At-Home Play Ideas: Pretend Play All Day

Summer’s here, which means playtime is ON. To celebrate the season of blissfully unstructured free time, we’ve curated some of our favorite toys and games for pretend play. These types of easy-to-use, open-ended, inclusive toys and crafts allow kids to imagine, create and explore all at their own pace.
Well-built, classic playsets are a great foundation for playtime adventures. There’s just no telling what kids will create. A playset can become a million other things because there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to play with them. This is world building at its most magical.
Pretend play, adulting edition
We love pretend playsets that offer kids mini versions of real-life tools, because they allow children to put their own spin on the world of grown-ups.
And word on the street is that being a grown-up is actually pretty fun. Who knew?!
Bonus: These playsets are very portable, so they're perfect for taking playtime on the road (aka from the bedroom to the living room).
Pretend garden party? Don’t mind if we do.
From growing their own fresh fruits and veggies to serving up favorite treats, kids can create their own harvest table and host their own garden party. Because summer just isn’t summer without a garden party! Plus, dolls, imaginary friends and stuffed animals are often on the guest list, so these soirees tend to be popping.
Painterly playtime
Different from a structured art class, freeform art time is a fantastic way for kids to explore the language of art without any restrictions—color mixing, self expression and experimentation are all part of the fun. And to alleviate any worries about messes, we recommend a smock (an old t-shirt will do the trick, too) and a floor mat.
Adventure Time!
A kids-only fort, a top secret hideaway, a space station of their own—there’s something so special about dedicated play spaces. They offer kids a chance to transport themselves anywhere they wish to go without leaving home. And that is pretty exciting when you think about it.
