Nice sofa--but have cleaner handy
I ordered this sofa in white because it was the only in stock color I liked. It's my first white sofa (really a slightly off white ivory) and I was immediately conscious of the fact that a white sofa in daily use would be a challenge. The Petrie sofa has a code "S" fabric, meaning you should not clean it with water, but with special cleaner that is rated for "S" fabrics. Basically, this means you are going to need dry cleaning fluid for spot cleaning (when food falls on it or drinks). The salesperson person mentioned the fabric is stain resistant--but keep in mind that doesn't mean much with a white sofa. Anyway, a friend of mind dropped some of his pizza right on the cushion. After blotting the stain with the dry cleaning fluid and a white towel for awhile the stain is barely detectable. However, I had to work pretty hard -- so I'm not sure about that stain resistance.
However, even without an accidental spill, the sofa is getting dingy overall with daily use -- even though everyone that sits on it has clean clothes. Keep in mind this is after only a month and a half of use. If you get the sofa in this color, you'll need to get it professionally cleaned at least once a year to keep it looking decent. That will run you about $150.
Although I love the look of this sofa, I can't suggest getting it in a light color if you are going to use it a lot. I think the darker fabric or leather is the way to go.

Just don't sit on it
A year after owning the Petrie Sofa, the white pillows are showing a grey-blue discoloration where people sit. We called Crate & Barrell and were told that it's from people wearing jeans, which has stunned us since all our jeans have been washed dozens of times. When buying the sofa in white we were told it is stain resistant and easy to clean. In addition to the discoloration, one of the pillows has a seam that is coming open. We rarely use the sofa because it's in the formal living room, and are surprised how fast it is showing signs of wear and tear even when it's hardly in use. It's a pretty sofa, just don't sit on it.

Not a review, but a question
Dear C&B: please answer me!
All over the internet purchasers of the Petrie complain about the same things: the buttons poking, the buttons falling off and the cushions not standing up to even a minimal test of time.
I wish C&B would ADDRESS these concerns with a design change and/or some commentary.
The ONLY reason I have not purchased this sofa is due to those consistent complaints I have read on your site and other sites discussing sofas.
It's gorgeous, but sofas are like spouses - you kinda need to know they are going to be around and you will still like them for a lot of years.

Wonderful couch
I bought this couch about 2 years ago and was a little worried about buying a white couch. I have a white persian cat who's eyes drip constantly and sleeps on the couch. I wipe it with water and it comes right off. Also has been great with milk and even popsicles. I love this couch and so does everyone who sits on it. Also when I got it there was a small flaw and Crate and Barrel said that the new cushion might not match and replaced the whole couch. I go to Crate and Barrel often and love all of my purchases and service.

In the movie "Smurfs"
Bought this sofa when I moved to a condo in the historic district of Richmond, VA. It fits right in with my style-modern yet classic. My decor is black and white with lime and orange accents. Sofa works great! The biggest drawback is the cleaning products of the sofa needs to be purchased on-line. Fortunately, My sofa is still pretty clean, but I haven't gotten around to ordering the cleaning (not water) products.
I recently took my Granddaughter to see "Smurfs" and the sofa is in the movie in a cute Manhattan apartment.

I absoulutaly love this quality of this coach. The lines are clean and interesting. This contemporary sofa would fit nicely with any decor.

A Classic!
It's sleek, clean and surprisingly comfortable -- exactly as promised. I got the full-sized white sofa, and so far it's been stain free. I love it!

Good sofa
Nice and comfortable. We have the white which will get dirty pretty easy, but not terrible to clean w/ Capture. Get a nice table to put your feet on and sit back and relax. Nice length for three people comfortably or to lay down on it for a nap.

durable, stylish couch
this couch is a great buy - not too expensive, very durable, and so stylish! I've had it for about 5 years and it's still in good shape. My only gripe over the years is that the cushions eventually loose some of their padding so the buttons become a bit uncomfortable to sit on. Still, it's the best couch I've ever bought.

Uncomfortable & a dirt magnet
I've had this sofa for 2 years now and I hate it. Like other reviewers, I have problems with the cushions and the buttons making sitting on the couch totally uncomfortable. This started within 2 months of getting the couch. Additionally, the weave on the couch makes it a dirt magnet. I can't seem to get it clean. I know this couch is gorgeous -- but I beg you not to buy this couch. It's just not worth it.

Flat Cushions buttons poke you
I have had this couch for 2 years. the style is great and it looked good, but the cushions flattened and poke me in the butt. It is really uncomfortable!

OK sofa but not for every day
I have Petrie sofa in white for approximately 3 years. The sofa is well made and has held up with time, however, the first 2 years we lived in a big house and this sofa was occupying a room, but we have not used it often. Since we moved and made this our main sofa, I started being disappointed with it. When you sit on this sofa, the buttons start really poking you in the butt, and it is uncomfortable. It still looks really nice and we are being careful around it, but it is showing discomfort with regular use.
This sofa is great for looks, but that's about it... buy yourself something comfy so you can kick back, relax, maybe fall asleep... buy yourself a regular sofa -there are plenty out there... then you can buy some original art for your room and you'll have style without sacrificing comfort.

Poor quality couch
I bought this couch from Crate and Barrel expecting a very high quality item. I've had this couch for just over two months and already the stitching is coming out of one of the cushions. I sit on the couch every day, but I am not a big person. I weight 135 pounds and there is no reason the cushion should be coming apart already. Had I known this might happen I would not have bought the couch.
Crate and Barrel is sending someone to fix it, but I thought this would be a couch I could have for years without issues. I'm very disappointed.

i hate this couch
We've had our Petrie for about two years now and I hate this couch. This is our second Petrie. The first one we received, the cushions didn't have enough stuffing causing the buttons to stick out whenever you sat down for any length of time. This would become uncomfortable very quickly. Even after you got up, the cushions wouldn't "bounce back" to its original fullness, so the button would just kinda lay there on its side completely sticking out. I can't tell you how often I was tempted to just cut them off. So one day while the wife and I were shopping at Crate and Barrel picking out our bedroom set, I casually mentioned the problems we were having with the cushions. The salesman was kind enough to exchange the couch for us even though we had it for about 3 weeks.
The new couch's cushions were much fuller than the first couch. The buttons didn't stick out at first but.... we still had the same problems after a few weeks. I chalk it up to the buttons not being taut enough or the cushions not full enough. I may cut off these buttons and just be done with it.
After about 2 years of ownership with the new couch, I've been experiencing back problems like never before. The cushions squish down flat as a pancake except the very sides of the couch where the armrests are. This creates an uneven seat. There doesn't seem to be any support whatsoever from the seat and the back cushions anymore. It would probably be more comfortable sitting on the floor against the wall than sitting on this couch cause then at least there wouldn't be any buttons sticking up into your butt. Buttons are popping up everywhere. I hate the buttons.
i cannot recommend not getting this couch enough. I hate this couch. HATE HATE HATE. I feel like I've wasted 1500 dollars on a couch that barely lasted two years.

Love my Petrie
It is not easy to find a couch that hubby and I both love. I love how beautiful and stylish it is and hubby finds it amazingly comfortable. He loves it so much that he even let me get a white one. :-)

We purchased the Petrie sofa and chair in white (snow) and love both! IThey're really modern and clean looking, but also very comfortable.

I Love My Couch
Not only is this sofa very stylish and versatile for a variety of design aesthetics and palettes, but it is INCREDIBLY comfortable, well-made, and stain resistant. In my first week of owning this sofa, I had an overnight guest sleep on it (happily) and spill olive tapenade on it (which all came out). I cannot be happier with the Petrie. It is stylish, but liveable, comfortable, but modern. It's almost impossible to find a stylish sofa that is also functional, and if you're in that boat, look no further than the Petrie.

Our Favourite Piece
We bought the Petrie sofa in the light blue and we love it. It is a statement piece that is beautiful and comfortable. Not to mention very well made. We get compliments on it from pretty much everyone that sees it.
