Bathroom Makeover: A Step-by-Step Guide
Christiann Koepke shares 5 easy ways to give your bathroom a makeover. Shower curtains, towels and decor make a statement.
The New Year is a perfect time to refresh your home. You don’t need to tackle every room. One will do. I recommend starting with the bathroom because it is so easy to transform. Updating a space that you use every day, also provides instant gratification. Here are 5 simple steps to create a new look and feel for your bathroom.
Step I – Clean: Make this a truly fresh start by going through all of the drawers and cabinets in your bathroom. You know those bottles and tubes that have been sitting there for longer than you can remember? Yes, those. Toss them and any other products or make up you aren’t using regularly. Know that it is okay to have an empty drawer. Next, gather up all your old towels and washcloths. Donate them to an organization that helps people in need.
Step II – Dream: This is the fun part. Now that your bathroom is clean and ready to be made over, you get to think and explore colors that make you happy. Revisit some of your favorite vacation photos, explore a Crate & Barrel store, and/or take a walk outside. Looking for inspiration in real life should be done before you settle in on the couch to check out Instagram and Pinterest. The goal is to identify two to three colors. I went with a natural look that reminded me of sand on a beach.
Step III – Shower Curtain: A shower curtain, a rug (more than one if your bathroom is large), and towels are what I call anchor items. Start with the shower curtain because is the largest piece in your bathroom. You can go with a design that incorporates one -or- all of your colors. A multicolored design is an opportunity to add some pattern to your space.
I chose the Izet Honeycomb Shower Curtain. It’s a great in-between for those of you who love neutral earth tones and patterns. And if perchance you can’t find the perfect multicolored shower curtain that fits your color scheme, don’t worry. Your rug and towels can help here.
Towels & Rugs
Step IV – Towels & Rugs: White towels are classic, which is why I love them. Hand towels don’t have to be the same color as the towels and washcloths. Matching your rug and hand towels can create a cool and eclectic look. I recommend these luxurious Turkish Cotton 800-Gram Blush Bath Towels. These towels come in several colors, including Plum (C&B ‘s new favorite color… which completely has my “yes”) and even Spa Blue! After you have your towels figured out, any rug you desire can be found at Crate & Barrel. They have gorgeous solid, multi-color, AND reversible rugs that come in many different colors.
Decor & Display
Step V – Décor & Display: This step puts the finishing touches on your new bathroom. Display your towels and favorite products on this Banya White Bath Tower. You cleaned out those drawers for a reason. The items in this rich honey colored collection will provide everything you need to display the products you use daily. A set of glass canisters is also a great place for your cotton balls, Q-tips, and soap.
The final touch will be mirrors. They bring more light to a bathroom with a window –and- help create light when you don’t have windows. You cannot go wrong with extra mirrors – they’re the best solution for all spaces. A Contrell Round Brass Mirror or this glass vanity tray are perfect on a counter.
You can now enjoy your new bathroom. Don’t forget to send your photos!
