Small Space Nursery Design

June 11, 2018

Limited on space with a little one on the way? Check out these tips for how to turn a petite room into a comfortable nursery using multi-purpose furniture.

Planning a nursery in a small space can seem overwhelming. Where do you begin? How do you fit everything your newborn is going to need into that room that housed a dusty desk?  That’s where our Design Studio experts come in to help convert the space into a cozy and welcoming home for your baby to grow.

In any small space, the first element you want to consider is the color palette. By choosing even-toned room colors, you can fool the eye into thinking your room is more spacious than it appears. Get inspired by sweet earth-tone hues that create a cozy and warm feeling. Subtle bedding patterns and a textured rug (we love this one!) will keep the space from feeling dull.

You can also create an illusion of expansiveness with floor-to-ceiling curtains. We recommend bringing in curtains the same color as your walls, or just a little bit darker to achieve this look. The lack of color contrast with the wall makes the room look wider, while the long curtains make the ceiling look higher. For the walls, choose simple decor and take advantage of vertical space by opting for a  larger print or a mobile. Below, you’ll see how we used a quilt hanger to turn baby’s bedding into a piece of wall art.

What about furniture? Look for multi-purpose items to maximize your space. Our Hampshire crib easily converts into a toddler bed (with optional rail) and a 9-drawer dresser offers a large storage solution. Don’t forget a place to rest during late night feedings and storytime, opt for a low footprint rocking chair and a pouf to rest your legs. Poufs are great for traffic flow in a small room and much easier to move than an ottoman.
