idea 1: start by asking yourself this question

“Where do you like to go on vacation?” This wasn’t something I was expecting my design pro to ask, but it was a genius place to start because the best outdoor spaces make you feel like you’re miles away from home. My answer revealed that I was looking for a very relaxed, rooftop meadow vibe that felt like an oasis in the city. Ask yourself this at the start of your project, too. Then collect images of your favorite destination and go-to hotel there so you have a reference point when putting together a look of your own.

idea 2: nail your sofa and coffee table combo

The first thing we did after deciding on an aesthetic was pick out anchor pieces like a sofa and coffee table that fit the vibe. You want to make sure you get furniture made from durable and sustainable hardwoods like FSC®-certified teak or eucalyptus because they won’t crack or warp. My design pro also taught me that an outdoor sectional paired with a rectangular coffee table is perfect if you entertain and need extra seating plus room for appetizers or drinks. But if you have kids, my design pro said a round coffee table is your safest bet—literally. There are no sharp corners!

idea 3: don’t forget the side tables

My design pro says her clients always forget them and I’m happy she reminded me. It’s so nice to have an extra spot for my guests and me to place our drinks, magazines, plates, etc. Just remember to coordinate the look of your side tables with your coffee table to create a cohesive design. They can be the exact same color, in the same color family or be similar texturally. It’s up to you.

idea 4: rugs aren’t just for indoors

Rugs will not only spruce up the look of your outdoor space, but they can help designate areas like a dining section and lounge area if you have a larger space. The best outdoor rugs are made from synthetic fibers like polyester that stand up to the elements and are easy to clean. idea 5: become a plant parent

Vivid and well-kept gardens are an easy way to make guests feel at home. I was so excited to learn there are easy, no-fail planter styling tips that instantly make a patio feel like a lush oasis. First, pick out three pots in varying sizes and finishes (but in similar colors!) to add visual interest to the corners of your outdoor area. Then place your tallest plant in the tallest pot and put it in the back of your arrangement. From there, put trailing plants in the middle pot and smaller plants in the smallest pot. Planning to be outdoors at night? Plants with pale blooms or white in the leaves will pick up the moonlight—and appear beautifully illuminated.

idea 6: add comfort with outdoor pillows

Think of your outdoor space as an extra living room, and use comfy pillows as liberally as you would indoors. Just make sure the materials are made to withstand fading from the sun and are waterproof in case it rains. My design pro had so many great pillow styling ideas. They recommended mixing different textures within the same color palette for a modern look and said to never underestimate the power of lumbar pillows. They make even the most comfortable sofas even comfier.
