Modern and restrained in form, expressive and rustic in glaze. The artisan's hand is authentically reproduced in this stoneware pattern designed exclusively for Crate and Barrel by ceramic artist and designer Kathy Erteman at her 18th Street studio in New York City. A contemporary matte black exterior contrasts the rustic beauty of a shiny, speckled white glazed interior ringed with the subtly raised spiral associated with hand-thrown pieces. A raised clay rim features a sandy glaze that evokes the feel of exposed terra cotta. To capture the artisan look of this dinnerware, Erteman modeled prototypes to true scale by hand with her original glazes as reference for production. In the words of the designer, "When making tableware, I consider design and the rigors of daily use. The spirit of my hand in these pieces is modest, to harmonize with and act as a support to the prepared ingredients."

United States

Describing herself as a modernist with minimalist leanings, Kathy Erteman is a New York-based ceramic artist and designer. She is known for objects that are simple in form with lively surface detail and color. Drawing inspiration from early 20th-century European design and a pared-down Asian aesthetic, she imagines her work being in homes “where art and design dissolve into function with personal style.”

Erteman received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University, Long Beach. Upon graduation, she interned with Judy Chicago, renowned for her “Dinner Party” installation. Erteman went on to develop her own body of celebrated work, exhibiting internationally with objects in private and public collections, including the Renwick Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Currently a teacher at Greenwich House Pottery, Erteman recently received a Nwang Choephel Professional Fellows Cultural Exchange Fulbright award in partnership with Aid to Artisans to work with Tibetan potters in Yunnan, China.

18th Street 16-Piece Dinnerware Set is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 69.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Sadly breaking in microwave in less than a year My wife and I received these as a wedding shower gift about 10 months ago. We really like the whole set but unfortunately we have had 1 bowls, 2 mugs, and 2 small plates and 1 big plate that have broken after microwave use over the last few months. They are often breaking clean through the middle splitting them in half. The sets look nice and we like them but unfortunately are losing pieces fast

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous, Sturdy and practical We love this set and use it everyday. We have not had any problems with chipping that others have mentioned. It is super stylish, and affordable, and goes perfectly in our brand new home. Thank you!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Chips quickly; not microwavable Crate&Barrel is aware that this product is defective. It chips and breaks quickly. It does not tolerate microwave. Crate&Barrel should remove it from their product line.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from My Dream Set This set has been great when having people over for brunch or a late night dinner. The large plate provide ample space to spread your courses and not have them all jammed up.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing, break even with gentle use I received this set as a wedding present and it hasn't even lasted a year. 1 tea cup handle came unglued within a few weeks. Another cup split in half when I poured hot water for tea into it. Another started leaking from the bottom after a few weeks. One of the plates split in half when I microwaved it, even though it clearly says the dishes are microwave safe. What is the point of having dishes that last less than a year that are this expensive? I would NEVER put them in the over because mine can't even handle 190 degree hot water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Looking, Sturdy and Versatile A well rounded, sturdy and good looking collection of dinnerware that works casually and formally in my mid-century and modern pad. Also, they are a more affordable option than handcrafted pottery elsewhere. Love them!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice but chip easily I really like the look of these plates but you have to be careful as the sides will chip really easily.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Loved them but they chip I received these plates as part of my wedding registry. We waited a year to put them our after we did a kitchen renovation. Unfortunately, very quickly the plates and bowls all started chipping. The edges then expose the clay. There are only so many you can get replaced before you care. Very upsetting...I guess this happens it just happened quickly.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Owned 3 mos - Poor Product I was gifted eight dinner plates and loved the look of them. So shortly after I purchased 8 bowls and 8 appetizer plates. Since then I have already had to replaced 3 Bowls & 2 dinner plates: The Two other dinner plates have chipped leaving a jagged edge rendering the plate useless. And a 3rd dinner plate has a hair line crack through the entire plate and I'm waiting for it to just break in half. Not to mention these plates/bowls get unbearably HOT upon microwaving and I'm guessing based on other reviews that the hair line crack may have been the result of microwave or dishwasher heat. I'm a big soup eater so I've learned to heat my soup up in a coffee mug instead of these bowls. If I had to do it again, I would not buy these 18th street plates/bowls. I'm actually going to retire the set from use and buy a set that is more durable and heat friendly.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from After 2.5 years My original review was right after I had purchased them. Then there was minor flaws in each piece but I looked past all that. Now two and a half years later I can give another review. Like many reviews state, I've had several of my plates crack in the microwave and MANY of them chip in the dishwasher oddly enough. The coffee cups have held up great, though the black starts to get a bit cloudy over time. The bowls, which I thought I would love the shape of, really is just an odd shape for anything. But nonetheless would I recommend this? Probably not, I'd suggest something else only because of how many of my plates have cracked and chipped now. I didn't expect this to last forever, but I certainly didn't think after only a couple years would I have these issues.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, Minimalist set We received this simple but elegant full dining set for our wedding, and it is exactly as described. Crate & Barrel enabled us to have a long-lasting and elegant dining set for an affordable price to our family, without skimping on aesthetic. We can't wait to use our set for our 1st Thanksgiving!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pieces crack in microwave and dishwasher I have had this set for just under 3 years and have had four salad or dinner plates develop cracks in the microwave or dishwasher. Most recently, a plate cracked spontaneously (with a loud pop!) just from having microwaved food set on it - the plate itself was not even in the microwave! So disappointing, because I love the look of this set, but I am NOT willing to hand wash my everyday dinnerware. I have never had stoneware that was fragile like this before. Will never buy dinnerware from C&B again.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Beautiful but poorly made! We got these as a Christmas gift a couple of year ago and have taken very good care of these items. Within the first year the plates began cracking and chipping. One plate even broke in half after use in the microwave. Love the design but will never purchase this line again! Very disappointed since these were very expensive.
