Rated 1 out of 5 by from Looks good but takes forever to season. We bought this months ago and it still isn't seasoned. We still see parts of the stone in the food. It's big and holds a lot but if you want to use it right away go foe a different one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bigger than in Mexico!! I purchased this for a wedding gift (it was on my cousin's wedding registry) and I HAD to purchase one for myself as soon as I saw how large it was!! My grandmother gave me hers and I've had it for years, but the one from Crate&Barrel is not only larger and deeper (it holds more) but it's very well made and the quality of this product is above the rest!! Be sure to SEASON it several times with rice and salt and it will last you a lifetime!! I've grounded my own spices in mine and I also use it to make a fantastic garlic paste!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it Makes making guacamole so easy! We got this as a wedding gift and have used it every time we have had friends over. It is a bit hard to clean and the initial seasoning process took some time but was worth it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Maravilloso! I bought this for my husband's birthday and although it took us a month to season it (we could only crush the salt for a short time!) it was worth the effort! The easiest way to clean it is with salt, just as you would a cast iron pan. It is very heavy, but beautiful!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Traditional Lava Mortar and Pestle! Very happy with this traditional molcajete. The price is reasonable and the quality is good. Prefer it to the granite molcajete. The guacomole is so good. There is never any leftovers!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Guacamole This was the best Christmas present ever! We love to cook and Mexican Dishes are some of our favorite. Guacamole is so easy to make with the Molcaiete. The ingredients are able to be blended without distroying the taste or the texture.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from If you love fresh guacamole I bought this a few months ago after watching one used on The Chew. First the cons, it is quite heavy, it does take a lot of work initially to wear down the grit and season the bowl (we took turns with our kids grinding the rice), if you are making a lot of guacamole (3+ avocados) you need to make it in batches and I end up using a scrub brush to get the nooks and crevices thoroughly clean since using soap would destroy the built up seasoning. All that said, it does a wonderful job of infusing the avocados with just the right amount of garlic, cumin etc. to make amazing fresh guacamole. Most things worth having take work, so if you don't mind a little extra work to have exceptional guacamole don't be put off by the "cons".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for mexican cooking Bought this after taking a cooking class in Mexico. Although seasoning the bowl is time consuming it is well worth it for the authentic experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makes the best guacamole Because the bowl and pestle aren't completely smooth, you get really nice guacamole with some chunks in it. The crushing action I think releases the flavor of things like cilantro and jalapeno much better than cutting. It does take forever to "season" though, and you will build some serious arm muscles. We did it according to the instructions (ground dry rice into it about 4 or 5 times until we basically had powder, and there weren't any jagged edges or pieces of rock coming off in the rice, then ground rock salt into it 2 or 3 times, then ground some hard seasonings like cumin into it for added flavor). It is also hard to clean--we use a brush (no soap) and hot water, sometimes soaking it for awhile first.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Real Deal Been looking for one of these for some time. It is exactly like the one my mom used when we were growing up. Love it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little guacamole maker My friend purchased this for me because I love all things guacamole. In theory, this is a fun little thing to have.I do find that it's easier to make the guacamole in another container and just use this for serving. This thing is REALLY heavy so other items are a bit easier to maneuver. The only thing I don' like about this is the cleaning. It's not dishwasher safe and you can't use regular detergents. It's sort of like owning a cast iron pan in terms of its care.
