DIY Pinecone Pom Pom Ornaments

December 14, 2016

Post by Lauren, Nod’s Fearless Events Marketing Manager

DIY Pinecone pom pom ornaments

Coming up with easy and fun crafts in the winter especially in Chicago is a MUST. I found quite possibly the easiest, and not to mention one of the cutest kids crafts with supplies from my own backyard!  DIY Pinecone pom pom ornaments.

Item’s You Need:

  • Pinecones
  • Small Pom Poms
  • Glue Dots
  • Twine or String

Directions:

  1. First, search out a pine tree and pick out your favorite pine cone. These can easily be purchased as well at a craft store during the holidays.
  2. Next, pick out your favorite color of small pom poms and place them on the pine cone at random.
  3. Lastly tie string around the top of the pinecone to be able to hang it.

Simple as that! Now you have an adorable pinecone ornament to decorate your home with. These could also look great in multiples in a bowl without the string.

When Lauren isn’t planning ridiculously awesome #nodevents for The Land of Nod, she spends her time putting up with the crazy antics of her English Bulldog, Lola. She also loves searching for treasures in vintage stores and summer antique markets. Due to her previous adventure living in Canada, she has a strong obsession to Hudson Bay stripes, as well as the fine cuisine of poutine (Don’t make her choose between the two…that’s like choosing between Ryan Gosling and Jason Bateman for her!).

Feline Noir Nursery

December 13, 2016

Post by Shawna, Home Stylist from the Land of Nod’s Design Services Team

There are two things that get very little “play” when it comes to decorating a nursery.

  1. The color black.
  2. Cats.

What!? But the possibilities are endless, and pretty darn cute too! Simple, geometric lines and shapes, in statement pieces like our Bakersfield Rocking Chair and Baggu Diaper Bag (Moon) juxtaposed with a gallery of interesting cat illustrations and our touch-ably soft Crabby Cat Rug completes this mod nursery theme. I do believe that Audrey Hepburn would be pleased, indeed.

Purple and Mint Nursery

Create a soothing nursery with a chic, gypsy vibe in shades of purple and mint! Purple is such a bold hue, while mint is usually a more subtle shade. To seamlessly combine and soften the look, incorporate shades of grey and hints of metallics. Our woven Charming Baskets and Faux Leather Purple Pouf add a sense of “the well-traveled”, while vintage story book pages give this look a sense of wonderment and adventure. Dance along to Stevie Nicks’ “Gypsy” for extra enchantment.

Holiday Kiddie Mocktail

December 9, 2016

Post Rebecca of Not-So-SAHM

Holiday Kiddie Mocktail

We are HUGE fans of New Year’s Eve in our house and everyone always gets in on the celebration. We’ve done our fair share of kiddie sparkling mocktails, but this year I thought I’d try something different and a little sweeter: Party Cake Floats. A super easy recipe you can adapt to your particular kiddos’ taste and a little something extra for them to cheers in the holiday with you.

Items you’ll need:

  • Party Cake Ice Cream (or try Egg Nog, or Peppermint Ice Cream!)
  • Club Soda or Sparkling Water
  • Edible Confetti Sprinkles
  • Pirouette Cookies

Holiday Kiddie Mocktail

Directions:

  1. Place one or two ice cream scoops in a festive tall glass — it will make the kids feel part of the party and the bubbles look the prettiest when they have somewhere to go.
  2. Have your kiddo help by pouring the club soda or sparkling water over the ice cream and adding the sprinkles to the top.
  3. Place a pirouette cookie in each.
  4. Cheers and enjoy!

Holiday Kiddie Mocktail

Our kiddos were ready to continue the party with The Land of Nod’s Confetti Rockets and Party Blowers. As you can likely tell, just about the only thing we take seriously around our house is partying.

Christmas Chocolate Spoons

December 8, 2016

Christmas Chocolate Spoons

Schedules can get so overloaded around the holidays. Between Christmas shopping, family time and keeping littles from taking all of the ornaments off the tree, it always helps to have an easy dessert recipe in my back pocket. Chocolate Spoons are my go-to when time is of the essence. This three step recipe is always a hit among kids and adults, and little Zelda and I love eating these with a cup of hot cocoa in our other hand. Baker’s chocolate is a must when making chocolate spoons. Don’t try to use another variety, it will turn out lumpy – and who wants to eat lumpy chocolate? No one. What’s your best holiday dessert recipe?

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Bar Baker’s White Chocolate
  • Candy Toppings, such as Christmas Sprinkles, Marshmallows, and Candy Canes

Christmas Chocolate Spoons

DIRECTIONS

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and chop the Baker’s chocolate. Melt it in the microwave on high for 1 minute and then stir to combine.
  2. Dip each spoon in the chocolate and place on the baking sheet; add toppings. Repeat this until the chocolate is gone.
  3. Place in the refrigerator and allow to cool for 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Eat with hot cocoa!

From Inspiration to Nursery Design: Charming Creatures Tiger

December 7, 2016

Post by Danielle Kurtz, Creative Director at The Land of Nod

I just adore this papier-mâché tiger head. It’s based on an illustration by the lovely and talented Sarah Walsh. And, it’s made and painted completely by hand. So each is truly a work of art. With all that craft in one adorable tiger head, I think it’s the perfect inspiration for a nursery design. The color palette is unusual, a modern take on a traditional bright palette. With the introduction of black and white, it’s easy to keep the design looking graphic and bold. Also, I love the geometric patterns used in the design, and was inspired by those repetitive patterns when choosing the items for this nursery design. Modern and playful, the perfect combination.

Play Kitchen Gift Ideas

December 6, 2016

No playroom is complete without an area for kiddos to exercise their imaginations with a little pretend play. Granted, not every home has space for a teepee, playhome, or a complete kitchen set, but a few fun accessories to spark a young imagination can fuel hours in the world of make believe. This is where the Future Foodie play kitchen set is so awesome. Depending on how much space you have in your playroom, you can mix and match the three components to fit your needs. Even the pantry and fridge accessories are irresistibly adorable.

If you’ve got a budding gourmand on your gift-giving list this year, a kitchen play set is definitely a good idea.

Holiday Family Traditions: Festive Kids Room Decor

December 2, 2016

Post By Rebecca Green of Not-So-SAHM

Holiday Family Traditions: Festive Kids Room Decor

I grew up in Chicago where, as many Land of Nod friends can attest, it gets reallllly cold in the winter. So I looked forward every year to my mom pulling out flannel sheets for the bed. But besides the function of the practice, I loved that the sheet change coincided with my mom decorating our bedrooms for the holidays. The flannel sheets were always cute winter wonderland scenes and she added a garland and fun lights above our beds as well. And she continues to do so to this day. I love when I get a chance to take my kids back home for the holidays and I get to tuck them into flannel sheets in my old bedroom, their little sleepy holiday eyes nodding closed under a twinkling set of snowflake lights.

Holiday Family Traditions: Festive Kids Room DecorWe haven’t been able to get back to Chicago the past few years, so this year, I decided to carry on the tradition in our own house. We’ve lived in our home for just a few years so the kids’ rooms are still relatively new (you might remember I posted on the kids’ rooms here and here), but a few simple festive additions really spruced them up for the holidays!

For Cami, I added Candy Forest Flannel sheets to her fabulous Jenny Lind Bed. I think the print paired up so cute with her Ahmaze Quilt too. Want a little tip to make any bed look like a hotel bed? Do a huge fold over of your comforter or quilt with the pattern-side of the sheet and tuck everything in real tight. Like real tight. Instant clean lines for a hotel feel. I also added the cute little forest friend pillow to top it off.

Holiday Family Traditions: Festive Kids Room Decor

I replaced Cam’s regular garlands with a Bright Festive Felt Christmas Garland and a snowflake garland. And I wound a set of twinkle lights through as well. She loved it!

Holiday Family Traditions: Festive Kids Room Decor

Kane has been obsessed with bunny rabbits ever since a whole family showed up in their school garden, so I knew the Bunny Flannel sheets would be perfect for him. And the Holiday Crest Throw Pillow gave him another something soft to curl up for reading (plus the colors look so cute with his Explorer Playhouse). I added some fun lights for him too along with a white felt and Holiday Lights Garland.

Such a fun easy way to continue one of my favorite holiday family traditions!

From Inspiration to Nursery: Star PJ’s

December 1, 2016

Post by Danielle Kurtz, Creative Director at The Land of Nod

An article of clothing or a picture of an outfit can be great inspiration for designing a room. I love how playful these PJs are, but the colorful palette is tempered with a good bit of neutral.  Taking cues for the bright poppy colors balanced by khaki and navy blue, I pulled together a nursery that could work for a girl or boy, and would easily transition to a big kid room. I also took cues from the star motifs and added a few celestial elements to the décor.

Toddler’s First Christmas

November 29, 2016

Post by Danielle Kurtz, Creative Director at The Land of Nod

Toddler's First Christmas

Of course celebrating your first Christmas with a new baby is an important and memorable milestone. But that first Christmas is really about everyone, but baby. On the other hand, when your baby becomes a toddler that’s when the real fun begins. For the first time, they can get in on the fun and traditions.

Toddler's First Christmas

In our house decorating the Christmas tree is one of our favorite family traditions. But, that first Christmas with a toddler, I definitely had to modify my usual game plan. Before having kids my tree was covered in large glass ornaments, painstakingly arranged on my perfectly art-directed tree. Well, as you can imagine, glass, perfectionism and toddlers don’t really mix. And the truth was, I was fine with that. I have a handful of fragile ornaments that mean a great deal to me, those went at the top of the tree. The others were really just pretty things without any meaning or soul, so we traded those for new ornaments that my son and I picked out together.

Toddler's First Christmas

Lucky for me, Nod has tons of adorable ornaments. Many are designed in collaboration with artists. All are beautifully made, AND appeal to the kid in all of us. Plus, they’re all crafted with the intent of being handled by kids. Many are made from felt, wood, wool , metal and papier-mâché. So my son, Nathan, and I took a trip to The Land of Nod and I let him pick out ornaments and garlands that he enjoyed.

Toddler's First Christmas

Then, together we all decorated the tree. There were too many ornaments at the bottom of the tree. Some branches had 3 or 4 ornaments all hung on top of each other.  Other branches were completely neglected. And, when my son and I stepped back and looked at the tree, I have to say, it was perfect.

Modern Football Themed Bedroom

November 28, 2016

Post by PJ of A Girl Named PJ

Hi, it’s PJ from A Girl Named PJ, and I have an important question: What do you do when your child wants his bedroom to be a shrine to his favorite NFL team but you want it to still be a stylish space for him to sleep, work, and play?

That’s the dilemma my best friend recently faced when she decided to redecorate her son’s bedroom for his sixth birthday. Her goal was to give his room a big boy makeover with modern furnishings and decor that could last him into his teens, while her son was pushing for a Buffalo Bills-themed bedroom.

A compromise was in order. My BFF wasn’t interested in investing in excessive team paraphernalia and football-shaped everything that her son might get sick of in a year or two. And I get it. I wouldn’t be either! (Maybe that’s why we’re best friends.)

Luckily, it’s possible to create an NFL-inspired room without going the whole nine yards — or 53.33 yards, if we’re talking about a football field. Since my friend knew she wanted to paint her son’s room (the walls were a toddler-appropriate yellow), she started by browsing official paint colors on Glidden. She wasn’t about to use Midnight Blue or Red on the walls, two of the three team colors of the Buffalo Bills, but Nickel, the third, was a nice and neutral choice. She decided to paint the walls grey and add a few dark blue and red pieces to complement her son’s brown wooden dresser.

Modern Football Themed Bedroom

Of course, not all teams have such conservative colors. The team colors of the Minnesota Vikings, for example, might work better as accents rather than the color of the walls or the furniture. I’m not sure how many young football fans would be thrilled to live in a Dark Gold-painted bedroom, and I’m guessing a Fleshtone or Purple desk or dresser would get real old real fast!

Next, my best friend added a few select football-themed accessories. Playful pennants, pigskin artwork, and posters of players are an easy way to bring on the team spirit, and small shelves are the perfect place for her son’s memorabilia. And when her he turns his attention this spring from the Bills to the Yankees? My friend can hang a baseball print and bring in some bobbleheads to transform the football-inspired room to a baseball-inspired one instead. The best part about her son’s new bedroom is that the furniture and accessories will work no matter what sports or hobbies he decides to pursue down the road. I call that a win-win!

Product Spotlight: Metro Line Train Set

November 23, 2016

Post by Danielle Kurtz, Creative Director at The Land of Nod

Product Spotlight: Metro Line Train SetOne of my favorite products from our Holiday 2016 Gift Collection is definitely the Metro Line Train Set. Not only is it beautiful, it’s also super functional. And, that’s always a win-win when it comes to design for kids. Here are some of the top reasons I’m completely enamored with this set.

First, it features an ultra-cool retro design. It’s kind of retro-future…like a train set Elroy Jetson would play with. Not only that, the colors are crazy good. It’s not your typical primary colors. The palette is sophisticated but still playful, and I love the mixing of patterns on the buildings. This is one train set I wouldn’t mind having hang out on my coffee table…cause let’s face it, isn’t that where all the toys end up?

Product Spotlight: Metro Line Train Set

Next, it’s made using ultra durable wood construction, pinewood and beechwood to be exact. And all the paints are nontoxic. Not only that, I’m obsessed with all the innovative details that were built into this design. First, the trains, tracks and buildings are all compatible with other wood train sets on the market. That means if your little one already have some trains, this set can be added on.

And, like all the toys at Nod, this train set runs on pure imagination. With the city set and tracks, there are endless possibilities to creating any metropolitan rail system your future city planner can dream up.

Spaghetti Squash with Pancetta and Feta

November 22, 2016

Post by Giulia, photographer and blogger at Giulia Doyle

Spaghetti Squash

When the weather starts to cool and we near the holidays I crave warm and comforting food. Squashes and pumpkins fit that bill perfectly and are usually very easy to prepare. Spaghetti squash is a favorite at our house for several reasons – the squash itself is easier to cut in half than other pumpkins and serves up in this fun spaghetti fashion. You can have this as a side to any meal, such as chicken, pork or even turkey. But you can also bulk up regular spaghetti, making it tasty but a lot more healthful – even my picky eater enjoys this.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 spaghetti squash cut in half
  • salt and pepper
  • olive oil
  • 1 cup of cubed pancetta or bacon
  • 1/3 cup of chopped red onion
  • 1/2 cup of crumbled feta

Spaghetti Squash

Directions:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 425F.
  2. Season squash halves and rub with oil, then place face down on rimmed baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 40 minutes or until flesh is soft.
  4. While squash is cooking, gently fry up bacon in a pan and add onions on medium heat. Stir until onions are glossy and soft and bacon slightly crispy. Set aside.
  5. Take out cooked squash and let cool until you can handle it.
  6. With a fork, scrape out flesh – it will look like spaghetti.
  7. Add it to the pan with the bacon and onions and combine well.
  8. Sprinkle with feta and add more seasoning if you wish.
  9. Serve immediately as a side or mix it with a serving of cooked spaghetti.
  10. Enjoy!

Giving Back Advent Calendar

November 21, 2016

Post by Rebecca of Not-So-SAHM

Giving Back Advent Calendar

We celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas at our house, so our kids start to get a little gaga for gifts this time of year. They’ve always begged for an advent calendar, but I haven’t done one before because it seemed like just another influx of gifts. But not doing so always left me feeling a little Grinch’ish — I love how excited the kids are around the holidays!

It’s an ongoing struggle to keep our family on point with the meaning of the holidays, so this year I decided to do something different and create a Giving Back Advent Calendar. With all that’s been going on in the world it now seems even more important — I feel like lots of people could use a little love, encouragement, and hope this holiday season.

Giving Back Advent Calendar

I started out with Nod’s Merry Mod Advent Calendar and filled it with Countdown Calendar Stuffers since I do want the kids to get excited about getting a little something each day on the countdown to Christmas.  I also came up with twenty five little ways our kids can help give back to their family, community, and friends. You can come up with anything that works for your family, but I wrote each of these ideas down on a 1/2 index card and slipped one in each daily pocket of the advent calendar:

  1. Give someone a hug
  2. Tell a joke
  3. Bake for a friend
  4. Make someone smile
  5. Talk to someone new at school
  6. Stand up for someone
  7. Give a teacher a compliment
  8. Donate books you no longer need
  9. Thank a police officer
  10. Leave a letter in a library book
  11. Hold the door for someone
  12. Invite someone new to play
  13. Send a letter to someone
    Giving Back Advent Calendar
  14. Give out high fives
  15. Thank home service providers
  16. Handout happy stickers
  17. Make a Little Loving Hands craft
  18. Smile at everyone you see today
  19. Do an extra chore without being asked
  20. Donate a toy you no longer need
  21. Write a thank you note to someone who has helped you
  22. Send art to Color a Smile
  23. Leave funny post-its around town
  24. Read to someone
  25. Chalk happy messages on public sidewalk

Giving Back Advent Calendar

These are all things our kids can do by themselves or with a little help from me. I hope that it will help them comfort and convey a sense of belonging to others that I think is important any time of the year, but certainly at the holidays. Happy giving back!!

Balloon Rocket DIY

November 18, 2016

Post by MJ of Pars Caeli

Balloon Rocket DIY

Building a rocket can be as simple as blowing up a balloon and letting the air escape. Really, it is rocket science! Balloon rockets are an easy project that can help children understand the basics of rocketry and the laws of motion. From simple party supplies, you can create a balloon vehicle that zooms across a line, propelled by the air that you provide! My children fall in love with learning when we experiment together using simple items, often ones like these that we have around us all the time.

Balloon Rocket DIY

What you’ll need:

  • Balloons
  • 10-15 feet of string: Any kind of smoother twine or string like baker’s twine or kite string.
  • Straws
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • A post from which to tie the string
  • A helper

Balloon Rocket DIYDirections:

  1. Begin by tying one end of your string to a post. This project can be done inside or outside as long as you have open space and a solid post. We chose an arbor in our backyard and tied the string at my son’s height.
  2. Next, with your own air, blow up your balloon. This might be more difficult depending on the shape and size of the balloon. With this squiggle balloon we used a hand pump to help! Be careful not to overfill.
  3. Once the balloon is full, do not tie the end. Hold the end shut between your forefinger and thumb, making sure that no air leaks out.
    Balloon Rocket DIY
  4. Then attach a straw with tape to the balloon. With the clip on the end closest to you, thread the string through the straw and keep it on the end that is not tied to the post.
  5. When you’re ready, hold the string taut and release the balloon! What happens next? The balloon will zoom down the line, often twisting and turning around the string as it moves across the twine.

Balloon Rocket DIY

We tried changing the angle of our zip line as well as the size and shape of balloons. Each factor changed the speed and distance our balloon would travel!! Can you guess what made for the fastest rocket?

How does this work? When the air escapes out of the balloon, it creates a forward push called thrust. The force out (air) in one direction causes a force in the opposite direction (balloon moving forward). This experiment is a simple way to explain Newton’s Third Law of Motion: “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.”

Balloon Rocket DIY

The thrust happens because the air is forced out of the balloon. In real rockets it’s not the air we breathe in but the burning of fuel that creates and maintains the thrust. Engines can blast downward and the rocket propel upward from a constant supply of fuel.

Become a rocket scientist and explore the laws of motion! It can be as simple as releasing a balloon. Happy learning!

From Inspiration to Nursery Design: Bijou Bunny

November 17, 2016

Post by Danielle Kurtz, Creative Director at The Land of Nod

If you ever wanted to design a pretty pastel nursery with an edge, there’s no better inspiration to start with than this fuzzy bunny from Bijou Kitty. She’s equal parts attitude and sweetness.

Aside from being inspired by her color palette, I also pulled in a few fluffy/textured elements like the rug and pom pom mobile that harken back to her furry coat. And, the most important element here is the introduction of touches of black. Just as her sassy face gives the bunny a bit of ‘tude, the black keeps this nursery from going to saccharine.

Easy Teacher Gifts for the Holiday

November 16, 2016

Post by Christina of Christina Williams Blog

Easy Teacher Gifts for the Holiday

I always have the best intentions to spoil my kids’ teachers with beautiful, thoughtful, personalized gifts before school ends in December. In reality, though, I usually end up grabbing something at the last-minute and then feeling disappointed that I didn’t manage my time better or put more effort into it. I’m so happy to have a reason to think about teacher gifts early this year by writing this post!

Teachers are my heroes! When I volunteer at school, I’m always amazed by the heaps of patience they have with such large groups of kids. And I can see a huge progression in the students throughout the year. They really work so hard with our kids, and the holidays are a great time to show them how much you appreciate all their hard work.

Easy Teacher Gifts for the Holiday

For this post, I actually did some super-scientific research to find out what REAL teachers REALLY want for Christmas. OK, so my research wasn’t very scientific at all. I just texted some teacher friends to ask what their favorite gifts are. They provided me with some great feedback–as well as some do’s and don’ts for teacher gifts. The thing at the top of the teacher’s lists were items they can use in the classroom. I’ve usually avoided gifting school supplies to school teachers, because I worried that they might want a change of pace. But every teacher I spoke with mentioned how much they appreciate things they can use at school.

Easy Teacher Gifts for the Holiday

One teacher specifically mentioned that she loves receiving cute things she wouldn’t normally buy for herself: fun stickers or stamps, cute desk supplies, or fun grading pens would be a big hit!

Easy Teacher Gifts for the Holiday

Another suggested that gift cards are always welcome: even just a $5 gift card is so helpful! Another popular suggestion was new books for the classroom library. It’s always such a treat to have new reading materials!
