Maple Brown Butter Popcorn Recipe

We recently discovered that you can make popcorn in the microwave with two things: popcorn kernels and a brown paper bag.  You know, the kind you pack your lunch in.  Here’s an article about it on The Kitchn because of course, they are such a great, practical resource for all things culinary.

We also found a recipe for honey brown butter popcorn but changed it up a little based on ingredients that we had in our pantry.  Thus, maple brown butter popcorn was born.  Here’s our (very simple) recipe for maple brown butter popcorn, inspired by The Kitchn’s recipe.

You’ll Need:

  • 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels (or microwavable popcorn)
  • 1/4 cup of unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup of maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt

Directions:

  1. Use 1/2 cup of kernels to make approximately 10 cups of popcorn in the microwave. If you prefer, you can make it in the air popper or use your favorite brand of packaged plain microwave popcorn.
  2. Brown 1/4 cup of unsalted butter in a small pan.  If it’s your first time, here’s a tutorial.
  3. Take the pan off the heat and whisk in 1/4 cup of maple syrup (or a little less if you want to reduce the sweetness) and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.
  4. Drizzle the liquid over the bowl of popcorn and toss/stir until the popcorn is coated well.

And because crunchy snacks and movies seem to go hand in hand, that’s what our maple brown butter popcorn ended up being used for: movie night.  Cheers to winding down!
