What are bed linens?

Bed linens are the different pieces of bedding one uses to "make" a bed. These include fitted sheets, flat sheets, blankets, duvet inserts, duvet covers, comforters, quilts, pillows, pillowcases and decorative pillows. Bed linens are available in a variety of materials and colors, with the most popular being cotton, linen, percale and sateen.

Types of Bedding

Sheets

Sheets are the base layer to your bed. There are two different types of sheets: flat or top sheets and fitted. Fitted sheets are the bottom layer of your bed. They have elastic corners to fit snuggly around mattresses. For extra comfort and protection for your mattress, a mattress pad is recommended underneath the fitted sheet. When sold in a set, sheets include a fitted sheet, flat sheet and pillow cases. When making a bed, flat sheets are typically tucked under the mattress so they do not shift when you are sleeping.

Blankets

To bring warmth and coziness when making a bed, add in blankets added. These are typically added after the top sheet and also tucked into the mattress. Blankets are available in different weights and materials. For warmth in the winter, several blankets may be added to a bed in lieu of a heavy blanket. Fleece, flannel and wool blankets are also a good choice for cold weather, but they do not breathe as well in the warmer summer months. For maximum comfort year round, a cotton blanket is ideal.

Quilts, Comforters and Duvets

The very top layer of the bed is reserved for quilts, comforters and duvets. These types of blankets add warmth and style to the bed. Duvet covers can be used with light or heavy inserts , such as down, for comfort in cool temperatures. Quilts and coverlets are ideal for layering or use in warmer weather, and comforters are better for cold winter temperatures.

Pillows

Finish off your bed with pillows. Bed pillows come in a variety of styles and materials from down and down alternative inserts to euro and standard size. Don't forget the pillow sham. Pillows should be covered in shams or pillowcases to protect them from sweat. Pillowcases can easily be laundered regularly whereas pillows themselves are washed less frequently. Be sure to purchase the right sized pillowcase for your pillows, since king-size or euro pillows are much larger and will not fit in standard cases.

Beyond the pillows you sleep on, decorative pillows can be added to your bed for a pop of color or a cozy feel. Pillows add a bit of luxury to the bedroom and are available in many colors and sizes, including large oversized pillows for layering and small bolster pillows ideal for the front of your pillow arrangement.

Designing the perfect bed is easy when you have the right linens.
