The Story

Dakota's dramatic sweep of European white oak pales in modern shades of grey, setting an organic, elegantly understated tone for the dining room. Undulating, soft curves sanded smooth follow the tree's profile, exposing natural wood tones. "Fuming," a technique which reacts with the wood's natural tannins to alter the color without stain, produces the subtle grey tones. The base of the bench complements the seat's organic nature with one built-up leg at each end. The Dakota 71" Bench is a Crate and Barrel exclusive.

Dakota 71 Bench is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple & Elegant We purchased the Dakota dining bench without the table and use it in our front entry under a custom mirror of similar color. The overall result is simple and elegant. The quality of the bench is great. As all are individual, we found that the color of our bench is slightly darker than the one in our local Crate and Barrel store. Still it is beautiful. I have no regrets with this purchase and would buy it again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Design problem Soon after this 71" bench was delivered, we noticed that every time we sat on it, the bench would make a cracking noise and wobbled a bit. The person sitting in the middle would feel a slight sag. So I called Crate & Barrel to discuss the issue. The sales lady thought this could be fixed with some minor adjustments and sent a furniture guy to fix it. Apparently nothing could be tightened or fixed. It is a design issue. If the bench legs were placed closer together, they would have provided more strength and better support to the mid section. I finally decided to return it in exchange for the shorter version. The 51" version looks and feels more balanced. Crate & Barrel should consider placing the legs of the 71" bench closer together to yield better support to the whole bench. I would recommend the 51" bench but not the 71" version.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful bench! Love the bench - it goes great with the table. We originally bought the 76 inch table and the shorter bench, but returned for the 71 inch bench. The shorter bench would have been fine for people sitting between the table legs, but there would have been a lot of unused space at the ends. One star missing because the wood shows wear & tear - but I knew it would. Love the rustic / modern combo!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bench When I bought the Dakota table I also bought one bench, but not to use only for seating. It also makes a great coffee table in a narrow room. When I need extra seating, I can always move it over to a table.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Love these benches- They compliment this table in a big way- couldn't imagine the table without the matching benches. They slide on our bamboo floors without any scratching and sit flush to the ground. The colors mimic the table perfectly. The edging on the benches is smooth- making it very comfortable to sit on.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Tilts/rocks easily We have had this bench for almost a year. It looks great and complements the Dakota dining table, but after using it all this time, I must say I'm disappointed in the design. The top is about 17" wide, while the legs are only 9.5" wide. This means that changing your position slightly while sitting on the bench will cause it to start tilting. This is an issue even when there are other people sitting on the bench. The top piece is also very heavy, which makes the bench even less stable. In summary, the bench looks great but isn't very practical.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from inconsisten quality purchased 2 benches. 1 is fine. other has rough edges that were not properly sanded and left 1 inch cut on 6 year old sliding off the bench.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great purchase I bought one Dakota bench for a landing on the second floor of my home. It fits perfectly and looks elegant. Lovely color and I receive many compliments on the style of the bench.Only downside -- had to return the first bench because I was told I could put it together myself and the hardware that came with it was the wrong size. On the second try, all went well. Love the bench!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the bench I bought this to co ordinate with the Dakota dining table we bought about a year ago for a mud room area that opens into dr. It looks great and pulls the look together without looking too 'matchy'! Love the modern rustic style. Have the Miles chairs at the table to soften look.
