There's something special about bellying up to the bar to socialize or have a meal perched a little higher atop a bar stool. Whether you are looking for a seat at the bar, kitchen counter or a counter height high dining table for your home or restaurant, we can help you arrive at the right barstool for your needs. But first, learn more about what to look for in the Crate and Barrel collection of backless, adjustable and swivel bar stools for your counter, kitchen island, bar or outdoor patio. Once you know what you need, you'll be sitting pretty.

Seat Height: What Height Bar Stool Do You Need?

The first thing you need to determine is what height bar stool you need for the surface it will be pulled up to. Measure the distance from floor to top of surface where seating will be used. Counter height bar stools, also called 24-inch barstools from floor to top of seat, are perfect for kitchen counters, counter height tables and kitchen islands that are about 36 inches high. Tall bar stools—or 30-inch barstools from floor to top of seat—are sized for higher tables and bars around 42 inches high.

Seat Type: Fixed, Swivel or Adjustable

Next, depending on where the bar stool will be used, determine if the seat should be fixed, adjustable or swivel. Fixed seats work when primarily used facing forward into the kitchen island, counter, counter height table or bar. A swivel seat allows you to easily turn toward other activity in the room, such as the dining table, big screen TV in the family room, or pool table action in the game room, without moving the stool itself. Adjustable seats go a step further, taking you from dining table up to counter, or kitchen counter breakfast bar up to high bar height for even more versatile seating possibilities.

With Back or Backless

Bar stools with backs provide more security and support, while backless stools take up less space and stow handily under the counter, high table or bar. Backless stools can be mounted from many directions. Some swivel, are adjustable, or both. When you need back support with a low profile or smaller vertical footprint, a low back is a great choice. Stools with arms take comfort to the next level by providing a place to rest your arms.

Material and Color

Sturdy metal bar stools are easy to maintain and can work in a host of modern, industrial, vintage or rustic style settings. Contrast them with wood for a collected look. Wooden bar stools add contemporary warmth and contrast to stone or metal finishes. Upholstered and leather bar stools add both sophistication and comfort. Optional cushions add comfort to unupholstered seats when and where you need it most. Outdoor barstools are built to withstand the elements. White styles add brightness and light, while classic black or even green, purple and red bar stools make a pop-of-color statement.

Add a Crate and Barrel bar stool to your dining furniture collection to suit your style—modern or industrial, contemporary or rustic. Shop our wide selection in a range of styles, materials and colors, and show us how they worked out by posting your photo using the hashtag #CrateStyle.
