, and later, our first dance (to a fast song!).

But I think what takes the (wedding!) cake is just how happy everyone in the room was. You could really just feel the love and how much fun everyone was having, and that was really the goal – to throw a great big fun party (that also looked beautiful!).

How did you decide on your venue and theme?

We knew we wanted something more on the loft/raw space that we could make our own.

When we found our venue Gallery 1028, we knew right away this was the place. It has original wood floors from the late 1800s and exposed brick walls to add to the charm.

From there, we wanted to keep all the decor classic, simple and neutral. We kept to ivories, blushes and light gray tones.

For lighting, we had lots and lots of candles everywhere (votives, hurricanes, etc.) and chandeliers. I was going for more of a timeless glowy/neutral look versus a ton of color.

What personal touches did you add to make your wedding unique?

One of my husband’s really good friends, who is his sailing and law mentor, was our officiant. And another good friend of mine did all of the calligraphy for our invitations and place cards.

She even used calligraphy on little chalkboard signs I found that we placed throughout the venue at the dessert table, the bar and the gift table.

Lastly, our cake topper included a bride, a groom and a cat, to represent my cat Moe. Had to have her there with us in some form! Anyone that knows me knows I’m a cat lady at heart.

What is your favorite thing that you registered for?

I love, love, love our new flatware Mesa. It feels great in your hand and the hammered look is unique but still classic.
