Homemade Sushi Date Night
Oh, date night. The never ending question of “Where should we go?” and “What do you feel like?”. I can tell you what I feel like these days—staying at home in my pajamas to cuddle up on the couch! Which is why lately, we’ve been doing just that. Instead of going out when we’re exhausted, my guy and I been having more fun staying home and cooking up something together.
While one might be interested in the art of making pasta, or perfecting the perfect pizza crust, not us. Sushi is my weakness and my most favorite dish to go out for, so I decided we should try making it at home!
Setting the Table
First—we set the scene with a simple table for two. I happened to find some beautiful cherry blossoms that were perfect for the mood! Especially in a vase that’s beautiful with or without flowers in it. As someone who is all about the presentation of food on a plate, I don’t like my settings to be too fussy, so I love the simple texture of these dishes for adding something a little more interesting to the table that doesn’t upstage the dish being served.
DIY Sushi Tips: Next, it’s on to the DIY sushi-making! I learned that the key to cutting the perfect sashimi (besides really quality fish, of course) is a long, extremely sharp knife. We literally sat and watched how-to videos before conquering the task of slicing the fish, him holding my iPhone as I gave it my best effort. Lemme tell you, people—the knife makes all the difference!
And then we did it all over again! Yes, I totally screwed up the first homemade sushi roll. But was it more entertaining than dinner in a restaurant? Definitely.
Digging In
When it was time to enjoy the fruits of our labor, we poured the sake and dove right in! One of my favorite parts of setting the table is finding ways to repurpose items in the house, and this wood board that we typically use for charcuterie was perfect for our pickled ginger instead! And the DIY sushi was almost as good as our favorite restaurant. I think I’d call this one a date night success!
