Modern Gender Neutral Nursery

February 15, 2017

Post by Shawna, Home Stylist from the Land of Nod’s Design Services Team

Shades of gray, marigold and robin’s egg blue come together to beautifully balance this gender neutral nursery.

Clean, modern furniture accessorized with the folk-like Fox Table Lamp and nostalgic Lion Rocker is surprisingly unexpected, yet subtle. Cool hues are combined with a delicate shibori pattern in the Pyramid rug, while confetti dots scatter the walls in a sweet, dreamy palette.  I chose this vintage-style alphabet wall art for its gentle use of color, also the adorable animals in the print are the perfect accent to our super soft Baby Animal knit bins!

Free Printable Scavenger Hunt

Free Printable Scavenger Hunt

Our sweet twins are Christmas babies. Having a birthday so close to the holidays has always proven tough: how do you plan an event to celebrate their special day, when there are several other special days to compete with? This was our first year giving them a full-on birthday party – they let their party planner know what theme they wanted, and who to invite for their big day!

Free Printable Scavenger Hunt

Their only request was that the party be camping themed; they love to cozy up in their sleeping bags, make forts around our home, and go on scavenger hunt adventures with Mom and Dad. Unfortunately, another potential challenge with winter birthdays is the temperature; we wanted to have fun activities for the children to enjoy inside our home, so an indoor scavenger hunt was the perfect idea.

Free Printable Scavenger Hunt

The kids had a blast hunting through our home for flashlights, gummy worms, trail mix, flowers, pine cones and fake bugs…all in which they were able to take home in their treat bags.

A Nursery for the Whole Family

February 13, 2017

Post by Danielle, Home Stylist on The Land of Nod’s Design Services Team

One of the emerging trends we’re really loving are nursery designs that reflect the personal style of the Mom and Dad to be and make the room a welcoming and approachable space for the entire family. The idea is to select pieces that you really love and can see yourself using down the road in either your child’s “big kid” room or in a different room all together.

Instead of going with a theme or pattern that may or may not suit your little one’s personality in a few months, this approach opts for more neutral, classic pieces that will stand the test of time. Decor, toys and artwork are great ways to incorporate playful accents that bring in touches of your little one’s personality and interests!

Staying Active Indoors

February 10, 2017

Post by Rebecca of Not-So-SAHM

Staying Active Indoors

We’re just getting to that point of winter when we are all really sick of being indoors. We’ve actually had a mild winter in D.C., but with no snow to enjoy and the swinging temperatures making everyone under the weather, it’s been a rough season. And while the kids are great at keeping themselves entertained, I’ve had to come up with a few new ideas to keep them active even if they can’t get outside. So I was so excited to have them try out a few of Nod’s great game sets to get them going. Check out the fun they had and my tips for helping kids stay active indoors!

Staying Active Indoors

1. Bring classic outdoor games in. Think of all the games you played outdoors as a kid and which might work well inside. Hide and Seek, Simon Says, and Hopscotch are all perfect options for gross motor practice. Well, hopscotch with The Land of Nod’s Hop, Skip, and a Jump Playmat that is! It took me a bit to remember how to actually play, but once we figured it out, our kids loved this playmat and beanbags.

Staying Active Indoors

2. Keep it silly and fun. Don’t make it feel like gym class (although, let’s be honest, gym class is definitely among my kids’ most favorite school “subjects”). Keep it silly and add extra fun ways to get them moving. We upped the ante in our Livingroom Lanes Bowling game by having each kiddo come up with a signature celebratory dance after they’d knocked down all the pins. Their moves were so good, no one even received a delay of game penalty.

Staying Active Indoors

3. Don’t stress about making a little bit of a mess. I am generally not mess-averse (you’ve seen our art projects!), BUT I usually have the kids keep big toys in their rooms. You might need to lighten up a bit when cabin fever sets in. Think of cleanup as an extension of the activity and have the kids do as much as appropriate for their age. These two were pros at setting up the pins over and over. Plus, they loved figuring out how to pack up the pins in the cute bag.

Staying Active Indoors

4. Include some brain exercises too. Keeping kids’ brains active is just as important to their health as exercising the rest of their bodies. And intellectual workouts make them more likely to sleep better at night too! Look for simple games that require some strategizing such as Checkers. We loved Nod’s oversized Checkers and Tic-Tac-Toe set!

Staying Active IndoorsStaying Active Indoors

5. Make movement a motivator. Even if the game itself doesn’t focus on movement, think of a creative way to incorporate it. Our kids got much more serious about their Tic-Tac-Toe games when I told them that the loser would be picking a physical challenge to perform. We gave the loser a choice of burpees, climbing some stairs, or jumping jacks. They actually love all of those, so they weren’t unhappy to lose!

Polka Dot Birthday Party Decorations

February 6, 2017

Post by Giulia, photographer and blogger at Giulia Doyle

When we have a birthday party at our house, I like to gather family to celebrate with some simple decorations. Things that come together easily, that are happy and fun and aren’t specific to a theme are now a favorite as the kids are getting older.

Polka Dot Birthday Party Decorations

I like to work with party decorations and home décor items that come together easily and make a big impact. Here I started with the Basic Toot Sweet Party Kit. The happy dots liven up a dreary winter day, work for both girls and boys and who doesn’t love a good polka dot? To break things up a bit I interspersed the table with the Unicorn Party Cups and a more grown up looking  Happy Birthday banner. (By the way, that banner has little slits next to every hole so you can easily arrange the letters without having to slide them along the string  – it’s genius.)

Polka Dot Birthday Party DecorationsPolka Dot Birthday Party Decorations

Instead of using the cupcake decorating pack for cupcakes, I decided to place a bunch of the toothpick characters on my cake and popped a few on our lemon cream filled donuts. The toothpick characters are incredibly detailed and have fun fabric and raffia details.  I also decided to use the cupcake liners for snacks, which keeps grubby fingers away from bowls. You don’t have to use everything the way it’s originally intended, just as you can see with with the felt garland I used to break up the table cloth. It’s meant for room décor, but looks fabulous over the small dots.

Polka Dot Birthday Party Decorations

One of my favorite things is how a large number of patterned paper pinwheels look when they are hung above a party table. They are fun, easy to use and not very expensive. In this case they frame the Happy Birthday banner perfectly, but could also easily be hung from the ceiling above a table, in a window or from a tree; the possibilities are endless. The mix picks up on the fun dots, but also breaks up the patterns.

The Land of Nod has a great selection of party décor items, many for kids, but many perfectly suited for grown-ups as well. I usually have trouble picking my favorite. Happy celebrating!

Nursery Finishing Touches

February 3, 2017

Post by Stephanie, Home Stylist & Event Planner from the Land of Nod’s Design Services Team

Planning the foundation of a nursery is pretty straightforward. If you’re starting from scratch, you’ll need a crib, a changing station, a rocker or glider, and storage (definitely storage). These are the basics that will get you a functional nest for your new baby. Things start to get tricky when you it comes to adding the finishing touches – those important details that evoke the personality of mom and dad and their aspirations for their bundle of joy.

Anderson Crib  |   Milo Glider  |   Sepia Woven Storage  |  Heritage Rug  |  Fox Crib Bedding  |  |  Wall Art  |  Paper Mache Mobile  | Throw Pillow  |

Wall décor is an easy go-to for customizing a nursery design. Simply hanging a colorful print above the crib can turn a room from generic to oh-so-special. Also essential is picking out bedding. Whether you’re looking to stick with a gender-neutral design or go all-out with a theme, bedding is a great way to bring color and personality into a space. To cap off the design, adding an area rug and throw pillows is the perfect finishing touch to tie the room together. I like to think of the floor as the “fifth wall”, so if you’ve played it safe with neutral wall paint, a rug can be a great opportunity to introduce a bold statement.

Valentine’s Day Sparkling Fruit Punch

February 2, 2017

Post by Rebeccaof Not-So-SAHM

Valentine's Day Sparkling Fruit Punch

You might have heard that we are BIG fans of Valentine’s Day in our house. We love to love, what can I say? But all the extra sugar going around for the holiday can make for a bad scene, so I try every year to come up with something sweet that isn’t chock full of it. Once I spotted The Land of Nod’s Tropical Punch Baby Quilt, I knew exactly what I wanted to make: a healthier fruit punch!

Our kids are always after us to buy them those brightly-colored drinks that are absolutely awful for you. So I remade fruit punch with plenty of real fruit and no-sugar added juices, plus a little sparkle to make it more special. It did the trick!

Valentine's Day Sparkling Fruit Punch

Sparkling Fruit Punch Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup organic 100% cranberry juice
  • 1/2 cup organic 100% white grape juice
  • 1 can sparkling water (I used La Croix Apple Cranberry which paired really well)
  • 5 or 6 strawberries (I am OBSESSED with cutting the berry into heart shapes for the holiday: just cut off the top, cut in half, and cut a little wedge out of the top to create a heart shape)
  • 1/2 blood red orange, sliced into wedges
  • 1/2 apple, sliced into thin wedges
  • A handful of blueberries
  • 1/4 lemon, sliced into thin rounds

Valentine's Day Sparkling Fruit Punch

Directions

  1. Layer sliced fruit into a tall pitcher.
  2. Add fruit juice and then 3/4 can of sparkling water.
  3. Place pitcher in the refrigerator for 1 – 2 hours to let the flavors develop.
  4. Pour in tall glasses and top each off with a little more sparkly water for fresh bubbles.
  5. Share the love!

p.s. this is almost like a sangria mocktail, so it would work equally well for adults looking to celebrate the holiday a little healthier too!

Soft Nautical Nursery

February 1, 2017

Post by StephanieHome Stylist & Event Designer on the Land of Nod’s Design Services Team

Creating a nautical-themed nursery doesn’t necessarily mean anchors and pirates set against a blue and red color scheme. If you’re looking to take a softer approach to the undersea design motif, the Marine Queen crib bedding collection is the perfect alternative. The soft, 100% cotton crib quilt features a gathering of fish, seahorses, and clams calmly napping with the Queen Octopus herself in tufts of aqua-colored seaweed.

Soft Nautical Nursery

What is more nautical than the bubble-esque Cosmos floor lamp? The gold finish brings a sense of warmth to the space and compliments the aqua, pink, and purple color scheme in the crib bedding and Fretwork rug.

Soft Nautical Nursery

If you’ve got a collection of different furniture styles you’d like to use in your room design, try sticking with a single, unifying color for each piece. I recommend choosing a neutral color, like white or grey. For example, two pieces of furniture with unique design attributes such as the vintage-inspired Jenny Lind crib and the modern Joya rocking chair find common ground in neutral white paint and upholstery.

Trend Roundup: Just For Fun

January 31, 2017

Post by StephanieHome Stylist and Event Planner from the Land of Nod’s Design Services Team

The Just for Fun trend is all at once nostalgic and modern and iconic and futuristic. It is bold hues and geometric patterns. It’s robots and space monsters and unicorns. It’s stripes and polka dots and triangles and squares. It’s your first boombox that played your favorite New Kids on the Block tape over and over and over. It’s the hours spent playing Nintendo after school in your best friend’s basement. If you listen closely to the sound of the Just for Fun trend, you just might hear the metallic clang of an Autobot battling a Decepticon.

A ten-year-old boy might find a thing or two to geek out over within the Just for Fun product assortment. If the Googly-eyed pouf doesn’t capture his attention, then surely the TV-shaped throw pillow or the Tetris-inspired duvet cover will. This kiddo will probably have a no-fear approach to wall paint and pattern, so you can bet a set of bold striped curtains and a bright pop of true yellow wall paint will go over well.

Trend Roundup: Just For Fun

When Just for Fun makes its way into a girl’s bedroom, say she’s around eight years old, you might find an explosion of bright pastels, empowering mantras and a jamboree of iconic summer fruits. You might find a storage bin adorned in a rainbow of silkscreened pennants. You might assume, accurately, that this is the kind of girl who knows her way around a Spirograph. You might assume, accurately, that this is not the kind of girl to be trifled with.

Trend Roundup: Just For Fun

Just for Fun makes a nursery feel bright and playful. A splash of tangerine wall paint used as an accent color behind a crib is completely within reason. The geometric silhouettes of building blocks are reimagined as patterns for crib bedding. Astronomy and meteorology are equally represented in a raindrop mobile and solar system banner.

Trend Roundup: Just For Fun

Truly there is no room in your home that, if you’re of a willing disposition, the Just for Fun trend cannot reach. That includes you, Googly-eyed pouf.

Peanut Butter Valentine's Day Panda Chow

Say adios to puppy chow and hello to panda chow! We skipped the traditional Chex and used Peanut Butter Panda Puffs Cereal, and since it already contains peanut butter we got to skip that messy step found in puppy chow. We mixed in festive red, pink and white candy from Oriental Trading, used our best pink scoopers and filled bright pink popcorn boxes to the brim. Once we added an adorable Valentine’s Day note we sent them on their way. There’s nothing like sending a little homemade love out into the universe!

Peanut Butter Valentine's Day Panda Chow

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 Cups Peanut Butter Panda Puffs Cereal
  • 2 Cups White Chocolate Chips
  • 1/2 Cup Red Velvet Cake
  • 2 Tablespoons Crisco
  • 1 Cup Chocolate Candy Assortment
  • 1 Cup Powdered Sugar

Peanut Butter Valentine's Day Panda Chow

DIRECTIONS

  1. Split the cereal evenly into two separate bowls.
  2. Pour the powdered sugar into one bag and the red velvet cake mix into the other.
  3. Melt 1 cup of white chocolate chips with 1 tablespoon of Crisco in the microwave for one minute, mix and pour into the bag of cereal with the powdered sugar; shake to combine. Pour onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and allow to dry.
  4. Melt 1 cup of white chocolate chips with 1 tablespoon of Crisco in the microwave for one minute, mix and pour into the bag of cereal with the red velvet cake mix; shake to combine. Pour onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and allow to dry.

Purple Nursery Inspiration

January 27, 2017

Post by Danielle, Home Stylist on The Land of Nod’s Design Services Team

It’s easy to reach straight for a shade of pink when putting together a baby girl’s nursery. If you want your design to have a more distinct feel, using purple is a great alternative! Taking inspiration from this Peacock Baby Quilt, I played with complimentary hues of purple to create a boho chic nursery for a little girl. The pretty shades of purple mixed in with a touch of mint makes for a unique and serene retreat for baby girl to curl up in. To make the room extra whimsical, try bringing in a wallpaper with similar colors and an interesting pattern. I recommend choosing one wall to feature the wallpaper and balancing the pattern with a soft shade of paint on the other walls. I like Benjamin Moore’s Heaven, which I used in this nursery design. The pale blue tone helps to diversify the color palette and balances the purple rug + pouf so the space isn’t wall-to-wall purple.

No-Bake Chocolate Heart Dipped Cookies

January 26, 2017

Post by Rae Ann Kelly

No-Bake Chocolate Heart Dipped Cookies

We’re less than a month away from Valentine’s Day and while my kids are still trying to decide what kinds of cards, candies and knick-knacks to give their friends, I’ve been trying to plan simple activities to help get us all in the Love Day spirit.

Baking is one of my favorite ways to celebrate any holiday and spend time with my kids, but working in the kitchen with an oven can make it hard for the littler ones to help much. So over the weekend we went the no-bake route and dipped Oreo cookies in chocolate in a heart shape and then covered them in sprinkles. They were a big hit and my little bakers seemed to have a lot of fun in the process too.

So get your sprinkles ready… The no-bake cookie recipe is below!

No-Bake Chocolate Heart Dipped Cookies

YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 package Oreo cookies
  • White backing chocolate
  • Favorite festive sprinkles
  • Wax or parchment paper

No-Bake Chocolate Heart Dipped Cookies

HERE’S HOW:

  1. Line baking sheet or cutting board with wax or parchment paper.
  2. Melt chocolates according to package directions.
  3. Dip cookies in melted chocolate at an angle and on both sides to create a heart like shape. Lay on prepared baking sheet and use a spoon to fill in the edges of chocolate and make more curved. Sprinkle with sprinkles. Repeat until cookies are finished.
  4. Let set for about 20 minutes or until chocolate has hardened… Sticking in the fridge or freezer will speed this step up a bit!
  5. Then eat or package up and share with friends!

No-Bake Chocolate Heart Dipped Cookies

No-Bake Chocolate Heart Dipped Cookies

So simple even the littlest toddler hands can help.

And so yummy, finding help eating them won’t be difficult either. I certainly don’t know anyone that would turn down an Oreo let alone a chocolate and sprinkle dipped one!

Inspiration for Using Gold Accents

January 25, 2017

Post by Danielle, Home Stylist from The Land of Nod’s Design Services Team

Mixing in a variety of textures and tones is a must with any design, no matter what color palette you’re working with. By bringing in metallic accents you’ll add depth and visual interest to the space. If your room could use a little pop of gold, try a few of the these accessories and don’t worry if you already have chrome, brass or copper in the room– it’s absolutely okay to mix different shades of metal.  In this round-up, I’ve selected a few of my go-to accessories that bring in just the right amount of gold to a nursery or big kid’s room. Keep in mind that you don’t want to over do it, so start by choosing 3-4 metallic pieces to incorporate!

Trend Roundup: Staying Neutral

January 24, 2017

Post by Danielle, Home Stylist from The Land of Nod’s Design Services Team

The Staying Neutral trend is an eclectic mix of Modern + Luxe + Bohemian. It’s a combination of bold abstract prints with historical design elements and touches of mod Boho accents. You’ll see a lot of metallic in the gilded materials paired with shades of pink, orange, smoky blue and navy. The vibe feels timeless, designed for the child and the parents. It’s a little bit of everything and makes for easy design transitions as your child grows.

In a nursery, Staying Neutral is all about balance. You’ll want to pair pieces that feel more adult with cute, whimsical prints.  For this little girl’s nursery, the reversible Sandstone Rug and Birch Forest Mural decal bring a modern, bohemian feel and are balanced with sweet bunny details in the bedding, night light and art print. You can introduce texture and metallic touches with the rose gold table lamp and merchant bins. The grey Blake Dresser is a customer favorite due to it’s abundant storage capacity and coordinating changing topper and can be given a customized look by switching out the hardware with the pink ceramic knobs.

Trend Roundup: Staying Neutral

Bring some visual interest to your little boy’s room by mixing funky modern prints with bohemian patterns. Here the Heritage Rug serves as the inspiration with its bold colors and pattern, and is balanced with a larger print wallpaper and a smaller print bedding. The variety of patterns are paired with simple wall décor and the River Blue Wrightwood furniture, a classic shade that will seamlessly transition with the bedroom design as the little guy gets older.

Trend Roundup: Staying Neutral

The Polka Dot bedding is the inspiration for this girl’s room with its super feminine print and color palette. The gold Larkin bed and sunburst mirror add a touch of Luxe and the Woven Sepia bins are an excellent way to incorporate texture. The Wrightwood bookcase is a favorite for just about any space and this new wide option is sure to be a crowd pleaser. The Harmony poster decal offers an abstract modern design to balance out the smaller, busier patterns.

Trend Roundup: Staying Neutral

The great thing about Staying Neutral is that you can mix and match to your heart’s content—mix the old with the new, the abstract with the boho, the luxe with the modern. My advice to you is to start with one pattern and color palette that you’re drawn to, whether it’s wallpaper, bedding or a rug. From there you can start to build the foundation with the other large furniture pieces and bring in different sized patterns and accessories to achieve an intentionally eclectic feel. In the end, if you find that you personally would love to live in the room, you have nailed the Staying Neutral trend.

Broiled Oranges with Honey Yogurt and Granola

January 23, 2017

Post by Giulia, photographer and blogger at Giulia Doyle

Broiled Oranges with Honey Yogurt and Granola

It’s bitter cold around here and that can make our day to day, or even our weekends challenging. There are a lot of layers and waterproof clothing to make it out the door, even if it’s just for a quick run to the park or an after dinner walk to get the jiggles out.

The one thing that is a highlight though in winter is the abundance of citrus. It’s sunny, sweet and fresh and just brightens your day. Rather than just throwing a clementine in your lunch box or drinking a glass of fresh pressed juice, spend an extra 7 minutes on the weekend and make these lovely broiled oranges to accompany your yogurt and granola – trust me, your kids will love it and if you are planning a brunch these will be the star.

Broiled Oranges with Honey Yogurt and Granola

Broiled oranges with honey yogurt and granola

  • Naval and or blood oranges
  • Brown and/or white sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Plain greek yogurt
  • Honey
  • Granola

Heat broiler. Cut ends of oranges so they can stand straight. Cut oranges in half. Put orange halves with cut side up on a rimmed cookie sheet and dab extra liquid with a paper towel. Sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon and ginger and pop into oven on top rack for 7-10 minutes until sugar caramelizes and fruit gets a little puffy. Remove from oven and let cool a little.

While oranges are cooking, arrange your yogurt and drizzle it with a generous amount of honey. Serve broiled oranges with honeyed yogurt and granola.

*You can pre-cut the wedges on the oranges if you wish so they release easier when you eat them. You can also broil these ahead of time and store them in the fridge, they are good served cold as well – easy weekday breakfast right there! Enjoy!

IPS Chips Walking Taco Recipe

IPS Chips Walking Taco Recipe

Putting a healthy spin on some of my favorite meals has become a necessity now that Zelda and I are sharing food. Once she sees me eating something, she immediately wants it, so it’s very important for me to set a healthy example. I came across IPS Chips when I was in the Vitamin Shoppe and was impressed when I read that one ounce of these chips contains as much protein as a single egg! We loaded on our favorite veggies, substituted cottage cheese for sour cream (it cuts out so much fat) and had a blast eating our walking tacos right out of the bag. I cut a hole in the center for Zelda to make it more accessible for her tiny hands. Not into eating out of the bag? Just pour the mix into a bowl, it makes for a delicious salad!

5 Tips for Picky Eaters

January 19, 2017

Post by Lunches + Littles

If you are a parent, you have probably fought a battle (or two!) centered on meal time. Little eaters are often picky eaters, but they don’t have to be. Did you know that simple changes in presentation can often turn boring food into fun food? It’s true! And fun meals can be key to introducing new foods to some of the youngest little foodies. Read on to discover 5 tips that will help you make meals a bit more fun and get your little ones eating better!

1. Invest in Fun (and Quality!) Tableware

This is where it all starts. When a little one is presented with a meal, I believe that they instantly judge what is in front of them based on how it looks. We all do this, but as adults we know that sometimes foods that don’t look appetizing really are, and that things that look really good aren’t always healthy. But, little ones don’t have that same knowledge, so they judge things at face value. This is why I think parents (especially those of picky eaters) need to present food to their little ones in a fun and inviting way. And that starts with the tableware you choose.

Have you ever heard of ezpz? They are the creators of the Happy Mat, Happy Bowl and most recently the Mini Mat. All ezpz products feature an all-in-one placemat plus plate or bowl, made from high quality silicone. The mats suction directly to the table, making it difficult for little ones to tip, lift or toss. Less mess = less stress for parents, and with the bright colors and fun faces you can easily make meals fun for little ones. If you have a picky eater or just want to make mealtime a little more inviting, consider investing in fun, quality tableware such as ezpz products.

2. Get Creative

I have found that a little extra prep time and creativity in the kitchen goes a long way when it is time to eat. If your little one thinks greens are gross, what about spiraling some zucchini into zoodles? (This works well with butternut squash as well; see recipe below). Or, let’s say your picky eater won’t eat carrots, what about making some carrot fries? There are all sorts of ways to make ordinary foods extraordinary without changing the core ingredients. With three little ones (all under 3-years-old!) I have become a bit of magician in the kitchen; I can get my kiddos to choose zoodles over regular pasta every time! And so can you!

3. Use Cookie Cutters

This is such a simple hack, but using cookie cutters can completely change the way a meal looks and get your little ones more interested in the food in front of them. I have a drawer of over 100 cookie cutters, as I pick them up all over the place (often after a holiday in the clearance section!). They are cheap, easy to use, and effective (AND you can find cookie cutters to match any child’s personality or to compliment any holiday)! Take a look at this side-by-side meal comparison below. This is the exact same meal, but which plate do you think that your little one would rather eat? Mine would choose the meal to the right every time. The food is the same, but the presentation is entirely different!

4. Get Your Little Ones Involved in the Mealtime Process

Starting with your grocery trip, try to get your little one involved. I know a lot of parents prefer to shop alone, but I think this is a missed opportunity! Letting your little one help at the store is a great way to encourage healthy habits and teach your children about the foods they eat! Even if you can’t make it work every time you go the store, make an effort to grocery shop with your kiddos as much as possible. And, once at the store, let them be hands on…let them help pick out the brightest carrots, the “coolest” shaped sweet potatoes, the biggest bunches of broccoli, etc. It may seem like a small thing, but when your little one feels like they are part of the process, I have found that they are more excited to see the end result and eat the food!

Our oldest two kiddos (ages 2 and 3) love grocery shopping. In fact, we often bring our own little grocery cart to the store (seriously!) to get them super involved! This takes a little extra planning, time and patience, but having them help select different vegetables, fruits, etc. makes food more fun for them. And, as a bonus, it serves as a great learning opportunity!

Don’t let the help stop after you check out…get your little ones in the kitchen with you when you prep the meal too! Both of my toddlers look forward to helping me prep and cook dinner. Getting your kids in the kitchen is not only another way to bond with your little one; it is also a great way to teach them new skills (mixing, pouring, etc.). I love seeing how proud our kiddos are when they help my husband and/or I prep meals. And when they are proud, they are excited, and often can’t wait to eat what they made.

5. Offer a Variety

Last but not least, when plating a meal for a little one try to ensure that there are a lot of choices. Think about adding different textures and different colors. This is another reason I love ezpz’s Happy Mats. They have 3 separate sections that are the perfect sizes for little ones (see the measurement breakdown of the Happy Mat below). And, if you have a really little one, ezpz now has the Mini Mat, which is designed for infants 4+ months. When it comes to offering variety, be sure to also include appropriate amounts of proteins, vegetables, fruits and carbohydrates. If at all possible, start as young as possible with the introduction of a variety of foods. This is extremely helpful in ensuring that your little one will have a broader palate as they age!

Remember: Making meals fun does not have to be difficult (i.e., messy or stressful); life is messy enough already! If you are a mama (or dad!) of a picky eater, be patient with yourself and your kiddo. You won’t change your little one’s eating habits overnight. But, with a few new additions and perhaps a few changes in presentation, you may surprise yourself with your little one’s clean plate!

Trend Roundup: New Adventure

January 18, 2017

Post by Shawna, Home Stylist from the Land of Nod’s Design Services Team

The New Adventure trend juxtaposes elements of nostalgia, humor, prep and mid-century modern with an outdoorsy feel. It is primary colors with accents of marigold, dusty rose, and rich teal. It’s a daring mix of bold stripes and buffalo checks. It’s playing cops and robbers while picnicking on the lawn. It’s lemonade stands in the summer and ice fishing in the winter. New Adventure plays The Lumineers, Ho Hey loudly on the record player and dances, eyes closed, like nobody’s watching.

In a boy’s bedroom, New Adventure reminds me of the clever little boy called Sam in Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. Inspired by his many (mis)adventures, the Terrace bunk bed feels like the perfect look-out tower for Sam to peek down and survey his landscape. Fascinated by North American birds of any kind, he searches the vibrant Charley Harper-designed Flock of Birds rug with the hope of spotting a new species that has yet to be identified. Wood Arrow shelves proudly display various books of worldly exploration, while the red X Marks the Book Caddy mimics the spot marked for hidden treasures on a map.

The New Adventure girl may only be 9 years old, but she’s had the opportunity to travel the globe. The Fleece Flat Weave rug reminds her of a recent trip to Marrakech, Morocco and the smell of savory, colorful spices displayed in over-flowing stalls at the bustling markets. The Campaign toy box and dresser echo the sounds of The Beatles Abbey Road, constantly playing in her head. The Ikat playhouse brings her fond memories of annual family camping trips to the Ozarks.

If your fingers are crossed for an intelligent Ivy Leaguer with a Tom Sawyer-like sense of adventure, you’ll want to give your New Adventure baby a nursery that playfully combines timeless design, like the Classic Wooden Rocking Chair with the adventurous patterns, like the Gold Dot rug. The whimsical bear decal looking out from behind the midnight blue Topside changing table with rope drawer pulls is sure to evoke amusement and wonder. The Buffalo Check beanbag chair could easily be accessorized with a banana throw pillow to create a reading nook that would surely bring about a case of the giggles.
