Ask a Wedding Planner: Should I Postpone My Wedding?

Weddings are meant to be a joyful time in your life, yet we know that many of you are concerned with how current government guidelines could impact your event. As we are all caring for our communities and one another, we reached out to Shannon Gail from Shannon Gail Events in Chicago, the brains behind some of our special Private Registry Events, to share some thoughts on how to get through this together. She offered a 5-step plan for navigating your important wedding planning decisions. We hope you find it helpful.

1) Take a moment to pause

First and foremost, join me in taking a collective deep breath. I understand this is a quickly-evolving, unprecedented, and stressful time. However, please take comfort in that we are truly all in this together, and all of the professionals you have hired to be a part of your event team are here to assist and advise you.

2) Focus on the facts

Regarding any possible disruption in your wedding plans, I urge you to focus on the current federal and state mandates, rather than any rumors, media, or outside chatter. It's important to gather all information to understand if you may need to consider postponement.

3) Execute a plan

If your wedding date does not currently fall into the immediate regulations, my best advice is to hang tight. The climate and regulations are changing daily and sometimes hourly, and I think it's important to monitor the happenings of the next few weeks before jumping to any impulse decisions. I understand this may be hard, but we are advising our late May and June clients to sit tight for the next week or so before we execute a plan.

4) Hold off on any immediate communication

In the meantime, it might be best to hold off on any communicative planning, and by that I mean, it may not be the best time to send your Save the Dates or Invitations. I would give this the same two week period as outlined above before making a decision on whether postponing the wedding is the right choice.

5) Reach out to wedding professionals

And finally, if you still have concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to your team of wedding professionals, especially your planner if you have one. We are here to help you! We have been spending the last week or so absorbing as much information as possible so that we can provide you with concise, accurate information as well as working to understand any postponement and contract policies from our network of vendors to ensure any decision you may be confronted with is fully informed.
