Jada Moore is a multihyphenate stylist, designer and influencer who’s made a name for herself with her bespoke nursery and kid bedroom designs. But her favorite title so far? Mom! So when her tweenage daughter Sophie was ready for a room redo to reflect her style and boost her confidence, she was excited for the ultimate mother-daughter collaboration. Here, the celebrated designer shares her tween girl bedroom ideas to create a space that will be loved for years to come.
Things that inspire and develop self-confidence, like the artwork above Sophie’s Canyon Natural Desk, was the driving force behind the tween’s room redesign.
Remember why you started.
The quote “Hello Beautiful” was the inspiration for this redesign. My daughter is a preteen and these can be some of the hardest years for young girls to find self-confidence and appreciate what makes them different. I designed a room where everywhere she looked reminded her of her beauty—on the inside and outside!
Jada and Sophie worked as a team to pick pieces that would grow with her, like the timeless Black Wide Thornhill Dresser and a nubby neutral Pantherette Rug.
Parent vs. tween: Who leads the design?
With a tween design, I follow the 60/40 rule: 60 percent tween and 40 percent parent to help them space-plan and bring everything together. I selected my top Crate & Kids picks, and then, Sophie selected the ones she really loved. It’s also about picking your battles (lol!) and understanding why they want certain items they are selecting.
Jada elevated the tween bedroom with our Canyon Arched Full Black Canopy Bed and Black Wide Thornhill Dresser.
When picking out products, play the long game.
Longevity is most important when designing and selecting pieces. I believe in designing kid and tween spaces that will grow with them. I love the tween furniture collection at Crate & Kids, like the Canyon Arched Black Canopy Bed and Black Wide Thornhill Dresser because the designs speak to a preteen as well as being cool enough for true teenagers.
Cane detailing and a curved design gives our Canyon Natural Desk style that will last for years to come.
Pick one for a tween bedroom: comfort, style or functionality
I would definitely pick functionality! This is such a special time as they transition into teenagers. So transitional pieces are key—from transforming her desk into a game station or pivoting a nightstand into a painting table.
Sleek, sheltering and a dash of whimsy make our Canyon Arched Full Black Canopy Bed feel like a fairy tale.
New room = new confidence!
During this design process, my daughter was in the throes of tween body issues. But this room was a game changer: It completely boosted her self-confidence! During her virtual lessons, classmates say, “Wow, Sophie! Look at your bed—your room is so pretty!” That made her feel so good. She finally felt seen! She went from not wanting her camera on to now having her camera on! The new room helped Sophie celebrate herself, from the gorgeous furniture to the photos she took. She told me it’s like waking up in her own hotel every day!
