The Story

Modern and restrained in form, expressive and rustic in glaze. The artisan's hand is authentically reproduced in this stoneware pattern designed exclusively for Crate and Barrel by ceramic artist and designer Kathy Erteman at her 18th Street studio in New York City. A contemporary matte black exterior contrasts the rustic beauty of a shiny, speckled white glazed interior ringed with the subtly raised spiral associated with hand-thrown pieces. A raised clay rim features a sandy glaze that evokes the feel of exposed terra cotta. To capture the artisan look of this dinnerware, Erteman modeled prototypes to true scale by hand with her original glazes as reference for production. In the words of the designer, "When making tableware, I consider design and the rigors of daily use. The spirit of my hand in these pieces is modest, to harmonize with and act as a support to the prepared ingredients."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 18th street dinnerware I initially received these plates as a gift and LOVED them so much that I went online and purchased 8 more dinner plates as well as the entire set of salad plates and bowls. This dinnerware has a great weight and the contrast of the dark bottom with the light face makes them really POP when they are set against my cherrywood table. The bowls are great for pasta and ice cream sundaes with let's just say ...about 3 scoops of ice cream). They are very dishwasher friendly and stack well in my cabinets.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really pretty, looks like Heath ceramics Bought these last month because they resemble the Heath plates I love but can't afford. These were a good value and are really pretty. They have a good weight to them. Only downside is I have cracked 2 plates already in my sink. Big bummer! My fault, I'm sure.
