This exclusive collaboration is our first with Brooklyn-based industrial designer Olivia Barry who attributes her inspiration as an artist to two influential women in her life. Mentored in the love of clay and glazes as a young girl by her grandmother, Barry has also had the rare opportunity since 1998 to work side by side as assistant to the legendary mid-century ceramist Eva Zeisel (Classic Century Dinnerware) of whom she says, "Eva's sense of joy and humor is visible in her work, and I have been fortunate to be a part of that process." The Spool design's creamy English earthenware shapes feature distinctive carved rims inspired by the natural lyrical patterns drawn in sand dunes by the shifting desert winds. The play of light and shadow on the surface frames the culinary center of attention with a festive energy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Boobois from spool dinnerwareWe've had these dinnerware for about two years and used them on a daily basis. We love the design--elegant yet casual, and look great with a variety of dishes. However, the bowls look aged with cracks in the glaze. We never washed them in dishwasher or used them in microwave, so I think the cracks were caused by serving hot soup.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Pamela from Beautiful dishes - a couple issuesMy husband and I received these dishes through our wedding registry. After spotting them in the store, I knew these dishes were perfect for us. Unfortunately, we discovered after using them that they crack very easily. Apparently they cannot be exposed to high heat. We found the bowls to be the most susceptible to cracking. Living in an older apartment, we don't have control over the dishwasher temperature, so we are now forced to hand-wash our bowls. We had about 6 bowls that had cracked so badly we brought them back to the store to exchange them for new ones, which Crate & Barrel was really great about. After reading more recent reviews posted here, it looks like they may also be cracking due to the microwave heat. While we receive many compliments on our dishes, they are much more delicate than I anticipated. Also, the size of the dishes are larger than most, so make sure you check out the dimensions before purchasing. All in all, I would purchase these dishes again because of the beautiful color and spiral design, but I do wish Crate & Barrel would do a better job of specifying how you have to care for these dishes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Carolin from Spool - not impressedI was given these dishes as a housewarming gift a year ago and feel they do not live up to everyday living needs. They chip very easily, are not suitable for a microwave unless you set the power level to low and I have noticed cracks and discolouring in the glaze.

Rated 4 out of 5 by bc244 from Great design, odd dimensionsReceived this as a wedding gift. Love the design and flexibility. Can be used for formal or casual dinners. My only complaint is that the plates are a bit oddly sized. The salad and dinner plates are both bigger than normal, which makes it a bit difficult sometimes to use them in the correct situation. For example, most of the time we just use the salad plate as our main dinner plate, but it's a bit small for that purpose. On the other hand, the dinner plates are a bit too large. Ideally, both plate sizes would've been a bit smaller!

Rated 2 out of 5 by caseer from Not the biggest fan :(We registered at Crate & Barrel for our wedding chose the spool dinnerware for our everyday dishes. I absolutely LOVE the look of the set. They are interesting enough on their own but also neutral enough to be able to be mixed with other designs. The color allows for us to swap out chargers, placemates, table runners, etc and still have a nice match. What I don't love is how they hold up! Within the first year, you could already see significant crazing in the finish resluting in tiny looking cracks. For the most part it's okay on the plates. It's not visually appealing, but is doesn't hinder their fuction. Also, within a year, I had to replace a few of the bowls and a mug or two. The bowls chipped rather easily around the edges at the point of crazing and two of the mugs split right down the side! We do use the dishes daily and wash in the dishwasher, but they are supposed to be "dishwasher safe". Neither my husband or I use the mugs for daily coffee or tea (in fact they have probably only been used a dozen times) and we still saw significant damage to the mugs!Sadly, after a year and a half of marriage, I'm already looking at replacing our dishes that I was so excited to get in the first place. If these are going to be your dishes for certain special occasions, I say go ahead and get them. If you're thinking of using them daily, I would recommend choosing another option :(

Rated 3 out of 5 by IrishBaritone from All cracked upMy wife and I registered for this line of dinnerware because we loved the look and feel. Being young and in love, we didn't really consider the size. The dinner plate did end up being a little larger than normal, but we have managed to fit them into the cabinets without hassle. The crackling issue is the big negative. I guess I need a fancier dishwasher that has a "low temperature" setting or to hand wash (?!?!) each individually. And what about hot coffee/tea for the mugs? How do you avoid that? IMHO, and I'm no pottery expert, but I think they just need more glaze or something. We also found that they break quite easily...when a stack of these plates fall off the table onto the floor. OK, that was our fault, I guess. ;)We are torn. We love the style/color/shape. Don't love the crack-ability of the finish. Not sure yet if we are going to keep replacing or move on to another brand.

Rated 2 out of 5 by mcguish from Beautiful, but too fragileMy husband and I registered for these dishes and I think they are beautiful. But... they didn't fit in our cabinets and started to get hairline cracks after just a couple uses. I thought the cracks were part of the "look" until they started absorbing the color of the food they came in contact with. After I got a big red line down the middle of my serving bowl from a beet/arugula salad, I knew I had to return them. C&B was amazing with the return, as always. I'm still sad I couldn't keep them,, but I knew they wouldn't last very long.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spool DinnerwareAbsolutely love my new dishes! They are beautiful and can be used as casual or formal....because it is a beige/neutral color...you can put any color theme with it. I was a little disappointed in the cup as the hole for your fingers are a little smaller than my other cups, but just takes getting use to! All in all, beautiful set of dishes....I ordered 8 place settings and getting ready to order another 4 place settings to give me 12! I also ordered the side pieces and LOVE the FRUIT BOWL!!!!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by Annie Hall from So close but...I fell in love with these dishes. I wanted something plain that I could make look fancy or casual for a meal in our newly redecorated dining room. Having read the reviews, I bought a tester set which did fine in the dishwasher. But when I washed the 2 sets my mom sent as a Christmas gift, many of the plates developed crazing (first time in!). I was so disappointed. The C+B manager said this was the "look" for this china, but not what I was hoping for. The store was very good about the return. Still I loved the pattern so much I have kept the serving pieces which I plan to hand wash.
