5 Last Minute Halloween Ideas

October 30, 2017

Halloween is tomorrow, but don’t worry; you can still bring an impressive treat to a Halloween class party, or plan a little Halloween-day-of fun for you and your little ones at home! See below for 5 last minute Halloween ideas.

1 Candy Coated Eyeball Cookies

What you need: OREO Cookies + 1 Bag of Candy Melts (I used purple, Wilton brand) + Assorted Sprinkles + Candy Eyeballs

How to make them: Melt candy melts according to package instructions. Then, dip one side of each cookie in the candy; letting excess drip off. Place on a piece of parchment paper. Push one candy on top of each cookie. Then, immediately sprinkle with sprinkles. Repeat until finished with however many cookies you want to make. Dry, then store or serve!

These are so fun, easy and portable. Best for taking with you to a fun Halloween get together, school classroom party, etc.

2 Zombie Brains Macaroni and Cheese

What you need: Macaroni and Cheese (I used @annieshomegrown Organic Classic Macaroni and Cheese) + Fresh Broccoli (1 head of broccoli per 1 box of macaroni)

How to make them: Prepare macaroni and cheese as detailed on the package. While macaroni is cooking, steam chopped broccoli. Once steamed, run under cool water, then shake off as much excess water as possible. Then, using a food processor or blender, fine chop/blend the broccoli until it reaches a fine consistency. *I kept a handful of florets to the side, for topping at the end (optional). Once the macaroni and cheese is fully cooked, transfer broccoli into the same pot as the macaroni. Stir until broccoli and macaroni are well blended. Add salt and pepper to taste. Serve and enjoy!

This is a great Halloween day side (or try adding in some chicken to make it a main dish)! Green is fun and spooky for Halloween, so get in those green veggies while it is still fun to do so!

3 Frankenstein Grape Cups

What you need: Clear Plastic Cups + Black Sharpie Marker + Marshmallows + Green Grapes + *Black Construction Paper + Scissors + Tape (optional)

How to make them: Cut a marshmallow in half, then “stick” halves to the inside of your cup (for your eyes). Then, with your marker draw eyes, mouth, and other features as desired to complete the Frankenstein fun. Fill cups with green grapes (half or quarter grapes if preparing these for younger children). Then, if desired, cut a thin, long strip of construction paper with one side being a zig-zag pattern as shown in the picture above (right). Then place around the top of cup/ top of Frankenstein’s head to create hair. Tape to secure.

These little cups are a fun way to serve fruit! If you get clear cups with lids these are also great for transporting to a Halloween event or even packing in a Halloween themed school lunchbox.

4 Pretzel Witch Finger

What you need: Pretzel Rods + 1 Bag of Candy Melts (I used dark green, Wilton brand) + Sliced Almonds + Toothpicks

How to make them: Melt candy melts according to package instructions. Then, dip half, or a little more than half, of each pretzel rod in the candy; letting the excess drip off. Place coated pretzel on a piece of parchment paper and then immediately push an almond slice at the tip of the pretzel for the fingernail. Use a toothpick to create markings for joints by making indents into the chocolate. Let dry, then store or serve!

5 Mini Mummy Meat Loaves

What you need: Meatloaf prepped in cupcake liners + mash potatoes for piping + peas

How to make them: Find my full recipe right here.

These are a great option for a fun Halloween dinner. Quick, easy and can even be prepped a bit in advance. These are so mummy-yummy and are sure to be loved by your whole family!

Arts & Crafts Inspired Blue Boys Bedroom

October 27, 2017

The Art + Craft trend layers all things organic and natural with the dramatic and modern. It balances bold patterns of geology, flora and fauna with soft neutral tones and Scandinavian design. This trend is heavily influenced by bright Mexican embroidery and pastel desert landscapes.

Art + Craft in a boy’s bedroom is all about layers of texture, embroidered patterns, and natural elements. The Ace + Jig Boho Blue Rug is balanced with the neutral, grey wide stripe duvet. An accent wall in Benjamin Moore’s Serene Breeze shade of green or a cactus print wallpaper makes a dramatic statement and pairs well with furniture in natural wood tones and the seagrass hamper. Mix in wall art like the blue woven wall hanging that has texture and moody shades with the mountain banner.

Easy & Healthy Toddler Snacks

October 25, 2017

When it comes to toddler snack time, we can get in the habit of thinking that the only “snacks” that our little ones will eat are those character-themed, sugary ones you find down the grocery aisles. But add a little color, some dip, and fun shapes, and you may be surprised at all the healthy, fresh options your little ones will eat up. Below I am sharing 5 easy & healthy toddler snacks that are as yummy as they are simple! Pair snack time with some art/craft time to take the pressure away from finishing their snacks (this has worked so well in our home!) and let your littles create a masterpiece in the process!

1 RAW VEGETABLES WITH DIP

It doesn’t get much easier than this one. If you have a little one who enjoys raw veggies, set their delicious, nutritious veggies out with a dip as a quick and easy snack. Our babes love carrots and celery with ranch or almond butter, so this is a go-to snack in our home (but if your little ones aren’t loving vegetables raw yet, that’s okay!). You can also try offering up veggies in small portions paired with a food they already love, like cheese, nuts or crackers. Sometimes the simple tip of pairing veggies with an already loved favorite can really help a child eat up – and even try new things!

And if that doesn’t work, that is okay too. Try offering your little ones a bowl with a fruit and vegetable mixed together. Or, pick up a healthy veggie chip. We love Peas Please from @peeledsnacks. Don’t tire from offering, exposure is key!

2 CHEESE

Cheese sticks, cubes and/or slices are great toddler-friendly snacks and the protein that cheese offers can often help your little ones stay energized and full until their next meal. Make cheese more fun for kids by cutting it into fun shapes with mini cookie cutters, like the stars shown above. So simple, yet so effective!

3 YOGURT AND/ OR COTTAGE CHEESE

Yogurt and cottage cheese are a few other great and easy snack options for little ones. These options contain calcium, protein and other nutrients that your children need. Cottage cheese is also very versatile; add in some fruit or even some vegetables, like diced carrots or peas, for a fun “confetti cottage cheese.” If your child is dairy-free, you can always check out dairy-free options of yogurt, etc. at most retailers. Coconut yogurt alternative is a great option our babes love.

4 WHOLE GRAIN OR MULTI-GRAIN WAFFLES W/ TOPPINGS

Whole grain or multi-grain waffles with cream cheese, fruit and/or other toppings are a great little snack, and it is healthier than many other options out there (and easy too!). We just take a couple of store-bought waffles, toast them, and then cut them up into fun waffle sticks. So easy… from freezer to table in 3 minutes!

5 PROTEIN BALLS

Quick and easy protein balls (sometimes called energy balls or energy bites) are a fun snack option, and they are perfect for snacks at home, on-the-go or even in a school lunchbox. There are many different ways to make protein balls depending on your needs. If you (or your school) are nut free, these Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Protein Balls are perfect because they use sunflower seed butter instead of traditional peanut butter. They are always a hit in our home, and pack a healthy punch!

I grew up loving Care Bears, and last month The Land of Nod launched their new #CareBearsforNod collection. And, oh my, did this launch bring back memories for me! Were you a Care Bears kid growing up? If you were, or even if you weren’t, there are so many adorable and fun Care Bears items in this collection. A few of our favorites include: Cheer Bear Stuffed Animal Funshine Bear Sleeping Bag, and the new Care Bears Happy Mats and Happy Bowls.

Like all ezpz products, these special edition Care Bears Mats and Bowls feature an all-in-one placemat plus plate or bowl, made from high-quality silicone. The mats suction directly to the table or highchair tray, making it difficult for little ones to tip, lift or toss. Less mess equals less stress for parents, and with the bright colors and fun Care Bears faces these are sure to brighten up any mealtime, or snack time! If you have a picky eater or just want to make meals at the table a little more inviting, try out these adorable mats and trays!

How to Expose Your Children to Healthy Foods

October 20, 2017

Are you a parent of a picky eater? If you are, you know that the struggle is definitely real! Picky eating, or the refusal to try new foods (and the desire to eat the same foods over and over again), usually peaks in the toddler and pre-school years but can begin as early as self-feeding. For parents, it can be frustrating when our little ones start becoming picky. How do we help them and, in turn, help ourselves?

I’m not an expert in feeding or nutrition, but I am a Mama of three little ones, ages 18 months, 3 years and 4 years old, and even though I run a food-focused feed (with an emphasis on healthy toddler and family food) I still know what it’s like to have a picky eater… or two. I also happen to have a great Feeding Expert friend, Dawn Winkelmann M.S, CCC-SLP (Speech Language Pathologist & Feeding Expert for ezpz, Spectrum Speech & Feeding, The Baby Guy NYC and Guidance Guide) who lives and breathes this topic, so let’s talk about it…

“Most toddlers go through a normal picky eating phase called food neophobia, where they are afraid of unfamiliar foods. I tell parents to remember my four tips (TAFT-Time, Age, Five, Therapy) when they are worried about their toddler’s selective eating habits. A child’s food neophobia phase should: last a short Time, decrease with Age, be willing to try new foods by Five, and parents should seek feeding Therapy if the child has not reached these milestones. Feeding therapy should be performed by a qualified Speech Language Pathologist or Occupational Therapist who specializes in pediatric feeding and swallowing.” – Dawn Winkelmann

If you are a parent of a picky eater, you are definitely not alone. As Dawn shared above, most toddlers go through this phase. Below are 3 methods on how to combat their pickiness!

3 Ways to Expose Your Children
to More Healthy Foods

1 GIVE THEM CHOICES

As soon as little ones are able to choose, they want to choose. So, give them choices! I always offer our babes multiple foods during a meal and, when it comes to vegetables and even some fruits, I have found that offering more options (in smaller servings) has helped. For example, if we are going to have green beans, I know that my daughter does not like to eat those so I will offer her a half portion of beans and a half portion of another vegetable that I know she is more comfortable with.

Dawn adds, I encourage parents to offer at least 3 foods
during mealtime (instead of just a bowl of cereal or a bowl of mac & cheese) and to avoid giving more than 5 foods – too many choices can be overwhelming. However, offering a variety of samples during “snack time” for food exploration is an important technique when kids are learning about the sensory properties of new foods!”

Personally, I also like to extend the choices even before the meal starts (starting at the grocery store and then during meal prep). I often talk with my 3 and 4-year-olds about what they would like for dinner and what the sides should be. I never leave these kinds of questions open-ended; I always give two concrete choices and let them choose. For example, “Would you rather have salad or broccoli with dinner tonight?” Truth is, they may not be too excited about either, but I have found that the more stake they have in this process, the more willing they are to eat. So go ahead; empower your picky eaters with choices!

Also, don’t be discouraged if your little one doesn’t eat up what you offer after one or two offerings. As parents, we typically only give a food a couple meals worth of rejection and then stop serving it. I admittedly did this a lot with our first born but then I learned that it can often take ten to fifteen times of offering and tasting something before a little one will be willing to accept and eat a new food. So, instead of replacing foods, now we add in new ones and continue to rotate the ones that weren’t loved right away. It can get tiresome but keep on offering and be patient. In this area (like most!), persistence pays off!

2 INCORPORATE FOOD IN PLAY

Ever since our children could play, we have encouraged open-ended, imaginative play in our home. One specific area of pretend play we have encouraged has been centered on play kitchens, kitchen food, feeding (e.g., feeding baby dolls, etc.), and so on. I believe that this kind of play has helped get our little ones excited about mealtimes and exposed/ familiarized them with new foods. A great, space-saving play kitchen option that our kids all love is the new Hape Play Kitchen (shown in these photos) available now at The Land of Nod.

Investing in open-ended toys that allow your children to learn about different foods and model cutting, cooking and eating are all very helpful in developing useful skills. To get started, some great options include Hape Chef’s Choice Play Food Set, Hape Garden Salad Play Food Set, and the Hape Cutting Fresh Fruit. Our oldest also loves the Hape Play Baking Mixer Set. He loves to pretend to mix just like me, and will often tell me he is working on one of his “famous recipes.” Our 3 and 4-year- olds can name all sorts of fruits and vegetables, some of which we don’t eat regularly, simply because they “play cook” with them. They get to know different foods (even different appliances!) through this kind of play.

You can also incorporate food puzzles and books that include vegetables (like this funny one: “Vegetables in Underwear”). And, remember, playing with your food doesn’t have to stay in the playroom! Let your little ones literally play with their food by feeling, touching and exploring the food. Yes, this is messy, but this kind of explorative, hands-on play can help a child feel more comfortable when they go to taste and eat.

Dawn Winkelmann further adds, “It is important to teach your
child how to explore food, and pre-teaching (or practicing) through play is technique feeding therapists use! You can incorporate this strategy when playing with pretend food, as it helps prepare your child for mealtimes with family, play dates with friends and problem solve complicated eating situations (like table manners, using utensils and cleaning up). Pre-teaching is a technique I often use with children who are hesitant eaters, as it helps them feel more comfortable and confident at the dinner table.”

3 MAKE MEALS FUN!

While this may not work for every child or family, in our home, I decided early on that I was going to work at making our mealtimes more fun, and I honestly have seen this improve mealtime successes. Parents regularly message me after seeing something on my feed, and they’ll ask, “Do your kids really eat THAT <referring to whatever that is>?” While they do not always clear their plates, all three of our children eat very well (though it has been quite a process for 2 of 3 of our kids!). Making meals fun doesn’t have to be difficult or cost a lot of money or take a lot of time.

As an example, I regularly incorporate dips, sauces, cookie cutters and color in our meals. I say this all the time, but we all eat with our eyes first, and I want to prep meals that are visually appealing – even for my littlest ones! It isn’t hard to cut a sandwich into a star or heart or add color to a plate (mother nature has some of the most vibrant colors out there), and sometimes just these subtle changes can help get your little ones more willing to eat up the healthy stuff.

Parenting is hard, and sometimes the dining room table can be one of the most dreaded places to be with a toddler (I have been there!). And, getting our little ones to eat healthy can seem like an impossible task. But, I promise you, it isn’t! With a little creativity and determination, you can successfully expose your children to healthier foods and win the meal time battle. Arts & Crafts Inspired Girls Room

October 18, 2017

The Art + Craft trend layers all things organic and natural with the dramatic and modern. It balances bold patterns of geology, flora and fauna with soft neutral tones and Scandinavian design. This trend is heavily influenced by bright Mexican embroidery and pastel desert landscapes.

In a girl’s bedroom, the Desert Flora bedding is a standout item from the Art + Craft inspired collection. The pastel print on the bedding is soft and feminine and pairs well with the Southwestern Blue curtains to bring in an additional punch of pattern and bold color. To balance out the patterns, the solid Light Blue Viscose rug is used along with a soft shade of Benjamin Moore’s Mellow Pink on the walls. Different textures are incorporated with a metal feather mirror, the Touch of Gold table lamp and woven cat basket. A combination of garland and art prints with shades from the color palette complete the look.

Mealtime Lessons With ezpz Care Bears Mats

October 17, 2017

The ezpz Care Bears Mats will surely make your little one eager for mealtime with their friendly facial compartments that encourage adventurous new meal options. Compartments remind parents to serve a fruit or veggie, protein, and carbohydrate, while the nose is perfect for dips! And, don’t forget the ezpz Care Bears Bowls, they’re tailored for infants, travel, and nostalgic parents.

Care Bears Mealtime Lessons

Mealtime Lesson: Have fun at mealtime!

Nothing makes Funshine happier than going on adventures, and he makes the most of his days with fearlessness and sunny optimism.

Making food fun is critical to success with a picky eater. Using fun feeding products like the ezpz Care Bear Mats and adding cookie cutters, lollipop sticks, and candy eyes will help your child become fearless with food!

Mealtime Lesson: Wishful thinking can lead to eating!

Wish Bear helps make wishes come true, and although they don’t always come true, making wishes and trying your best is still fun.

Finding a few foods your child is interested in trying (even if they are not your favorite choices) and exploring them together can be a wish come true for a hesitant eater! When we encourage kids to have a positive + wishful outlook at mealtime, we may be surprised by all the foods they are willing to try.

Mealtime Lesson: Share family meals!

Share Bear is a nurturing and generous bear, and she is happiest when she’s giving or baking.

Trying new foods together as a family will influence what your children eat. The phrase “sharing is caring” is especially true around the dinner table. But this goes BOTH ways. Your little one may be more willing to try broccoli if you are ready to eat a few bites of his dino-nugget!

Arts & Crafts Inspired Nursery

October 13, 2017

The Art + Craft trend layers all things organic and natural with the dramatic and modern. It balances bold patterns of geology, flora and fauna with soft neutral tones and Scandinavian design. This trend is heavily influenced by bright Mexican embroidery and pastel desert landscapes.

The Baja Garden bedding inspired this Art + Craft nursery for a baby girl, using contrasting shades of pastels with bolder reds and blue. The crocheted round rug adds a soft natural layer. The walls are decorated with a variety of felt flower garland, a modern cuckoo clock and the farm yard print. A shade from the bedding works best on the walls, like Benjamin Moore’s Barely Teal.

Treats in a Tray Halloween Gift

October 12, 2017

Need a quick and easy hostess gift?  What about a gift for school staff or neighbors? Try treats in a tray Halloween gift is perfect!

Treats in a Tray Halloween Gift

SUPPLIES:

  • Mini cupcake/muffin tin.
    • These tins can be found at most dollar or general stores!
  • Printed napkins or tissue paper.
    • I used napkins as I found them easier to work with.
  • Small giftable items – think mini candles, toys, and sweets!
    • Really, anything small enough to fit in the tin would work.
  • Baker’s twine

DIRECTIONS:

  1. To make these I simply wrapped up small candies inside printed napkins and arranged them in a mini cupcake/muffin tin.
  2. After wrapping each candy, I tied them using bakers twine, but, if you are pressed for time (or feeling a bit lazy like me), instead of wrapping each treat, just set each piece of candy on top of a napkin square or cupcake liner.  It still looks festive!

Treats in a Tray Halloween Gift

I made these as a countdown to Halloween by including a handwritten note that said, “A treat a day for you to countdown to  HALLOWEEN!”  We happen to have an extra special school nurse who just LOVES chocolate, so when there are 12 days left until Halloween she’ll find this gift waiting in her office!

But, even though I made these specifically for Halloween, you could easily recreate for any holiday!  Just change out the napkins. Think Christmas!!  These could be a 12 day, advent-style calendar using toys and delicacies.

ENJOY this season!

4 Tips for Styling Shelves

October 5, 2017

Organizing your shelves into a display that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing is a common design challenge, especially when toys and other kiddo paraphernalia are involved. Whether the shelves in your kid’s room are empty or have way too many things crammed on them, achieving a balanced look is not an impossible task. Here are a few helpful go-to tips for creating an intentional, collected style for your shelves.

1. Variety in height.

Try to avoid having items at the same height by stacking some books vertically and others horizontally. To keep it balanced, space taller pieces out and fill in with smaller toys and accessories. Try placing a small toy or photo frame on top of the horizontally stacked books.

2. Play with the depth.

Have some items towards the back of the shelf, like a framed print leaning on the wall, and some closer to the front, like a small toy or succulent.

3. Personalize it.

Among the cute toys and accessories, add a sentimental item such as a family photo, a print with their name or letter with their first initial.

4. Don’t overdo it.

Leave breathing room around some of the pieces on the shelf—it will start to look cluttered if completely filled. If you have larger, deeper shelves, use a few bins at the bottom and focus on styling just the top shelves.

Here are a few examples of accessories and toys that can be used to style your kiddo’s shelves.

DIY Kids Halloween Party Decor Craft

October 4, 2017

I’m always looking for fun treats this time of year!  To go along with all the traditional goodies, I thought it would be neat to get the kids involved and decorate mini water bottles!  We will be taking these to class parties, handing them out on Halloween night and keeping them on hand for all the neighborhood festivities.  With all the delicious candy and cute toys on hand, I thought a refreshing “treat” might be a welcome surprise!

Modern Blue Nursery Inspiration

October 3, 2017

For this modern blue nursery inspiration, the color palette came from the Heritage Rug, with its vibrant blue tone and smaller orange and green accents. For some added pattern play, a blue herringbone wallpaper is used as an accent wall and brings an extra dose of visual interest to the design.

The maple Andersen Crib and Danish Modern bookcase have muted natural wood tones that provide a clean balance to the colorful blues, oranges, and greens used in the bedding and decor. More texture is incorporated with the Sepia floor bin and faux leather pouf to give the room an eclectic, layered feel.

Cozy Up Your Home for Fall

September 28, 2017

Post by Rachel, Nod’s Brand Marketing Manager

Here in Chicago, the weather is (finally) chilly and we’re ready to cozy up with apple cider and our kids on the couch. As we’re bringing out our fall sweaters and boots, we’re also prepping our homes for cozy nights.

Creating a welcoming and warm home only takes adding a few comfy elements throughout your home.

  • Mixing textures (think layering a fluffy rug on top of a cotton one) creates a cozy environment.
  • Add throw blankets to couches and beds for extra warmth.
  • Swap out throw pillows and add anything plaid, cushy and festive.
  • And in your bedrooms, swap out cotton sheets for flannel sheets. There’s nothing like hopping into a warm bed on a cool night.

Ever wonder who’s behind The Land of Nod social media accounts? That’s Rachel! When she’s not telling anyone who will listen that she’s not meant to live in cold, snowy Chicago, you will find Rachel hanging out with her husband and new baby, binge-watching Netflix after baby’s bedtime. Or starting crafting projects that never get finished.

Seaside Nursery

September 27, 2017

The Land of Nod’s Design Services Team recently had the pleasure of designing a seaside nursery for a military family that travels a lot. The mommy-to-be is originally from the Jersey Shore and really wanted the nursery to reflect the fond memories of her childhood.

A rug that reminds her of sand between her toes, lighting the color of ocean sky, and playful art that reflects memories of family walks down the boardwalk. Subtle pops of pink, like in our strapping hamper, are key and add a touch of femininity and sweetness to this nursery design and keep the room airy and fresh.

Bringing a beachy vibe to your coral nursery design can be a fun way to celebrate the nesting stage of welcoming your new baby.

A pop of coral wallpaper paired with a coral Campaign dresser is the perfect complement to pale blue wall paint and aqua décor. Add a touch of warmth using gold finishes. The Gold Standard Wall Shelf and Gold Tabletop Touch Lamp are perfect accent pieces to complete the look.

Ocean Themed Shared Bedroom

September 19, 2017

Adding space for a new baby to a big kid’s room can be tricky—you want both areas to have décor that reflects each child’s age and style, with a cohesive feel.

My biggest piece of advice to achieve this goal is to pick a color palette that works for both children and use bedding and accessories to tie it together. For this ocean themed shared boys bedroom design, shades of blue complemented by pops of teal and a variety of neutral tones unify the two spaces and gives the room a serene and polished look.

Art Buffet Kids Craft Station

September 15, 2017

Art Buffet Kids Craft Station

I’m always in search of fun and exciting ways to encourage my kiddos to be creative.  One of the easiest ways I’ve found to engage them creatively is to move their art supplies to non- traditional spaces.  We might sculpt in the kitchen or paint in the bathtub. Just being in a fresh environment brings on such creativity.

Recently I set up this art buffet kids craft station in our back yard.  Instead of an array of foods, I set up a feast for my artists!  The environment wasn’t necessarily unique, but having access to all our materials outside brought out a newfound passion.  My girls spent an entire evening just making and creating.  Clean up was the only hard part, but it was totally worth it to have such a spread!

Here’s what I included on our buffet table:

  • A base for their creations: foam sheets, construction paper, felt
  • Lots of color options: paint, markers, our favorite beeswax crayons
  • Adhesives: glue and tape
  • Tons of fun dazzle:  glitter, pom poms, bright tissue squares, colorful office stickers
  • Scissors and punches

So next time your kids need a creative boost, try an art buffet!!!  It could be a mini buffet in a far away location or huge spread on your kitchen counter! HAVE FUN!

Navy Nursery Inspiration

September 14, 2017

Choosing a deep navy hue as the primary tone for a girl’s nursery design can offer an exciting opportunity to explore a unique combination of complementary colors and patterns. See below for some navy nursery inspiration!

Bold scalloped wallpaper acts as the primary statement for the design with supporting hues through the room decor. Warm rosy hues balance out the cooler blues and achieve a sense of homeostasis in the design. I love the textured floral details in the Floral Rush crib quilt and velvety softness of the cheeky Hello throw pillow.

For the larger pieces in the room, neutral greys, whites, and wood tones keep the room soft and could easily be repurposed down the road in a second nursery with a completely different color scheme.

Happy Styling!

DIY Outdoor Reading Lounge

September 13, 2017

The hot D.C. weather finally seems to have made a little turn as summer starts to come to an end. August was so miserable that it was hard to really enjoy outdoor time, so I was excited to finally set up a reading lounge for the kids on our back deck. I’d had it planned all summer, but it was too hot and buggy. Plus, I thought it would be fun to entice the kids to amp up reading time now that school is starting back up.

We already have an outdoor couch with several Nod pillows, but the kids constantly jockey for space on it (so does our doggy Penny!). So I added a few more comfortable spots to curl up. First up, I added a great indoor/outdoor rug. These are knit and super easy to pick up and move indoors if you need to.

Cam loves poufs, so I knew she’d love to perch on one to read. The Squared Up Step Stool serves as the perfect side table for our books too.

No lounge area would be complete without extra throw pillows—the Penny pillow fits particularly well given our pup and our kids’ love of presidents (hey, we live in D.C.!). Boom. Instant reading lounge!
